Hi there,
We're living in Brazil for the year and jar babyfoods are a scare resource down here (cost over $1.50 for a little jar). I've been boiling, mashing and pureeing veggies for my 7 month old, but i'm wondering how i can keep the foods fresh? They seem to spoil after just a few days in the fridge. Any ideas? thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all the advice. It seems the majority of you agree that freezing the food in cubes and storing it zip-lock freezer bags is the way to go. And i agree, except down here they don't have zip-lock bags or even "freezer" bags. So, i'll have to improvise. They definately have ice-cube trays, so that's what i'll do. Many of you said I should get stuff online from ebay or other type stores, which just reminded me of how easy things are in the states. Not so, in Brazil....
thanks again,
abraço,
M. & Madeline Quinn

I put homemade baby food into ice cube trays (which can be hard to find these days with icemakers in the freezer)and then freeze them. Then I put them in ziplock bags and label them and keep them in the freezer. Whenever I need food, I just take out a couple of cubes and microwave them.

Good luck!

Hey M.,
I use to make the baby food for my son. I would prepare it then put it in ice cube tray with a pice of wax paper over it. When it froze I would then put the food in freezer bags. They were good for about a month. I hope this helps.

If you have a freezer go ahead and freeze left overs. They will keep much better and will thaw easily, either in some warm/hot water, or just being left in the fridge for the night before. Also get some really good sealed containers. put the baby food in a plastic ziplock type bag, and then put that in a tupperware container that will help keep it fresh, and make sure that your fridge is the correct temp about 34-35 for the fridge part.

I used to make homemade babyfood for my girls because of the nutritional value and cost. It doesn't matter where you live, it is cheaper to make it. Make some, use some, freeze the rest in individual containers...one serving per container. How I used to unthaw it was by boiling water on the stove, remove from heat, and placing the container in the water for about fifteen minutes. I found this method very economical.

Hi! I also pureed my own food for my little one. You have two options- you can either only make enough for a few days. Or you can make a bunch and freeze it. You can buy little freeze safe containers at the safety first website. They have them in feeding sizes, so you just take how how much you need in a day and thaw it out. I personally just got large ice cube trays and froze it that way (in a big freeze safe baggy). Once they were frozen I just put the food cubes int he bag so I could freeze more. Then I used the cubes as feeding sizes, when she ate more, I thawed out more cubes! It worked real well!

Good luck!

Hi,
I don't honestly know about how to keep things fresh in the fridge longer, but I put my homemade baby food in the freezer. I usually put it into ice cube trays and froze it, then popped out the cubes into a ziploc bag and kept them in the freezer. Once my son started to eat more, I just gave him more cubes at each meal. And the good thing is, at 7 months, your daughter should be ready for more table food soon! Good luck!

I made our son's food....make it in ice cube trays and freeze them until your ready to use! I would make a whole bunch a few days a week so you can stock up! It really worked out well.

Good luck!

I know my Great-Aunt does her own canning and it will stay fresh for a long time. Maybe try canning it, I'm sure you willbe able to find someone to rach you, or yu can go on-line and probably find info on it. Or maybe go ahead and put him on table food. but congratulations on your experience I hope you and the family have a wonderful safe time.

Get a couple ice cube trays. When you make the food, poor it into the cube trays. You can freeze it for quite a while, and then when you are ready to feed, you have a perfect little serving. Just defrost it in the microwave.

Hi, How fun to be living in Brazil! I love adventures! I also did fresh baby food for my kids. You can freeze it in cubes and/or can it yourself. I went on ebay and purchased a Food Saver. It vacuum seals all the foods for you. You'd be surprised how much longer food lasts in the fridge and freezer that way. It seemed expensive at the time (even on ebay) but I have MORE than gotten my money's worth out of it. We just moved to South Carolina from Utah and all my food rots so much faster! I use my food saver on everything and my cheese will last in the fridge for almomst a month without going moldy. I love it. Hope that helps,
Y.
