Lately my 4 year old has been drinking water when she gets up. Not everyday but at least 3 times a week in the morning. My mom scared me telling me that is not good, and that something must be wrong. Her pedi said is nothing to worry about, but I just wanted to hear what other moms think. today she drank water twice before going to school, saying her throat was hot.

What can I do next?

I don't understand what is so concerning about her wanting a drink of water in the mornings. I do. Especially when the heat has been running overnight... the air gets dry and so does my throat and nasal passages. A drink of water feels GREAT.

If she were drinking lots and lots of water all day long and constantly thirsty... THEN you would have a valid reason for concern. But wanting a drink upon waking? Nah..

I drink water every morning when I get up. My throat gets dry and I need it. My kids usually do too. Nothing to worry about.

I would say that since you live in a cold climate that your house is probably just dry from the heat. Try getting her a humidifier for her room or the whole house for that matter and see what happens after a few days. (Make sure you get a cold air humidifier though as the warm air ones are a breeding ground for mold.

Good Luck

It is a healthy habit. My daughter, I and my husband always has water right when we wake up. Partly because the house is so dry that we like to wet our mouth and throats and also because it is a healthy way to start the day since we need a certian amount of water daily.

I think she is totally paying attention to what she needs and ALL of us should drink a glass of water before we put our feet on the floor in the morning, it's one of the best things you can do for yourself.
I have to put a piece of foil over my glass otherwise I'll catch my cat drinking mine :)
In the winter especially, your throat will be dry when you wake up, chances are you are running a furnace at night, so that's probably a lot of the reason she is craving that water in the morning. It's a good habit, dont squelch it or worry.

people SHOULD drink water when they wake up. hydration first thing is overlooked and very important.
if her throat is hot and this is unusual for her, then i'd look into it further. but the water itself is no issue.

This seems really strange to me. Her throat was hot, does she have a sore throat, maybe post nasal drip? With the dry air, I've been waking up in the middle of the night needing a glass of water. Drinking lots of water is a very healthy habit.

It's great she is drinking water when she is thirsty. Try making sure she gets enough water when she comes home from school so she is hydrated.

My 3 year old son does the same thing almost every morning and has been for almost a year, especially in the winter months when that house is dry.

She's been asleep all night, it's winter, the air is dry. Of course she's thirsty! Overhydration is really tough to achieve - in fact, most people are dehydrated! Excessive thirst is one symptom of diabetes, which could be what your mom is freaked out about. But this doesn't sound like that at all. You should be glad she is drinking water - much better than juices which are just cups of sugar.

Her throat may be "hot" because she's dry - her body is telling her to drink more. Good! Unless she's got a fever and is working on an infection, she's fine.

It is fine for her to drink water...nothing necessarily wrong.

She may have a sore throat or coming down with something but drinking the water is nothing to worry about. I'm dry when I wake up.

Oh wow! My children want something to drink every day when they wake up. Water or water/juice combo in a sippy. A person's body, just from breathing loses water during the night. Also, water is pulled from your child's system at night to aid in digestion. Eventually, water is reabsorbed in the lower intestine, but then is excreted through the kidneys. Your child could lose water from mild perspiration while she sleeps. And finally, depending on the salt/sugar content of the foods your child is eating before bedtime, those things could pull water out of her body, into the GI tract. A perfect example of this is Apple Juice. It can be really high in sugar content. When ever my son drinks it, he gets a really watery BM. The sugar literally pulls the water out of the body's tissues into the GI tract to help flush out the sugar. Now I only use white grape juice for both my children, and I also cut the juice: 3/4 water, 1/4 juice. This can help them stay dehydrated.

Yes, there is such a thing as too much water, but your child will naturally be inclined to stop drinking before she reaches this point. Over-hydration usually involves forced drinking regimes, such as in the military (you may have heard about that at Fort Benning, on the news, where this happened). But your daughter is probably just rehydrating after a long night of busy growing during her sleep! :D No worries.

It's GOOD that she's drinking water! Don't worry. It's winter and with our heaters on it dries out the air, making our throats dry and scratchy. I always have a glass of water when I wake up, even throughout the night to nurse my babe.

I can't understand what you are asking. You want to know if there's something wrong with your child because she is thirsty and wants a drink of water? Maybe your mom needs some sort of medical attention, because I can't imagine someone would think it is odd or alarming for someone to want a drink of water! I wake up, brush my teeth and have a drink of water, plenty of people do, kids are no different. Your child is thirsty and taking a drink, where is this abnormal?

Hi, even though she may be a snorer, could your home be overheated? When I used to live with parents my dad would raise the heat by morning before we woke up. It could be another reason why she's thirsty for water. Besides water is good to drink, even in the morning, if she's eating her breakfast too. Be well.

Little kids tend to sleep with their mouth open. Children use simple words and sometimes they are deceptive to us and maybe her throat just gets dry.

Does she drink water during the day, or just milk? If she is getting no water at all (even through juice), then of course she is going to be parched. In my unprofessional opinion, I think she is totally fine and is drinking water to quench her thirst. We all know how important water is, so I think this is great. You can always call her pediatrician to set your mind at ease, since most of us on this site are probably not doctors.

Drinking water in the morning is very natural and totally healthy for the body especially when it is filtered water. After a night of sleep our bodies crave water. It is health to drink a glass of water after waking up in the morning. Your daughter knows what her body needs. Mom, you might start doing the same.

This was very common for me when I was young. She is just thirsty. Make sure she is drinking enough fluid during the day also. It is a good indicator of a growth spurt too.
