My 2 Year Old Constantly Gets the "Urge" to Poop, but Can't.

It seems as though my 2 year old always has to poop, but for some reason can't go. About 5-10 times a day, he gets jumpy, and does what I like to call the potty dance, turns red and starts sweating, saying "mommy, potty!" so, ill take him, and he'll sit on the toilet for 5 minuets, before he will jump down and go on with his business...No poop? This would go on for about 4-5 days before he will have a big poop, this usually results in crying and a bloody behind.

So I pretty much wanted to know why does he get these urges, but wont go? Is he constipated? Should I give him something like laxatives? I can't stand to see him in pain or struggling when its time for him to poop.

Thanks ladies!

Please go and talk to a pediatrician about this right away! You make it sound like it is an ongoing thing. Ongoing constipation can lead to other complications and you should get some professional advice.

HI E.,

This is serious constipation. Everybody should "go" about an hour after EVERY meal. That is the only way to have a healthy digestive system and an unhealthy digestive system can lead to, not just problems, but diseases. Laxatives are okay as a last resort but the best way to get him to "go" is a high fiber diet (google high fiber foods for a good list) and exercise. Most kids that age get plenty of activity but I say it just to insure that you understand he has to be active.

Prune juice will clean him out and is perfectly safe for any age. One glass, one time, will not be enough if he has had difficulty for a long time. Most kids like it because it is so sweet. If he likes it, 4 oz a day should be enough to move things along. It may be a "blow out" for a while until things get moving regularly but they will....

God bless,

M.

You are describing severe, ongoing constipation. Please get some guidance from your pediatrician on what to use for this, before your little guy develops an even more difficult condition called encopresis.

Maybe he's confusing a "fart" with the urge to poop.

Any pressure in the poop shoot may feel like the "urge". He may be to young to know the difference.

But the warning is very much appreciated....perhaps he can stop by and teach my two year old the same??? Just asking.

Try 1/2 - 1 PB8 each night - it's a great probiotic that will regulate the bowels without the harshness of a laxative or fiber.

Hi E. - Please call me to get him on the Juice Plus soft chews. I have a lot of customers who I would be willing to get on the phone with you to share how their kids struggled like your son, and after they start taking the Juice Plus fruit and vegetables chews it solved that problem completely. They are delicious and not only will they help with his constipation but also give him the whole food nutrition he needs to keep him growing healthy and lower risk of other health issues. Juice Plus is concentrated food, not a supplement. Feel free to contact me directly via Mamasource and I'll provide you more info. It's worth the $22.75 to get him started. One of my customers had her poor son on MiraLAX for way two long (I think about 2 years) and it took less than a month of taking Juice Plus to get him regulated. I wish you the best!

Prunes often do the trick for my kids. If he finds them too tough you might cut them up. I would try that before laxatives.

Also extra fiber cereal may help.

Make sure he drinks lots of water/fluids with all the extra fiber.

Could it be a potty training issue? Would it help to keep him entertained on the potty a while longer, with books or songs? I sit my 2 y.o. on the potty after lunch and after dinner, we goof off, read, or whatever, and it usually works.

I hope things get better for him, poor little guy!

I believe 4-5 days before going poop is too long. These are some things I did when my son was very young:

- Give oatmeal ceral for breakfast.
- In his bottle or sipy cup, give him oatmeal juice, with very little milk and sweeten it with light Karo syrup.
- Make celery peanut butter boats. The celery has fiber, the peanut butter is a good protein. Just watch him closely when he is eating it - they tend to sometimes get too much in their mouth.
- if he likes vanilla ice cream, put some prune baby food over it like a topping.
- Most importantly, make sure he drinks plenty of water.

Wish you the best!

He is constipated. I would seek help, possibly from a naturopath or an herbalist. A "regular" pediatrician will suggest Miralax, or some other laxative. This will work, but I worry about long term use. I gave my daughter Miralax daily for nearly a year before I thought there must be another way. If he really needs to poop and it won't come out, use a children's glycerin suppository. This will make everything a little bit more slippery and easier to pass. You need to help him out with this problem or else he will develop a mental complex about pooping and then he will hold it, resulting in even worse constipation. I'm sorry your little man is having such trouble!

It sounds like he's constipated. Keep track of how many fruits/veggies/fiber he's eating. He may need more fiber through fresh fruits/veggies (much better an healthier than laxatives). Also, he may need to drink more water. If it continues even after increasing fiber and water, contact your pediatrician.

My guess is it is constipation - especially if hes not going for 4-5 days. My little one (now 2 1/2) has been dealing with constipation since she was 6mos old...we have even been seeing a gastro specialist. You might want to look into a pediatric probiotic...we just started our daughter on one (its over the counter) - the first few days are a bit tough while its regulating ( gasiness and mild stomach cramps) but now she is pooping 2-3x a day (sorry if thats too much information) without any issues. We also have our daughter on miralax every day (1/2 cap a day) to help keep her movements soft...and 1/2 tsp of senna syrup (laxative sryup if she doesnt go for two or more days) you might want to chat with your pediatrician and see what they think - but this is what has been working for us. Good Luck!!
