My daughter is a beautiful, healthy six year old child. She has frequent flatulence and I am really concerned that this is something out of the ordianry. I have researched it online and it doen't seem that she has any of the symptoms of a serious problem, and she is very active and on a healthy well balanced diet. My concern is obviously, socially, I have explained to her manners and all that jazz, but as we all know sometimes its hard to hold back, she doeesn't even make a sound but it can really knock you out when she does. It is very embarrassing when we are in a store or around other people and she does this. It is very strong... AM I CRAZY??? or does every child do this? She thinks its funny most of the time when were at home and I want to make sure she's not doing it at school or around others that could offend her if they know she's doing it. I know for the most part she is healthy, I just want to know at this age should I really be cracking down on this ( because i have really gotten mad at her in the past) She doesn't seem to get the idea yet that it's very offensive. I'm counting on you ladies... thanks

What can I do next?

My daughter is 6yrs old and happy with farting too. It is the age and stage for it (until about 10yrs old). My daughter pretends to do them! Just to gross me out!
My dad did many terrible stinky farts throughout his life and still does today. He never went to the doctor about it and we just had to try to steer clear. You might want to see a doctor if it's terribly stinky. So maybe its diet or maybe it’s the person.
Good luck!

You should not push her to hold in the gas, that can cause worse damage to her than letting it out.

Occassional flatulance is normal, but being more of a constant thing with terrible smell is not normal. Basically if we were as healthy as we should be our gas and our bowel movements would not stink at all, but most of us are not that healthy. I have to ask does she drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of dairy products. Gas like that, with the smell could be an indicator that she is not digesting milk and dairy and you either need to get her on a lactose free kind or maybe soy. If this isn't the problem I would take her to the doctor because this is an indicator that she is not digesting properly and may need to take a digestive aid like ox bile or just enzymes to help break down the food.

If her diet changes from week to week that can cause very smelly gas. I know that when my husband goes on a no carb diet and then later eats carbs - it's AWFUL!. I did the low cacrb diet too and when I started eating carbs again it was the same thing. Also if I don't eat greens of brocoli for a while and then eat them I have gas too.
I do want to note, that if you take your daughter of dairy product make sure she is getting her calcium else where!!!!
Broccoli, supplement w/ Vit D, or something. It's improtant she get calcium, if she is lactose intolerant!

You've probably already thought of this, but just in case, are you sure she's not becoming lactose intolerant? When I did (at age 20) it developed over a years time. I was extremely gassy and it actually took the silly doctor I was seeing a while to diagnose it. Good luck :)

Ummm... maybe she is mildly lactose intolerant? There is a stool test that your doctor can do. Or, you could just take her off all forms of dairy - cheese, milk, yogurt, real butter - for a few days and see if it subsides.
Just a thought. One of my children is lactose intolerant and gas is one of the symptoms.

Hi,
I also have 2 daughter, 2 years apart.
My question to you is there anyone in her family that does this openly that has given her the idea that this is funny?
Is she a tomboy or prissy? I am sure you have informed her that it is not lady like and she may not get a boyfriend when her other girlfriends have them because of this?
It sounds like it is becoming a habit.
When my daughter's would accidently do this, I used to joke with them that it smelled like something crawled up in you and died! This was funny but it made them think!
Good luck!

Dont worry. If she is not experiencing any other symtoms then she should be fine. The way our gas and bowel movements smell depend on what we eat. I think that vegetables high in fiber, like broccoli can make gas smell bad even though it is healthy for you. Meat can make it that way as well. Does your daughter have bowel movements on a regular basis, because if your backed up you can have smelly gas. My daughter is only 3. She doesnt have smelly gas yet, but her bowel movements can smell like a grown man. Suprisingly vegetables are her favorite food and she will eat anything that is green. So I dont think theres anything wrong with her health its just what she eats. I hope this helps.

I agree with Kera. It's best to loose a friend than to loose an intestine. (This is just a funny saying in spanish. I do understand where you're coming from since I also have a 6 yr old daughter and same thing. I now that she is eating a lot more than she use to and experimenting with new foods. My daughter is NOT lactose intolarance, but dairy really is not the best food for our digestive system, do try enzymes. Most American diets are depleated. My daughter loves yogurt and what I do is I buy the flavor - kind that children love and then I add the REAL - yogurt with Digestive ENZIMES that you can buy at a whole foods store.
