My Sports Bra Is Killing Me . . .

I am a little larger on top at a 32/34 D/DD (depending on the brand) so wearing a sports bra when I run or exercise is a must. The problem is that in order to get any real support, they have to be pretty tight - which can interfere with my exercising. In order to help, I actually use an ace bandage if I am going to run more than a couple of miles. The one thing I can't seem to fix is the shoulder pain, though. The bras always pull painfully down on the tops of my shoulders. I always choose really wide straps knowing that the skinny ones cut in so bad on me, but I am struggling to have good posture when I exercise because the pulling is so bad on every sports bra. I personally haven't seen any kind of adjustable straps on anything that actually provides good support. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I never learned or enjoying trying to learn to run until about 5 years ago. That's when I bought the correct sports bra for me and it changed everything. You might be different and you might be disbelieving, but I found the best ones (for me, as a 34/36 C/D/DD, depending on weight fluctuations) to be a cheap Champion bra from Target.

The problem I'd had was I was trying to wear compression sports bras. Compression bras do exactly that... compress everything, and it makes breathing more difficult. Don't buy compression bras. Just get a supportive sports bra. The Large Champion ones with the wider straps work fine for me. The ones with the strappy straps do cut in a little bit and I can only wear them when I am on the smaller end of my weight fluctuations.

Friends who are more blessed in the chest than I am swear by a) really good (expensive) sports bras and b) layering. Wearing one over another seems to help with the digging problem because the weight is spread over two separate sets of straps.

You're wearing the wrong bras.
I'm a 34DD and a fitness junkie. Took my awhile to make the right investment in good bras, but if you do, you won't need to, wrap the girls or deal with shoulder pain.

These days, I love the high impact bras from the Gap (I've used Enell and New Balance too...Gap is actually my favorite). They're not too expensive, do have adjustable shoulders, and I don't need an extra layer of support underneath.

I have the same problem! what I would suggest is Victorias Secrets sports bras, kinda pricey ... but totally worth it. I am also a 32DD and couldn't seem to find a sports bra that was small enough around my ribs but big enough to cover everything and hold it all in ! Victorias Secret has sports bras that are your actual bra size rather than small medium large etc. Their sports bras range of styles is very large, personally I like the ultimate sports bra because the straps are thick and you can adjust the style of them, I have them uncrossed because that seemed to be the cause of my shoulder pain... of course could be different for you. hope this helps!

I wear two sports bras when I work out, one of the larger ones without cups just to hold it all together and then a smaller one with cups for tight support, the combo seems to work really well.

I should add I am very large busted, 38 F/G

I'm rather large on top, and I have never found a sports bra that does the trick. But, what I have found that works is to use a very good regular support bra (usually with underwires) underneath a snug sports bra. That works great. The hardest part is to have them not too tight I will actually get headaches if my bras are too tight.

I never liked sports bra, instead.. I use a cotton one with underwire (a very lightweight one) and over it a cotton sports bra (with structure) just the cotton ones that lay flat. I found this combo works better. One, the bra underneath holds things together and you are still shapely and not all mashed down, while the plain cotton on top just gives a little more added support..
Prior, I had searched and searched for the perfect sports bra but could not find one.. this way, works really well!!

Please understand that you're not the average size and obviously your body is telling you a sports bra isn't something you can wear with much success.

Find a good support bra and wear a muscle tee or tank top over it. You will hurt yourself if you don't have enough support and it's not likely ANY sports bra will offer that.

Check out Title 9 - they have a big selection of different sports bras for different sizes. They can be pricey, but you'll get an idea of the wide variety out there.

There's a sports bra called the Knock Out by Victoria Secret front-close that has underwire and then it zips in the front to hold things in place (bra-in-bra technology. It's like a bra with a coat lol. I've heard amazing things and I'm sure you can find a knock off brand if you don't want to pay Victoria Secret prices. I have bigger ones too and that thing looked so comfy and was very highly rated for all shapes and sizes.
