My Bread Seems to Mold Within a Week - Suggestions?

It seems like everytime I buy bread it molds after a week. Is this normal for SA? Is there anything I can do to keep it a few days longer? It is whole wheat bread and generally seems to be things that I don't use as frequently like buns.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sounds like this is a common problem. Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to start putting it in the freezer. I wasn't sure how the defrosting would work, but I will try it.

I keep bread in the freezer. I basically put EVERYTHING in the freezer when I don't use them right away because I can't keep anything outside. Everything gets bad in two days here. I moved here from California and I used to leave everything outside like I did in California. They don't last long here. So, now everything goes to the freezer. When you use them just take them out and defrost.

I always stick bread in the freezer as soon as I can (you know how that goes). When you want to use a piece, defrost it in the microwave for a few seconds and then it should be good to go, toaster or not. If you do some searching online, you will probably come across the info I am going by. Something about the bread converting, and not staying stable if you just put it in the fridge, and why you should put it in the freezer instead. Hope this helps.

I have had same problem. I think it may be the ingredients some breads contain. After trying different breads, I found that the Sarah Lee brands last longer without getting mold. They are in the same regular bread isle in stores.Another good one id Butterrust brand. I can only find this one at Dollar General.

Hi D.: I purchased bread keepers. You can get them at Walmart(if they have them in stock). It took me awhile to get them. Seems to help on the molding part. But I really dont see a difference in freshness. But it seems like the bread really isnt that fresh to begin with. Thats just my opinion. Of course it will stay mold free in the fridge, but then again theres that freshness issue. If you come up with an idea, let us know. I think we're all in that same boat. Good Luck.

That is pretty much normal for this hot humid climate. If you want to keep bread longer, store it in the fridge.

Yes, hi. When you buy fresh bread that does not have much preservatives, it will mold faster than breads that have alot of preservatives. In either case the weather and humidity also play a part in contributing to moldy bread. I have found if you keep it in the fridge it will last. I usually toast mine anyway or you can put it in the micro for 3 or 4 seconds to bring it to room temperature. H. this helps.

Nope. I used toput it on top of our fridge and after 3 days it got moldy. Then I tried putting in the cabinet, the shelf life seemed to be a week maybe a day more. I tend to shop for the week every friday and just make habbit of tossing out what we do not use. Maybe because of the hummity and sun.

Yup, that happens to me all the time. I freeze all my bread as soon as I buy it if I don't plan on using it immediately. Then if I know I will need it for a certain day I will pull it out in the morning/afternoon and let it defrost. But when in a pinch, a couple seconds in the microwave works perfectly!
