This afternoon it started at about 4pm and everything he has eaten since has come back up. He has no fever and is acting normal. We cant figure out what is going on. He seems like he may have a tickle in his throat, but there is no coughing before he vomits only after. I tried to look in his throat but had no sucess. It is so weird because he never vomits (well not since he turned 1 anyway) I am thinking I will call the Dr in the AM but I am looking for any advice I can get at this point. He did not eat or drink anything different and everything he did eat someone in the house ate as well. Thanks for listening and any advice you may have

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for all of your great advice. I was pretty much thinking that it was a bug and I really do think it was. After he got sick in bed last night he seems now to be fine all though he had 2 bouts of diarrhea. But Now he is fine. Thanks again

There is a stomach virus going around. My guess would be that the doctor will probably just give you tips on how to keep him hydrated. Little sips of liquid helps rather than having them just drink normally. That will help the stomach. Try popsicles too...kids love them and they help with the liquids.

There is a tummy bug going around. The vomiting lasts 12 hours. Then try little sips of ginger ale and toast. We went through the weekend. I didn't beleive the nurse at first, but she called the tiem frame to a "T"

Hello A. R. here yea i would say a trip to the doctor would be in order i happen to be in the medical field and there are a lot of viruses going around so it could be as simple as a stomach bug that has not manifested entirely so usually by the time the vomiting is over so is the bug lots of fluids and some xtra tlc :) ~R.

The same thing happened to my 2 1/2 year old 3 weeks go. It turned out to be the stomach bug that is going around like wildfire. She never had a fever- none of us did. The whole family ended up getting it in some form or another. Brace yourself, if that is what he is experiencing. Where is your daycare?

Could just be a virus. Or if he has a cough he probably has some post nasal drip upsetting his stomach. I would just give him clear liquids for now and then once he is keeping that down give him some plane toast or chicken noodle soup. Anything that would be light on his stomach. That's probably exactly what the dr will tell you to do. Watch for dehydration. If he still wears a diaper less wet diapers or if he is potty trained less trips to the bathroom. If he gets lathargic or no tears. I hope he starts feeling better. Those stomach bugs are no fun.

As a mom and a teacher, I can tell you, there seems to NEVER be a time when there is NOT a stomach big going around. My kids had one at the end of November/beginning of December, then my 19 month old had a bad one over Christmas that lasted 5 days!! She never had a fever during that time, so it is likely a bug that your son has, just without a temp. That is possible for certain. Like the others said, just try to keep him hydrated with Pedilayte, Gatorade, whatever he will keep down. Don't worry so much about what the liquid is, as long as he is keeping something down. When we were dealing with this over Christmas, the dr. reminded me that even if a child keeps liquids down for as short a time as 20 minutes to an hour, they are receiving some benefit, even if after that time they throw up again. We had to take my 19 month old to the ER because she wasn't keeping anything down, but we avoided an IV because she did a good job drinking apple juice while we were there. I think she would have gotten better more quickly if she would have had Pedialyte or Gatorade, but she literally would ONLY have apple juice for days, and while that did help hydrate her, it's not the top choice for kids when they are throwing up. Anyway, take it slow and introduce normal liquids and foods after 24 hours of no vomiting. Go easy on the dairy - I usually wait a good two days before giving my girls milk again. Good luck and let us know how it goes! I know from MUCH experience that those bugs are NO FUN!!

I agree you would need to have a Dr look at him and very soon, since the constant vomiting will be very dehydrating and that is dangerous. Meanwhile perhaps he could hold down some Pedialyte (spelling??) or similar product meant for keeping kids hydrated when sick... you can get these at drugstores I think. Have him checked ASAP, since there is no apparent reason for this constant vomiting.

Just because he doens't have a fever doesn't mean he doesn't have a stomach virus he probably just didn't get a bad case of it push fluids and when he stops vomiting give him a bland diet for a few days. My boys never act sick when they come down with something so you can't always tell if a child is sick based on their behavior.

It's going around! There's not much a doc can do about it unless your child gets dehydrated. We had a gi bug last week (we all got it). DD (2 yo)was very ill for several hours, then acted unwell for a day and slept a lot but was no longer vomiting. Since then she has been absolutely fine except that she has vomited around midnight a few nights (not every night). It is driving me insane.

I called the doc to ask if this was normal for a toddler (this was her first gi illness), she said yes, just keep to a very bland diet. As long as your DS is able to keep liquids down, he should be fine. Usually they say to give a few sips, wait 20 mins and repeat. Definitely no dairy! Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast are usually recommended when the liquids are staying down.

hi,

this is probably a stomach virus. you must keep your kid hydratated. give him only pedialyte and no milk. give him lots of water and toasts. keep all his things and toys separeted from the others because this is very contagious. wash hands everytime, specially when changing diapers. use hand sanitizer always.

good luck,
luli.

youre not the only one! my 3 year old woke at 4 this morning covered. it is the first time he has ever gotten sick. he is now fine. he says he doesnt have a belly ache. im stumped. he didnt eat dinner last night, so i dont know if he was not feeling well then and only got sick one time b/c he didnt have any food in there. im still going to be treating him as if he had a bug. gingerale and saltines. i dont feel like cleaning it up all day! good luck to you!

There doesn't have to be a fever for there to be a "bug" going around. It can be kind of low-grade which is why he's acting okay. It doesn't sound like any kind of food poisoning because he's not constantly throwing up - just after he eats, right?

Not sure what he's eating. Start with the tried & true ginger ale - stir it so it's flat - the ginger is a real stomach-soother. Wait an hour. If it stays down, try some more. Wait an hour. Then start SLOWLY with the "brat" diet - bananas, rice applesauce, toast. You can try a little jelly on the toast. When they don't eat, their sugar level drops and that can cause more throwing up. Just try ONE food, and always wait an hour. Some people try Pedialyte to get the same result as the ginger ale. I would absolutely not give him any dairy or any meat - those things are tougher to digest and can irritate an upset tummy.

If there is no pain in the stomach/abdomen (try gently pressing) and he continues to act fine, then there probably is no emergency.

Sometimes a stomach thing can move south into the intestines, so watch for diarrhea. For that reason, I would not give him fruit for a day. Stay with the bland stuff. No matter what he says he wants, stick with the "brat" stuff!

If it continues for another day, definitely call the doctor.

Good luck.
