Two weeks ago my two year old son was very sick but only throwing up in the middle of the night every ten minutes non stop for an hour and a half. This went on for a week, and he never vomited during the day. Well I had brought him to the doctors and she said he had a virus. Well two weeks later here we are again to where he is throwing up at night again from 4Am till 6:30 a.m with a fever. I am so tired and I dont know what to do for him and I dont know why he is sick again. Anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses. Since the day after I posted this question my two year old has not been sick since and has been doing great. I guess the flu had to work its course. But if it happens again the doctor is going to look more into it. Again thank you everyone.

My son just got over it...it went on for a week and then I got it for a week. The doctor said to disenfect because it is so contagious we can pass it back and forth to each other over and over... so I have been cleaning everyrhing...toys, crib, etc... good luck, I know it is not fun :( Poor thing. All youcan do is be there and keep him on the brat diet... rice, bananas, applesause and pedialiyte.

Hi J.~ I just wanted to add that our doc advised us not to give fruit juices either when they have a stomach virus. so we use kool aid, flat sierra mist or ginger ale, or pedialite (my kids hate the stuff though) I buy the clear and make koolaid out of it. My kids usually don't drink these sugary things when well, but have to keep them hydrated when sick. Is your child's fever spiking in the middle of the night? Have they advised you on how to administer tylenol and motrin on and off to keep the fever down? If it is the 2 year old that is sick they make tylenol suppositories (not fun but they don't throw them up) Keep calling your doc. I have noticed that when i call about fevers etc... they seem to minimize them as viruses. But i figure if i don't know what to do then i am calling...........even if i end up being a pest to the ped. Good luck, I hope he feels better.

I would take him to a different doctor for a 2nd opinion. I would be wondering why is it only at night? And, is he getting dehydrated? Are they sure it is not some kind of infection? So many questions! Good luck.

J.,
It is so hard when they are sick. You feel so bad but you are so tired. He probably just came in contact with another virus.
Try to rest when he is spring is coming.

Honestly, if it's a virus there is nothing you can do for it. If it was bacterial then he could take antibiotics but they will do nothing for a virus. Try giving him flat ginger-ale in small sips. The whole thing is you have to keep him hydrated. This bug just needs to run it's course. I wish I had more advice but there really is nothing you can do but make him comfortable.

omg, we all had that horrible stomach virus, it spread through my family and friends like wildfire, it is soooo contagious. some worse than others, it is going around so bad. and my husband actually got it, got better, then got it back again over a week later. my 18 month old had it the worst, vomiting then unbelievable diarhea for 4 days. just watch carefully for dehydration, my doc recommended as much pedialyte as i could get into her, and no fruit or dairy. i would keep a close eye, especially watching the fever and for dehydration. and keep in close contact with the doc, dont be afraid to call or go in as often as you need to. good luck, its a bad one! wash your hands constantly, and try to stay away from each other, though that didnt work at all for us.

Hi J.,
My nephew just went through the same thing--2 weeks of "virus". His doctor recommended my brother to take my nephew to the E.R. because a sign of dehydration is the vomiting part of the virus. He was given I.V. for a few hours and he was fine that night. Maybe you can ask your doctor if it might help your son.
Good luck,
Take care, Jen

did you doc tell you about the BRAT diet.

If your son has a stomach virus he may not have any dairy! sounds like he's getting milk before bedtime. NO DAIRY! Very important.

Well, as far as the BRAT diet: B is for bananas, R is for Rice, A is for applesauce and T is for Toast.

Water and Gatorade should be the only thing he drinks.

Also, there is a over-the-counter vitamin (i guess it is) called Probiotic Acidiphilus. It is actually a bacteria but the kind of bacteria your digestive track needs. Just open a capsule and sprinkle half of it in either applesauce or in his gatorade.

He'll be all better in a couple of days but keep the Dairy away from him for like a week to make sure the bad bacteria is definately out!

My son gets these viruses every few months thanks to Daycare. I know these remedies all to well.

Is he having any problem at school, It could be anxiety about something. if it is the 7 year old.
If it is a virus their is nothing you can do, its gotta pass, just make sure the Dr. knows that he is sick again. Give him gatorade, and clear liquid diet, no juice, water, JELLO chicken noodle soup if he gets real hungry. POPCICLES, make sure you keep him hydrated, no milk untill it passes. Toast is good, crackers too.
If it happens again he should go back to the Dr. and you demand test. ultrasounds of the belly. and go from there.
It could be a medical problem,
Is he Constipated, or is he pooping good. If he is not pooping take him to DR. tell the Dr.
Good luck.

J. I don't mean to scare you but, just from personal experience, do you or your children's father have any types of cancer in family. Before my son was diagnosed he threw up everyday for a whole month sometimes as much as 7 times per day. Just to be on the safe side request an xray done. If there is anything to worry about it will show up. His pediatrician thought it could be everything from flu to acid reflux, OTC's didn't help he just kept getting sicker. As i said i'm not trying to scare you, just use every precaution until you find out what it is. It's better to rule out then not know. Hope it helps, A.
