We had this exact same problem with my son, and are now in the midst of it with my daughter. For my son, we did the naked thing and he eventually did sit on the potty after seeing it go on the floor, but the poor little guy was terrified. He soon realized it wasn't as scary as he thought, but it did take him quite a while to actually get comfortable with the idea.
Right now my daughter (2.5yo) pees with absolutely no problem, but she WILL NOT poop. No bribes have worked. I'm looking for ideas too!
Good luck. I guess we'll all get to the land of no diapers sooner or later.

If its the adult potty..perhaps this is the problem..he could be afraid to set on it. My son would not set on the adult potty..he said he was afraid to fall in. so...I would suggest getting an infant potty chair..or one of the training seats that go on the adult potty.

You need to get him a child sized potty chair...either one that sits on the floor or a conversion one that goes on the adult stool. He cannot possibly relax enough to have a BM while he is worried about slipping and falling butt first into the toilet!!! Most of all...relax, you don't say how old Caleb is but he WILL learn this skill...it just takes time.

How old is he? Maybe he's just too young. It's very, very common for toddlers.

I was just reading about some great ideas on the Dr. Sears website. He has some great information about potty training. Check it out!

You didn't say how old he is, but if he's a toddler this is perfectly normal, it sometimes lasts until a kid is nearly 4, though usually corrects itself sooner.

Lay off. He'll poop on the potty when he feels comfortable. Until then, you're stressing him and yourself out.

Most children pee on the potty long before pooping. It's frustrating for you but a natural part of learning for him. For some reason, my son was afraid of losing his poop to the potty. *shrugs* he does fine now, though.

Best of luck.

Have you tried naked time? When my son was 35 months old he kept pooping in his pants (and was doing really well with peeing) so I let him run around bottomless. I think he pooped on the floor twice and was very obviously disturbed by this and then started pooping in the potty after that. Good luck!

Ms. Pippy,

My son (almost age 3) was afraid of pooping on the "big" potty, well pooping on any potty for that matter. :) Finally I caught him at the right moment when he couldn't hold it back any longer. I convinced him to sit on the big potty with a potty seat insert and promised he only had to sit there while I read him a book. It was one of his favorites and little flaps to open. Pretty quickly he focused on the book and not on pooping and it just happened naturally. Once he realized it wasn't going to hurt he actually laughed at himself. From then on he continued to use the "big" potty but still had accidents on occasion.

Hang in there, it will happen. My daughter was much harder to train so I truly understand where you're coming from. We tried every bribe, ploy, game, etc that we could think of to make it happen. Now, at 8 years old she hasn't had an accident in years. :) Make sure he has plenty to drink so he stays hydrated...making it much easier to come out.

I am going thru this with my son. At the moment he lost tv privilege for continuing to poop in underwear. I said no more pullups. He finally conquered standing up to pee. I am waiting for that "click moment" that everyone says will happen. My son is 3 1/2 and we have him in preschool 3 days a week just 9-12 and I think he holds bowels in but supposedly he started to pee at school. I got called to come change him because he pooped one day in his pants so I know how you feel. Does your son hold his bowels at all because again my son hasn't gone in 2 days again and then i will have to give him miralax? The 2 times he did poop he did it on a small potty so like others suggested that might help. I guess I would recommend taking things away that he likes. I took away my son's hotwheels and legos and that made him understand a little.

u did not mention your son's age...however speaking from experience, this will pass. right now it may seem like the biggest problem in the world, but trust me MOST toddlers (assuming he's a toddler) start out peeing and will not poop in the potty. they are more attached to the poop as being a part of them (afterall it's a lump that comes from them) the first time my daughter pooped in the potty and saw the poop she was scared to death and wouldn't do it again for a long time. then I thought about it, she had never seen it before so why not be scared? she looked like "did that "thing" come out of me? think about it, when you change their diaper, they are laying down, they don't see anything they just get cleaned up and keep moving...trust me this too shall pass...don't be stressed
