K., don't be alarmed. My daugher also did this. She still sleeps 10 hrs a night at 14 mo, but she has slowed down on naps! Enjoy this time!
ok, I may be looking a gift horse in the mouth....but my 3 mo old is sleeping 10-14 hours a night, then takes two 2 hour naps during the day. Some people have told me that this is not good, and could lead to health problems? anybody got any advice?

K.,
Let that precious baby sleep. Check on him often to ensure that everything is ok. My son slept all the time at that age. He is two and a half now and still likes to sleep. You can chech with your doctor, but I'm pretty sure they will reassure you that you are doing everything ok and tell you to enjoy it. Your son is still very small (no matter how big he seems to you now). As he grows, he will sleep less and less. Just make sure he is getting enough to eat.
Enjoy that baby!
YES PLEASE MAKE YOUR PEDIATRICIAN GIVE YOU A MONITOR. My daughter was a day short of being 3months old when we lost her to Sudden death syndrome (sids) When they sleep heavy they forget to breathe. Please I don't want anyone to have to endure what my family and I have gone thru. I told my pedi and she would just say relax mom enjoy. My baby would not wake up to me vacuuming or I could even go in and put clothes away. My pedi still didnt seem to think I should worry. Then she was probally the first sympathy card I received when we lost her on April 25th 1993. Lacey Danielle was born on January 26th 1993. I got pregnant again and they sent me home with a monitor and used it faithfully, the alarm will go off if it doesnt detect breathing and another alarm goes off for no detection of a heart beat. PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. Your a smart women for detecting the problem and seeking help. DO NOT TAKE NO FOR A ANSWER. Ps my daughter slept thru noise and slept more than my other two did when they were her age. Babies do sleep alot so take that into consideration and find out thru your pedi how long she should be sleeping. You maynot have anything to worry about if she wakes up for noises. I'm not trying to scare you and I hope I'm just being a worry wart. God bless you and your family amen.
Wow, I am not alone. My 11 month old does the same thing and has always done so. I usually wake her by 9:30am and she is in bed by 8:30pm. She takes at least 2 hours during the day. Like I said, she always has. Have you talked to yoru doc? I have never thought to be concerned.
Honestly, that sounds fine. My doctor said that a newborn should sleep anywhere between 12-15 hours a day up until 4-6 months and then they will start needing less sleep. My DD slept at least 14 hours a day until she was 6 months and even now she sleep 11 hours at night and then a 2 hour nap during the day and she is 2 years old. I searched on babycenter.com and I found this
"Congratulations! By now your nights of getting up every two or three hours are behind you — we hope. By 3 or 4 months, most babies are sleeping 14 or 15 hours a day, 9 or 10 of those hours at night and the rest divided among several daytime naps (that number will drop to two sometime in your baby's first year). You may still be getting up at night for feedings at the beginning of this stage, but by the time your baby is 6 months old, he'll be physically capable of sleeping through the night. Whether he actually will depends on whether he's learning good sleep habits and patterns. "
Let him sleep!!! :-) It's ok at 3 mo. of age to sleep alot. As long as he wakes up to eat. Enjoy!!
Don't worry! If their tired let them sleep. I have 3 kids and all of them love their sleep even my 4 year old sleeps on average of 13 hours a day. We put them to bed at 8 and they don't wake up till at least 8 and then they take an afternoon nap. I have a 10 month old who usually doesn't wake up for the day till almost 10 but instead of taking 2 naps during the day she only takes on short afternoon snooze. She does sleep more if her teeth are bothering her. I feel that if she is growing and eating good she just might need more sleep then other kids. I think it all depends on the individual child.
If he's very active during the day that may be why he sleeps so much through the night. If he's not, then you should probably ask your pediatrician about it.
My little girl sleeps alot too and has since she was about that age. She will go to sleep between 8-9 p.m. and wakes up between 9-10 a.m. then takes a 2 hour nap in the day. If your little boy is happy let him sleep and just check on him often.
Hello K.,
My first question would be, have you spoken with your pediatrician about this? If so, what does he (or she) say? I am the proud mama of 3 boys (ages7,10,13) and all 3 had very different sleeping patterns. My 10 year old was more like your son. He would sleep all the time, he was a very content baby. He was content to not be bothered (at all.) I can tell you the flip side of this though, is that by the time all of my children reached 2 years old, they would not nap at all and only slept 6 hours a night. I could not even force them to take a nap.
My point in this is, consult your pediatrician and if there is nothing medically wrong...Let the little guy sleep. And hear my advice...Take advantage while you can. Get some sleep mommy. (during the day read a book or actually take a bubble bath instead of that quick 30 second shower.)
You'll thank me later :)

Both of my kids can easily sleep 13 hours. They only sleep 12 during the week though because we have to get up. On the weekends, it's not uncommon for my 2 year old to sleep 13-14 hours at night, and my 6 month old to sleep 13 hours at night.
Hi K.,
I will say to check with your doctor if that will make you feel better, BUT our little girl slept that much by the time she was 4-6mths old!!! She would go to sleep at 7-8pm and stay asleep until 8am!! THEN, around 10am was her morning nap and then she took another one at 3pm!!! And usually for about 1.5-2hrs at a time!! I have a VERY heathly little 2yr old and she STILL sleeps really well and takes 1nap now, for about 2-3 hrs!!! So I say YEAH, be thankful!!!

Hi!
I have a 5 1/2 month old daughter and she started sleeping 10 or more hours through the night at 2 months. I was worried about the same things you are. Then I read an article in American Baby or verybestbaby.com (I'm not sure which) that listed a chart. It said that 3 mo. old children sleep an average of 11 hours at night and 5 hours during the day. 6 mo. old children sleep an average of 12 hours at night and 3 1/2 hours during the day. The put my heart at ease. My daughter Morgan is happy and active and is learning great! I have every faith that your son is just as he should be.
My son has always been a sleeper, ever since he popped out. =) He really started sleeping thru the night when he was 2 months old. Now he's 4 months and still loves to sleep, usually 10 hours each night. He sometimes takes a 2 hour nap during the day, but usually a couple 1 hour naps. I didn't let it worry me as long as I was sure that he was getting enough ounces of formula each day. When he was younger, I did wake him up a little early in the morning to fit in an extra feeding because he was still so young. I don't think it's a problem as long as your baby is getting enough to eat during the day.
I am a mother of two kids Trey(4years) & Aubree (2years). From the first day I brought my son home from the hospital he slept through the night. Boy was I freaked out that first night, I had never heard of a baby sleeping through the night as a newborn, I even called my mother at 3 a.m. to ask her if I should wake him up to feed him, etc... Needless to say that was the one time I followed her advice, there's nothing wrong with them sleeping through the night, enjoy it, if they need something, he'll wake up and let you know. I did that with my son, there is nothing wrong with him and he's turned out to be one of the smartest kids in his pre-school even though he's the youngest. I'm glad I listened to my mom that one time because my daughter is two and still doesn't sleep through the night! I've never heard of any health problems related to a baby that young sleeping through the night, but if your worried talk to you pedi, if your not worried and it's just other people's advice causing you to worry, just don't listen to them and enjoy your full night of sleep, because you might not get it with another baby if you have one! Hope it helps!
I have a 7 month old daughter and it sounds like she sleeps about the same as your son. We were just at her pediatrician and I asked this very question. Her response to me was, "Now that is a baby I want to take home." She said that is fine some babys are just great sleepers and to consider our selves one of the lucky few. So cherish this because I guess you and I are apart of a small few who's children are natural born sleepers. Take care e-mail me if you have any more questions.
K.,
Be happy your 3 mo old is sleeping so good. My son was just the same at about 2 1/2 mo he started sleeping through the night. He would sleep from 9 to 9, get up and eat. Then he takes up to 3-4 naps during the day, usually 30-45 mins each. And his sleeping routine hasn't changed, he is now 9 mo old and still sleeps like this. (At least when his teeth aren't bothering him.) He is healthy as can be. A whopping 25 lbs. now!
I wouldn't worry, my daughter did the same thing, he'll probably skip the napping and sleep all night then stay awake all day, we all have our own sleep clocks, my girl needs 10 a night, myself(8), i think he is just establishing his own clock, as long as he isn't always groggy during his awake hours i would accept this as a gift from god!
I suggest you ask your child's doctor and enjoy it!! Lol! What other moms wouldn't give to be in your shoes!!
God bless,
Chris
I think it's fine...they sleep better if they are well rested. My dd would sleep from 10pm until 7am (so 9 hours) take a bottle and go back to sleep until 10 (another 1.5 hours) stay up until 1, take a nap until 230 (another 1.5 hours) then take a nap at about 430 until 6 (another 1.5) for a total of 13.5 hours...sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more. at about 7 months we switched to going to bed about 9 and sleeping until about 9 then taking one morning cat nap at about 1130 then a real long nap about 230 in the afternoon....to each their own.
If your child is awake and alert other times then the sleep is good...if listless and tired in between...then i'd have him checked out.
My son did the same thing. He would sleep all night and take several 1-2 hour naps a day. I felt very blessed but also worried about it. I have a wonderful pedatrician that told me as long as he eats well, is as active as he should be, and is growing at the rate he should I should just count by blessings. He is 18 months now and is perfectly healthy. He had cut down to just 1 nap during the day but still sleeps all night.
THAT IS ALOT OF SLEEPING, I THINK I WOULD TAKE HIM TO THE DR.
AND HAVE HIM CHECKED OUT, JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE!!
MY 2 CHILDREN NEVER SLEPT THAT MUCH.
MY 2 WOULD SLEEP MAYBE 9 HRS. THE MOST DURING THE NIGHT &
THEN WOULD TAKE A MORNING/AFTERNOON NAP, MAYBE 1 HR. IN THE MORNING AND 1 HR. IN THE AFTERNOON! POSSIBLY HE COULD USE
SOME MORE NUTRIENTS, LIKE SOME BABY CEREAL OR SOMETHING.
GOOD LUCK ! ~
As long as he is growwing and getting the nutrients he needs, I would say lucky you! Enjoy your sleep! My son at 3 mth old didn't sleep 14 hour in one shot, but it was not uncommon for him to sleep 10. Now he is 16 mths old, and sleeps from 6 pm to about 7 am and he takes a 2 hour nap midday. Some kids just need more sleep. I'd say the people who give you grief are just jealous.
