My 3 Month Old Is ALWAYS Sleeping!

Let me preface this by saying that I don't think there is anything wrong with him, as he is growing and developing just fine.

My 3 month old LOOOVES to sleep. He usually goes to bed around 8, wakes around 1 to eat, sleeps again til 6 and then we get up for the day. Then he wants to sleep again around 8 until about noon, then again around 1 or 2 until 5 or so, and then up for his longest stretch of the day until about 8.

Anyone else have such a sleeper? When he is awake he is so alert, giggly, happy and hungry, but he's kinda boring me ;-)

What can I do next?

my second was that way, it was awesome! It got to where he would sleep all night and wake up around 8am to eat and the sleep till 11am!! Ahhh, those were the days ;) He did that for a long time! At her age he slept soooo much and ate soooo much and was so happy and sweet when he was actually awake. We had a joke for a while every time his eyes opened someone was supposed to grab the camera ;) Now at 18 months he sleeps all night and takes one long nap, but he still has never ever given any problem about going to bed or taking a nap. Some are just great sleepers, you are blessed!!

I was lucky enough to be blessed with a son like that; he would take 3 hour naps and slept through the night relatively quickly (tho not at 3 months). He still just loves to sleep (now he's 12) and will sleep 12 hours if he can. Kinda freaked me out at first - I was fully expecting to get no sleep, have no time to do anything because he would be up and crying all the time, but I got used to it pretty quickly. ;) Enjoy!!

You made me laugh,, My son, years ago, was a great sleeper. Hours on end, and I sat around waiting for him to wake up so I could do stuff with him. I felt a bit like the yappy dog sitting on the windowsill panting waiting for its master to come home! I tried taking him places at nap time so he would learn how to stay awake longer, but he just slept thru it. We took him to a high school basketball game and sat next to the pep band and he fell asleep. He was asleep in his crib when lightening hit the power pole 2 houses away and he slept thru it. (No it isnt deaf), He was just a sleeper. And yep sometimes it was a bit boring, but youve got lots of years for him to be awake and will eventually wish hed go to bed and leave you alone for a while!

He might be going through a growth spurt. Usually spurts are around:
3 weeks, 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 3 month, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, etc.

Enjoy your little sleeper now (even if you are a little bored). Just as soon as you can pin down his schedule, he will change it! :) Take the time now to work on any of those projects that you've put off, you won't have that kind of time as he gets older.

Happy 4th and snuggle that baby!!!

under a year they should be getting 17 to 19 hours of sleep in a day, sounds like you are hitting that perfectly! Too many babies don't sleep enough, so be happy that your baby will have a smart healthy body!

Congrats on good sleep habits!!

I was like that as a baby :) my mom actually asked the pediatrician if something was wrong with me.... There wasn't- I just liked my shut- eye! Even these days i can fall asleep midsentence or in super loud situations if I am exhausted!

My son's schedule at that age was wake, scream as if starving, eat, change diaper, play, sleep. Repeat every 3 hours until about 11 pm - midnight, wake once in the middle of the night due to acute starvation, eat, change, sleep until about 8 am, repeat. ENJOY the sleeping. Because once he is mobile and awake, your life as you know it will be over (better perhaps but never the same).

You don't have to limit your schedule by his sleep pattern. My son would sleep anywhere, anytime period. In the car, stroller, crib, on the floor, on a blanket on the grass, in a noisy restaurant, outside, didn't matter. So we did our regular routine and when he was ready to sleep, he just did it.

That's awesome! Babies before 4 months old should actually be napping after being up 2 hours to get enough sleep. So if he's waking at 6 am and napping at 8am you're doing everything right! They need a lot of sleep at this age. Don't worry, soon he'll be able to stay awake longer and not need as much sleep. You'll have more playtime with him then. :)

My son was the same way & is still a great sleeper. He will be four at the end of the summer & if our schedule allows, he will take three hour naps. My friends have always been envious. Enjoy!

My baby's like that too. She can't stay awake for more than two hours. In the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby" by Marc Weissbluth, he states just that fact. Babies are supposed to sleep a lot, but our schedules usually get in their way and make them poor sleepers. So, good for you for putting your baby's needs first!

Oh my word, enjoy it!! Especially if he is developing fine otherwise, and is super happy when awake. Lucky you!!!!

Sleep is SO good for them, their brains develop in different (more optimally even) when they are sleeping, I think, so sounds like things are going very well.

Enjoy it while you can. All babies are different and if yours is sleeping well, I wouldn't mess with it. When he is wet or hungry, he'll wake up and cry to be changed or fed. Remember, babies require more sleep than the rest of us.
