My Best Friend Thinks She Is Having twins...What Should She Look For?

Hi~ My girlfriend in Seattle is 17 weeks pregnant and has gained 37 lbs! Keep in mind she was 115 lbs when she got pregnant. Anyway she and her husband purchased an at home heart Doppler to listen to the baby's heart beat and much to their surprise they heard two separate heartbeats this last weekend! They were on opposite sides of her belly and one was 85-95 beats per minute and the other is 150-160 per minute. She was at the Dr. about 3 weeks ago and listened to the heartbeat. The Dr. did not mention checking for 2 heart beats.

What do you think? Could her Dr. have missed something? There are lots of Twins on both sides of the family. Thanks for your assistance in helping me keep my friend calm! She is going back to the Doctor tomorrow.

What can I do next?

I would have to agree with the other comments. Sounds like one is her heartbeat and the other is the baby. I had twin girls. They did miss it the first time on the heart doppler. But they really don't know there is two in there until an ultrasound. I went in for my first ultrasound really early because i was experiencing a lot of pain which to me wasn't normal since I had carried three kids prior to full term and didn't experience the pain. That's when I found out that I was having twins. Through my whole pregnancy I only gained forty pounds. I had two full term healthy baby girls. Tell her to stay calm and congrats either way.

I would say that the 150-160 /min heart beat is the baby's and the 85-95 /min is her heart beat. This often happens in the hospital when trying to hear fetal heart tones. The infants rate is much faster than adults and 150-160 is normal for an infant.

She should make sure before she gets her hopes up. The other slower heartbeat was probably hers. If it does turn out to be twins- Congrats!

If she is 17 weeks the doc would know by now and have told her...
I hate to tell her that she is just gaining weight and she needs to adjust her eating habits. Wishing the weight gain on twins won't change the real reality in the end. :)

If she heard two heartbeats the low one was hers... a babies usually is never that low!

She should be having the standard 20 weeks ultrasound soon to check all the parts out and she can ask the tech then. I am sure they won't be able to miss a second baby then. But stranger things have happened.
