My Baby Wakes up Crying...

My son just turned one and for the last two weeks has started waking up from his daily nap crying. He'll cry uncontrollably for up to an hour! I try giving him food, drinks, and the only thing that helps is walking him around, but he weighs 25 pounds! I just don't know why he's started this. I know it's a phase, but can anyone tell me if they had an experience with thier children and what they might have found the cause to be?

What can I do next?

I suggest having his doctor check his ears for an ear infection. It is normal for kids who have ear infections to wake up crying and not want to take sippy cups. It hurts them to create suction and lying down causes added pressure & pain. They say the pain comes in waves. And nap time/bed time is always the worst time of day.

My little guy is the same age and has one ear infection on top of another... and this sounds like it to me.

I would say it is either teething or ear infection. One thing I hate is when dr's ask "Does she have a fever?" my children NEVER get fevers and have had ear infections AND teething without a fever so do not let that mislead you into thinking it is not one of those.
My daughter has had 2 episodes where she will start screaming and crying for no reason at all int he middle of the night. I just have to 'shhhshhhhshhh' in her ear and talk very gently to her till she wakes enough to realize where she is.

Good luck

Could he have an ear infection? My son didn't have an ear infection until he was 3 so I didn't know what to look for, but he was miserable and grouchy after he slept (lying down made is worse) and it took a few days before he told me his ear hurt (and you don't have the luxury of your one-year-old just telling you he hurts).

Both my kids got their first year molars right around their birthdays, so he could be teething.

Hope you figure it out soon!

My son started doing that about 13 months with naps and sleeping at night. First we were told it could be night terrors, then we were told he was teething. This continued for about 4-5 months. The only thing that helped was they homeopathic, Hylands, for teething. Not sure if that is the case with your little one. I wish you the best in finding resolution.

My daughter did that too. I would run up to her room and try and rock her to calm her down and it would take awhile but then she would. I asked the doctor about it and said that it might because she is in a pretty deep sleep and wakes up confused. He told me to talk to her and have her open her eyes and look around. Once I could get her to look at me and see that she was safe she would stop. Unfortunately I think that it is just something that they have to grow out of.

Good Luck
