My smallest son who just turned 1 has had diarhea for about 3 months now. He gets these horrible stomach cramps. he crys for an min. of 30 min a night. We have been to the doctor about once a week over the three months we have no idea what is wrong. We have done stool samples ultra sound to check for interssuption(sp?) and all were ok. we have gone to his gastronenterologist (he already is being treated for gerd) and he did a test in the room to check for blood in his stool and it was positive. we are scheduled for a EGD and a colonoscopy in two weeks. My question has any other mom and child gone through this. Either the symptoms or the procedures. What do I expect? I am really kinda scared

What can I do next?

When my daughter was a baby, we had the same problem and found out that she was allergic to milk, which was the cause for the constant diarrhea. She went to soy milk and never had problems. She may have had other allergies, as well, but the soymilk change over helped her so much.

We had the same issue with our son when he turned one - turns out - he is allergic to milk and soy products. It was like an overnight miracle when we took him off of those products and put him on Rice Milk!
Does he have dark circles under his eyes - the kind that would make you think that he isn't getting enough sleep? That too is a sign that it is allergy related. Be sure to have him checked for milk, soy and gluten (wheat) allergies. I have a great "Tummy" doctor that we see at Medical City if you are interested. He diagnosed our son on the first visit, and then the testing just proved him right! Just let me know if you want his info.

i am sorry to hear your son is sick. I know as a mom that must be awful becuase you can't make him well. When I read your post, my heart went out to you. I am wondering if it's something like I have becuause it does happen in kids too. i have Ulcerative Colitis Disease. It all started with Diarreha all the time and blood in my stool. It does not show up in CT scans or blood work. It can only be seen with a colonoscopy. What UC is, is ulcers in the linnign of the colon. There is no cure, only drugs or the removal of the colon. If they catch it early like I am sure they are doing, drugs will help and put your son in remission. I've had it now since Nov. 05. I go in and out of remission. I've had to find foods that trigger and throw me out of remission. if you'd like to learn more about it. contact me adn I'll be happy to talk with you. Or google it. It's in the same family as Chrones disease.

I truly hope what your son has it something thats easily fixable. I'll keep in my prayers.

Take care,
T.

I agree with Kay. The first thing I thought of was food allergies. I have allergies to several veggies and everytime I eat too much I get horrible cramps, bloating, and eventually diarhea. If you have not had him checked for allergies, I would definately do that.

My prayers are with you and your little one.

My daughters Kindergarten teachers little guy had this last year. We became close friends and I got all the great details :) He ended up being defiecient in a good bacteria. Once they put him on the bacteria, everything went back to normal. He was only on it a short period and since then he has been fine. She does give him yogurt everyday to help.

Have you had him checked for Celiac disease? Just another thing to think about.

It looks like you have received some good advise. My son has digestive issues and was born with a digestive disease. I also suffer from a very sensitive digestive system.

It is good to have all the tests to rule out the more serious digestive disorders. When they do the colonoscopy they can also to a biopsy. This is how we learned my son was allergic to dairy protein.

I'm going to talk to my doctor about celiac, they can test for this through a blood test, thought I hear it can be inconclusive.

You can also try an elimination diet and then begin adding back in one food group at a time. You just keep a journal of food and mood/bms and such to see how he reacts. Talk to your dr. I make this sounds easy, but it can take some work.

Also, one person wrote in about raw veggies, and nuts. These contain fiber, but can be very difficult to digest. Also, nuts can be culprits of allergies and are very tough on digestive systems especially with certain disorders. I would suggest not giving these foods to your son for now. Bananas and applesauce (go organic and no to low sugar) are easy to digest fruits and steamed or cooked veggies are also more easily digested than raw.

I hope this helps and I hope your son's issues turn out to be a simple allergy.

C., I went through a similiar experience when my son was barely 7 months old. One day he just started having bouts of crying/screaming for 1 to 5 minutes and I noticed that they were happening more and more frequently. My pedi thought he might have interssuption also. She wanted us to go immediately to Lewisville Medical Center. We were then transported by ambulance to Children's Medical Center and they tested him to see if he had interssuption and he did not. He ended up having gallstones. It is very rare in infants or childrne, but that was what he had. It had something to do with how his red blood cells broke down when he was born. They caused stones. He had to have surgery at 7 months old to have his gallbladder removed. Because he was so tiny, and because of where the stones were, he had to the surgery done the old way and not laproscopic. My son recovered in a week and he has not had any problems since. Did they do a sonogram to check for gallstones? I don't think blook in the stool is a symptom of gallstones, but I am not sure. As I looked back, I remembered by son, crying over in the night and I would pick him up and he would throw up and go right back to sleep. I think that was a sign of the gallstones, but I didn't know at that time. Keep us posted on what happens with your son. Let me know if you have any questions.

C.,
My son hasn't gone through this but I would advise you to watch out with vaccines for right now. I do have friends who have kids whose tummys got very messed up due to vaccines and especially the MMR. There is a terapy out there that is expensive but has helped called Craniosacral therapy. You can read about it www.upledgerinstitute.com . If you are interested you can email me back.

Dear C. - I don't have any related experience, other than my daughter had to have some tests done at a young age that tore me up. So, I know what you and your son must be going through. I just wanted to let you know that I will be praying for you and him. I will pray that he will be completely healed of this ailment and that in the meantime, God will give you a peace that passes all understanding and will comfort your son. As a mom, I know how agonizing it is to have your child sick, much less for them to be suffering without knowing why. You're in my prayers - L.

i give my kids acidophilus which helps build good bacteria in your stomach. They almost never get stomach problems any more. you can get chewables or liquid at any health food store. I highly recommend it all year round to help out when little kids might put things in their mouths and pass along little germs.

I know you have already checked for all of this but food allergies can cause all of the symptoms you have described. I am sure you have had him tested, but just in case I thought I would mention this. It is not just dairy, it can also be wheat or corn.
