I have a 7 month old and she eats rice, oatmeal and barley just fine but whe i tried to introduce fruits and veggies she spits out them out and starts crying. I have even tried blending them in with the rice and oatmeal with the same outcome. Any tricks on how to get her to eat them or do i just wait and keep trying??

Hi H.,
Did you try to use real fruits and veggies and blend them up. My daughter was not crzy about the fruits and veggies in the baby food jars either. I used the MAGIC BULLET blender and she actually enjoyed the real stuff better without out any thing added. It really is trial and error you may need to just keep reintoducing things a little at a time until you find what she likes. Good Luck.

Don't worry just keep on trying and don't mix the vegetables with the cereal for it may cause gas. If she is sitting up and had built up the eye hang coordination and has teeth, give her the real stuff and let her feed it to herself while you spoon feed her the other. In time she will eat it all:)

Hi H.,
At 7 months, your baby is a bit on the young side for solid foods. Starting with too many foods, too soon can set your baby up for food allergies and sensitivities. Go Slow!
Some of the best veggies for baby are some of the easiest to make. Sweet potato and butternut squash. Cook them in the oven for your dinner and take a spoonful or two of the sweet potato or squash and mash it with some breastmilk or formula.
Super easy and very digestible. One of my favorite books on feeding babies is "Keeping Kids Healthy with Chinese Medicine" by Bob Flaws. Chinese medicine is all about food!
Very interesting, check it out!
Hope this helps!
Susan :)

H.,
I wouldn't worry about it too much, my daughter didn't want anything except breast milk until she was almost one. She never ate baby food at all, I wasted a ton of it trying. I ended up getting a manual food grinder and she ate whatever we ate for dinner every night, spices, garlic and all. All kids are different and move at their own pace. My daugter (now three) is still not a big fan of fruits although she loves all veggies and meats.
Gerber makes some little finger foods that look kinda like cheerios that come in different flavors, they are a mix of grains and juices. I think they are called veggie puffs. Once your baby decides she wants to pick things up and put them in her mouth she may be open to these little treats. This was the only baby food item my daughter would eat.
Be patient, don't push...good luck!

Something that really works for me with my 2 kids is preparing a paste for cooking: I put in the blender onions, garlic, peppers, celery, spinach and carrots, a little bit of water (of course you can add what you want) The result, a rich paste called ADOBO. Whatever you prepare, add this Adobo, not only gives your food an extaordinary taste, but your family is ingesting good nutrients and your kids wont't notice the veggies. With fruits, I get natural yougurt and blend it with fruits, my kids love it. In Summer I freeze this preparation and they have an excellent frozen snack. Good Luck

Hi H.,
I also have a 7 month old daughter & a 23 month old son. Just to give you an idea on why I do what I do with my 7 month old I will tell you a bit on my experience with my son, he ate everything and anything I put in front of him and cried when he finished eating. Now my 7 month old on the other hand no matter what I gave her she would not eat it, except the rice cereal, oatmeal etc... She began solids (the cereal at approx. 4 months of age) mostly because we were having & are still having a weight issue with her so we were little desperate to get her to eat the solids, so I broke every rule in the book. Basically we didn't feed her anything 3 -4 times before introducing the next, because we couldn't find anything she would eat. We finally found she would eat mashed bananas but they don't have enough calories so we were back to the drawing board as to what to feed her; so this is what I decided at 6 months of age while her almost 2 yr old brother was having chicken nuggets and broccoli for lunch I decided to give her in whole pieces broccoli and little tiny pieces of chicken... low and behold she ate it. I have not made her another puree since. Apparently, like you and I she has preferences and pureed foods are not one of them. All the foods that she had refused as a puree she now can not get enough of as a chunky piece. I hope this helps if it makes you nervous to try whole pieces, start with something really mushy since she really will be swallowing the foods whole as opposed to chewing first (maybe a banana or a very well cooked apple cut into tiny tiny pieces).
Good luck!

Relax, the best advise I ever received was that children are fad eaters and will eat what they need. My daughter's pediatrican told me that a long time ago. We tend to fret too much about getting children to eat and that causes bad eating habits. I am the mother of two children and have seven grandchildren. The best advise is to follow your instincts and just love your child.

Hi H.,
I am no expert by any means but I just watched a video online about kids that are fussy eaters and the woman said to introduce things to kids 7-8 times before giving up. Maybe this will help.

Have you tried super soft finger food? The excitement of getting to grab and mash and make a mess from a high chair tray may do it. Really soft over-cooked sweet potato, carrots, avacado, banana, really ripe peeled pears cut into tiny chunks. Put some on her tray so she can feed herself during a normal meal time when you are sitting down to eat. It might be a mess, but she just might learn that feeding yourself is fun.

I have read many places that it sometimes takes trying a new food a dozen times before kids will like it, so keep up the faith! She'll eat eventually.

Hi H.,

At under a year old, food is about experimenting. Your baby doesn't need it nutritionally, she gets everything she needs from her breastmilk or formula. So don't worry if there are things that she doesn't eat, you're just introducing different tastes. Something that she doesn't like now, she may love in a couple of months. Babies like things that are familiar, so they may not be very accepting of new tastes and textures at first.

Only introduce one new food at a time. Give it a couple day break and then try again. It may be that just because it is new, she doesn't like it. Fruits are usually easier to start with because they are naturally sweet.
Cut back on the amount of cereal. then with something else available, she will try it because she is hungry.
All you can do is try. One meal at a time.

Keep trying...it could take up to 10 times to get a baby to eat a certain food.

your child is very young and the tart tastes of the fruits
and veggies from the jars sometimes turns them away. Try
making your own, just blend up your leftover veggies
and make your own applesauce, or cooked down fruits and strain them.

Try adding a small amount of fruit/veggies to oatmeal when she is very hungry. Let her get fairly hungry and try it. Then add a bit more each day. She may not be pleased, however, it is important to establish a proper diet at an early age. When my daughters were small, I always gave them vegetables as an afternap snack, then a small cookie. They LEARNED to like vegetables.

Be patient. Keep trying to introduce the fruits and veggies. I found that what they didn't like today may change tomorrow. I am the mother of 6 year old twins and I find this to be true to this day. It takes a little patience but if you are consistent and don't give up they will learn to love their fruits and veggies. I used to and still do make sure to offer both on a regular basis. To this day they both eat a large variety including SPINACH!!! Maybe try either first. I would suggest the veggies first because someone once told me that once they get a taste for sweet they may not want to go back. Good luck!

Try putting the fruits in their real form - like banana can be cut small and she won't choke on it - mash it up a little. Maybe she doesn't like the texture of the baby food.
