My husband has been off work for 5 weeks with a broken ankle. My sons 1st birthday is a couple weeks away and I feel terrible that we have no money to do anything but a cake. Does anyone know of anything free for entertainment...bounce house, ballons, slide, ect. Sometime people own these things and may be willing to let someone borrow..Thanks

What can I do next?

At that age, the party is mainly for the adults...anything will please the kids! One thing that's not free but really inexpensive is bubbles. Little ones love them! Also, if you already have crayons and coloring books or just plain paper you can let the kids do that too. Cake is fine..no need to feed everyone especially if you have the party at at ime outside of regular meal times. I hope this helps...i'm not too creative!

You could go to a park and have his party. He would enjoy the swings, slide, etc. and you can have family and cake at the park!

You could always go to a big park somewhere around where you live, and the kids will love it. The weather is nice enough now to do something outdoors, and the best thing is its free. Good Luck:)

Also potlucks are a GREAT way to celebrate a little ones bday and are great if you do it at home or at a park! Plus its helps you TREMENDOUSLY with saving money and still being able to have a great and memorable party! Plus the weather is GREAT right now so maybe you can even take it one step further and have a "Teddy Bear Picnic" at a local park. Have each adult/family bring a dish to share and have each kid bring there favorite stuffed animal or baby doll and fun it up picnic style. Or at the park you can send out invites saying come have a ball or something and either have each kid bring a ball to share/play with or at walmart they have a large bag of those ball pit balls that you can buy for very little and you can give each child one and then they can take it home as a party favor killing 2 birds with one stone as well as still doing the potluck thing. Check oriental trading online too as you can probably get a whole bunch of bubbles or something for really cheap or find even more ideas on there. :) Have fun! Now I am excited for my daughters next bday lol.

I'm in the same situation as you! My son's bday party is May 12th and I'm a SAHM and my fiance isn't making very much money right now. We're doing a jungle theme and having the party in our backyard. I'm ordering all the plates off Oriental Trading and I bought plain colored napkins, cups and lots of green balloons at Walmart. I asked my aunt and my grandma if we could borrow their patio sets so everyone will have somewhere to sit and then I asked all my family to make something. We're doing finger sandwiches, fruit salad, and possibly hotdogs. I'm making some "hard" lemonade for the adults to enjoy and having punch/soda for the kids. My best friend is making the monkey-shaped cake. You could make your own cake..they're pretty easy. If you make a large sheet cake, you can carve it into a fun shape and then icing it is a breeze (no fancy drawing to do). Something simple would be a beach theme and then have a beach ball cake...make a round cake and ice it in different colored sections, like a beach ball. She's also making a little tiny banana cake just for my son so he can go to town and not ruin the entire cake. I'm not providing alot to do because at this age they're so easily amused anyway. I'm borrowing a good sized blow-up pool for the few kids that will be there and the adults can mix and mingle. Keeping the decorations to a minimum, asking family to contribute food or drinks, and making your own cake will save lots of money and then if no one has anything for you to borrow you might be able to afford something on your own.
