Hi our 18 month daughter had a stomach bug couple days ago. She vomited every time she ate. Then the next morning, about 24 hours later, she started eating and stopped vomiting. However, a mild diarrhea got started and lasted for about one day. She got over it in one day, but she still doesn't eat well, refuse pretty much everything except for milk and apple sauce. She poop twice a day, very stinky. Even though she eats little, her stomach is quite large. Love to hear your advice. Thanks a million.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the feedback. She is basically recovered, eats and drinks normally although she seems to have a mild constipation (no poop for 15 hours).

Everything tends to slow down in the gut after this kind of insult. Go very slow.consult the ped by phone if she is still that way tomorrow.

I had a similar virus over the weekend and my stomach was so bloated after everything subsided. I thought maybe my intestines were twisted but I'm fine LOL. Give it 24 hours or at least until the majority of her symptoms go away and it should go back down. Lots of fluids too.

more than likely she doesn't need to eat much for that bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. That type of sickness can cause some bloating. I honestly would stay away from milk till she's totally over everything.

Don't wait too long to have her checked. My son just went through something that I thought was a stomach bug but by the 7th day he still wasn't eating. (he only vomited twice and had diarrhea for two days.) I was worried he was dehydrated so I took him to the family doc. Well, it turns out his appendix had burst and even though he had the surgery, he went septic in the hospital and had to be helicoptered to Johns Hopkins. My son was in the hospital for 10 days and we nearly lost him. It was terrible. He is home now but has not been school since Dec. 10. I don't think your situation is the same since so many others have had something similar but just don't wait too long. I wish I hadn't.

I would give here a few more days. We had a stomach virus go through our house the week before Christmas. I had it first.
Vomitted--over in 8 hours
Diarrhea--lasted a few days before it was close to normal
Hunger-- none for close to 10 days
bloating--lasted over a week

Ive never had a stomach virus like this one before. Usually, when I have had food poisoning or some such, my stomach feels very empty and flat for a day or two immediately afterwards. This time, it NEVER felt empty/flat and always felt bloated.

I would give her another day at least, maybe two, and if there are no positive changes, take her in to the doctor.

Besides the suggestions below try giving her a probiotic. Our doctor suggests Florastor. We split the capsule and mix the contents into whatever she is eating. For our 3 year old it only takes one or two doses. I haven't found it over the counter but you can order from the pharmacy and they can get in a day. It's very, very helpful in getting your digestive flora back to a healthy balance which will speed her recovery.

Cut out the milk for a couple of days. It is very hard to digest. Stick with the BRAT diet until she is back to normal.

my son and daughter, 2 and 3. They also had this. Big tummies but hardly ate a thing. The bug is causing a lot of gas and bloat. It will go away once it works itself out of the system. Like someone else says go easy on milk and dairy. Keep it simple and easy to digest foods for the next few days.
