My son has a mommy alarm. I leave for work early sometimes and my mom watchs my 4 month old son. When I work late he sleeps for me, but when I have to go in early as soon as I walk out the door 5 minutes later he is wide awake and wont go back to sleep. He has this mommy alarm when I walk out the door, or he's asleep and I lay down with my husband his mommy alarm goes off. Any advice???????

What can I do next?

Put the shirt you wore that day or night in the crib with baby...It sounds gross but wrap him in the shirt or use it as the blanket....it smells like you and it will comfort him...if you have a musical stuffed animal play the music when you are with him and then someone else can play it when you are gone to relax him...babies have no reference of time or place so when he can't see you he doesn't understand you are comming back(that's why peek-a-boo is so fun)...if he's still in the room with you maybe now is the time to move him...good luck!

Hi C.,

Say goodbye to him with a kiss and a touch on the back ... tell him to have a good day while you are at work, that you love him, and will be home for dinner.

Hopefully, he will come to accept that you need to leave for awhile ... and know that you will be back

As for the time with your husband -- does he fuss or just wake up? Maybe daddy needs to give him some reassurance too, they do have to share you <smile>

One of the things that broke up my marriage is that my husband was jealous of the time I spent with our baby...

Warm Regards,
C.

You too? My son's 9, and he still has a "mommy alarm." I hate the "mommy alarm," because it makes me jumpy. Here I thought my MIL (Mother-in-law) caused the "mommy alarm" stuff, because she lives with us and jumps up every time my husband asks for something and does the same thing when she watches our son. I tried to break him of it by telling him how rude it is to call someone over into another room for something, instead of going to the person to ask. My MIL nearly flipped when I said that and thought I didn't love him. I had to explain to her that is how things were done when I was growing up...The parents didn't serve the children, the children served the parents. (My parents were German and from the depression era, so that is how things were done and how children were disciplined.)

Back to the problem. The getting up to tell me what he wants started working really well, because he figured he might as well get what he wants himself and it was too much trouble to get up sometimes. Why it doesn't work now is because we fell back into the same routine with me running when he calls. I have to discipline myself not to do that. I can't wait to see the other suggestions, because the "mommy alarm" really makes babies out of men.

My advice is to read Dr. Weissbluth's book on sleeping. It is excelent. It took a couple of weeks to get out son on an easy sleep schedule but now we lay him down and he sleeps...when we wakes to early we do not get him until his "normal" time which is 6:30am. Good luck!

try going out the back door,

it could be the door opening and closing or the sound of your shoes on the floor.

it could be the kiss on his head

when you have to leave early in the morning just put everything out the night before,

and don't put your shoes on until your walking out the door,
When your mom comes make her take off her shoes,

If she makes coffee in the morning, it could be the smell of that or the tea water boiling,

it could even be the lights.

So pay attention to what is happening to trigger him.

If its noise, play ocean wave sounds in his room,
to block out the noise

pull the shades down, and keep the door closed over to keep out the sound,

and tell your MOM NOT to check on him.

This things MIGHT help, But who knows he might ACTUALLY have a Mommy Alarm LOL

Good luck

As awful as it sounds, let him stay in his crib until is it time to get up! if 7am is the time he gets out of his crib...unless he is sick, keep him in there. tears or not, it'll only take a few times to teach his body rhythms the timing!

also, unless he is an incredibly fussy, colicy baby, keep the noise in the morning as is...don't go out a different door or wear different shoes...keep all as is, and he will learn do adapt!
