Drum roll, please....!

My question is: Do you think prostitution should be legal? Why or why not?
Tell me what you think!
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Yes. I think it should be legal so the underage prostitution stops. It will be MUCH harder to have 14-17 y/o girls prostituting themselves for drugs and pimps if we legalize it and regulate it. Also, it could decrease the amount of STDs floating around b/c the ladies can get tested and treated regularly and safely.

I don't really look at it as a morality issue. There are lots of immoral things that people do that are legal. Plus some find drinking immoral and that's still legal too. I get there are people that protests all sorts of things, but honestly, sex is sex for some and prostitution is the oldest profession and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Legalizing it doesn't mean you have to accept it, like it or use it, it just means that you can be open minded and hope for the best health and safety of all women.

It should be state to state (state's rights) - just like it's done in Nevada (it's really just one county that has brothels). If you don't like prostituition and want to live in a state that has laws against it, then you can move there.

I never understood why it's okay to sleep with as many people as a person wants, but when you exchange $$ with the other person - all of a sudden it's illegal.

Yes I do. I really do not think the non-legality of it is what keeps people from doing it now. I doubt the number of 'johns" will skyrocket if made legal. Even if it is legal, people will view it as sleazy. At least it may become a bit safer when legal for consenting adults and law enforcement can spend their energy on more important things.

Edited to Add, 8 Kids Dad, Making prostitution legal does not mean that it is not cheating if your husband goes to a prostitute. I think that is an apples / oranges argument. I don't want my husband having sex with anyone else whether he pays them for it or gets it for free :-)

Well if you have met some of the trophy wives I have met in my life I would have to say it is legal in some forms. :(

I think it should be legal. Then tax it baby!!! That should fix the deficit, or not. Still it happens, it is going to continue to happen so make it legal. Heck if they do that the price will go up which will drive some men from using it. Slap a luxury tax on it like cigarettes that should fix a few more.

Heck then men will know how we feel when we can't afford a massage!

Legalizing it would allow for some measure of protection for the girls from pimps and johns. It would allow for some measure of protection for the customer against STDs and being robbed.

While I don't necessarily like the idea of anyone paying for sex, it's THEIR choice, not mine.

My main concern isn't the morality of the situation, it's the safety of the people involved. Legalization would mean some measure of regulation within the industry. THAT is a very good thing.

EDIT: In my "perfect world" everything would be legal. Let people make their own choices and deal with natural consequences. Nature will weed out the morons and asshats.

I do believe it should be legalized as well, it would put a lot of women/men to work that are probably needing a job.
As long as it's regulated.
It's the worlds oldest profession, A job that is easy to provide (don't need fancy education for it).
If someone chooses to indulge in that type of thing, they should have the choice and sort it all out with God. We obviously need more tax payers and more services to tax.
Cops and jails waste a lot of time dealing with illegal prostitution.... time and money that could be better spent.

I absolutely believe it should be legalized.
It will make it safe for woman and men in the profession as well as their clients.
If you don't like it don't use it. I loathe cigarettes and will never use one but they are legal and people do smoke them, whether I like it or not. Same thing. If you don't like prostitution then don't use it but you have no right to say someone else can not. Sex is not harmful and endangering, while, as per my example, cigarettes are.
A number of my arguments for it have already been made. Health Care, taxing, safety, freeing up police resources for things that are really a danger and menace to the community.
Prostitution has been around for thousands of years. It has been legal and accepted in the past. It should still be.

Absolutely it should be legal.
If I take 10 guys home and screw them in the same night, I haven't committed a crime. If I take those same 10 guys home and screw them, and each of them gives me money for my time and effort, I have committed a crime. That makes no sense.

Yes, it should be. No one has the right to tell another what they can or can not do with their own body, plus it is so much safer for the girls when we bring it out of the shadows.

Any physical act between two consenting adults should not be illegal. Period. I don't care if you are cheating on your wife, it's not any of my business. You get to answer to your god for that. I don't believe in legislating morality across the board because although there are specific ethical boundaries for many moral dilemmas, laws are meant to serve the common good and create a structured society, avoiding anarchy. Laws are not meant to tell you the difference between right and wrong, they are written to tell you what behavior society will and will not accept. And those behaviors are up to each culture to write. If you start writing our laws based on Bible law, we becomes a theocracy. Our RIGHTS were "endowed by our creator", our LAWS and the structure of our government were created by humans.

I love how the most conservative people, who are hell bent on government staying out of their business/lives are the first ones to want to legislate sex/sex acts/sexual behavior. It's like they have some kind of overactive imagination and they walk around thinking of all the "bad things" their neighbors do in bed and they want to stop thinking about it, so they want to make a law against it. Because that will make the neighbors stop doing those things...or something.

There is no honor amongst thieves.

Yes make it legal and monitor it. Hopefully (I am being so naive) it will receive better oversight than is provided to the financial industry, the banking industry, the food industry, even (hush) the medical industry.

It's going to happen regardless. Might as well stop wasting money trying to stop it, and make money from it, instead.
