My Baby Dislikes H2o

My 10 month old baby hates water by itself!! I've tried putting a small amount of juice in it and she still won't drink it. I'm afraid that she'll grow into a toddler with bad water drinking habits. Any advice?

What can I do next?

Hello! Our pediatrician told us not to give our daughter water only at this point because it fills up the stomach when she should be eating someething. Your daughter may not want the water because she gets enough liquids from her formula and the water that is part of veggies and fruits. At this time of the year, I would not worry too much about the water, maybe later in the summer if you all have been in the park for a few hours and she would have lost water through perspiration. As long as she is not dehydrated now, she is probably doing just fine : )

My son does not like plain water either! We knew he still needed the h2O to stay hydrated and then a friend introduced us to Propel flavored water which is still good for you but without all the suger! My son loves it and drinks it all the time.

I wouldn't worry too much. Neither of my kids drank water at that age. When it gets nice and hot this summer - I bet she'll start drinking it.

I started putting water in my kid's bottles when they were about that age and they didn't like it either. Sippy cups didn't really work well at that age either. Once they were not breastfeeding or bottle feeding when they turned one they started to drink more water. My son drank cups of water daily, but my daughter doesn't really drink that much. I would not worry too much about it. If your baby doesn't drink much water then she probably is getting enough fluids from formula or breast milk. Check with your doctor if you still concerned once they are weaned from bottles or breastmilk.

Hope that helps!

My son also didn't like water at this age. He pretty much wouldn't start drinking water until he was weaned from breastmilk/formula. At that point was when he started drinking it mainly because I don't think he was thirsty before. I used to put a little bit of juice in his water but my pediatrician told me to not do that anymore. He said that they will come to expect everything they drink to have a flavor/sweetness and then they will refuse to ever drink just water. The Dr. said that they may refuse the plain water at first but they will eventually drink it if they get thirsty if that is all that is offered. He also said that they will not go without long enough to dehydrate so to stand your ground unless you want them to have bad drinking habbits. I am not sure if this will work for every child but it did for mine. He is now 13 months old and all he drinks is plain water.

I have the opposite problem, my 4 year old only likes water and won't drink enough milk or juice. Ask your pediatrician how many ounces of water is required for this age. I used to put 4 0z. of juice with 4 oz. of water in my daughters sippy cup and did that until she was 2. She got the juice and the water she needed.

I have a product for you to try! It's called Stevia Clear liquid flavors. It's an all natural sweetner that comes in a variety of flavors. No sugar, no calories, no carbs...my son LOVES them! He drinks more water now than I ever thought possible. My mom and I drink them a lot too! They come as a concentrate, so you just add a few drops to your water and wow what a difference! My 3-year old will actually ask for "his flavors" frequently.

They are supposed to be available at some grocery stores and health food stores, but so far I have only been able to get the flavored ones via the website. www.buywisdom.com It's a local company too!

Let me know if you need anymore information...I may be able to get you some samples if you'd like...the owner of the company is an old friend.

Good luck!
