New Onset of Constipation (5 Yr Old)

I need some help for my daughter. We need a quick fix! Before school started, my daughter was a VERY regular pooper! She went one time a day, without any problems for years! Kindergarten started 3 weeks ago, and I have a feeling she is holding it at school and not going there. Either because she is scared to, or thinks she needs to be at home. There were a few light "skid marks" on her panties after school through the week. She went on Monday, and not again until this morning. She was walking funny, and said "I need to go to the doctor". I could tell it was hurting, I offered to help her? (was considering some lube to ease it?? But she was finally able to go on her own and it was enormous! TMI - I know. I'm just wanting to get the point across! lol. Where should I go from here to keep her regular and pain free. Are there alternatives to Ex Lax pills? I've heard you can give a child half of one, but I'd rather not use something so intense on someone so young. If I could get her into an evening routine, she could go at home each night. I have already told her that it is ok to poop at school, just tell the teacher. She just says "ok".

Thanks in advance ladies!

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies. I'm hopeful it's just the away from home adjustment and that by October she will have figured it all out. She got home today from school and pooped 5 minutes after being home. If we can keep that going it will be perfect.

My daughter is that way.........we have found that giving her a "dose" of apple juice everyday is enough to keep her soft/regular. Apple juice doesn't work as well for my son, but extra fiber does. So, depending on the reason she is constipated, you may be able to find a dietary change (easy one) that could help her out without using medications/supplements. I personally don't like giving kids meds unless there is no other option.

My daughter, who is also 5, has a history of being constipated. When she is constipated, I will mix some Miralax in her milk. It is available over the counter. This is safe and is just pure fiber. The doctor told me it's like eating a huge helping of green beans. This has always worked for my daughter in the past and is safe to use. As far as her holding it in school, this is normal. The doctor warned me about that ahead of time. :)

My daughter has been on Miralax since she was 13 months old. (she is now 6) Doctors have ensured me that is safe and will not harm her. I highly recommend it.

I'm having the same problem with my five year old though it started before kindergarten after he had some large painful bm s and became reluctant to go. My doctor diagnosed my son with Encopresis (Google it and see if it fits) he prescribed Miralax its a powder so you can easily half the dose. We will go see a specialist. I cant see him ever going at school but most school nurses will let these children use their bathroom as it is more private so we are going to show him that and invite him to use it. I hate giving him a laxative but want him to get on a better schedule, I give him tons of fiber in his diet. I also tried massage -reasearched online it was under baby massage for constipation-didnt really help him but its easy to try. You should prob talk to your pediatrician, good luck

Talking to her about how important it is she goes when she needs to. My son takes comfort in knowing that if he feels he didn't get himself clean then I will do a good wash when he gets home.
She may be embarssed to tell the teacher such a thing. Maybe letting her know she can tell you as soon as she gets home will work?
Also, we do Mirlax occassionally. Start out with just a little bit and work up until it comes out soft. This was per pedi.

I'd start waking her up a bit earlier and giving her a nice fiber-y breakfast (cereal, fruit etc.) right away. If she'll drink it, some very warm water with lemon before the breakfast will help as well. That should get her able to poop before she leaves for school.

Good luck with this.

Had basically the same experience with my 5 year old this year starting Kindergarten. We had to sit down with her and tell her, "EVERYBODY poops, everybody has stinky farts, nobody knows what you are doing in the bathroom stalls, and if some kids say anything to you tell them SO?! YOU POOP, TOO!" I also told her if some kids are making fun of someone else who pooped that she shouldn't join in cuz it's not nice.
But this is my kid who actually told a bullying boy, "my mom said you just pick on me cuz you like me and you want to kiss me. You wanna kiss me?"
Don't make a big deal of it unless it continues to be a problem. Good luck!! ;)
Maybe try get her used to going in the morning or directly after school. Like potty training all over again, yay!!!

My daughter does the same thing! She is very particular about when And where she will poop. And she is 3 1/2! Anyways, her doctor told us to use 1/2 capful of Miralax in her morning juice. This keeps it from being so hard when she does go. No cramping, no diarrhea. It has worked well for her.

Do not use laxatives.
Our Doctor, says NO.
It is habit forming... thus not good.
And you should not rely on it.
DO NOT GIVE HER EX LAX.

Give her prune juice, pear juice, unfiltered apple juice etc.

Next, the problem is she is not comfortable pooping at school.
Many kids are the same way. And they wait until they come home, to poop.
It will take her time to adjust.

I know... that MANY adults as well... will NOT poop in a public toilet either nor at an office. So, they hold it.

You can speak to her Teacher and say she is getting constipated... so, IF your daughter indicates she has to poop, if the Teacher can just tell her verbally it is "OKAY" to do so. Maybe if the Teacher, tells her its 'okay'... your daughter will feel better about it.

all the best,
Susan

Try Miralax. It's not as harsh.

I know everyone is saying Miralax, which is great, but my picky 3 year old would only take these Pedia-lax melt away strips. They disslove on your tongue, and are grape flavored. Pedia-lax also makes watermelon flavored chewable tablets too. (I found these at Wal-Mart).

I finally broke down and gave her this because she was having the same issues...holding it in too long, then the urge to 'go' goes away...by the time she had the urge again, her B.M.'s were large & rock hard. It was traumatic for her! (And me!) She has been potty training, and will pee all day long in the potty, but has an aversion to going #2 in the potty. I think any change in routine will trigger constipation in kids. If your daughter doesn't like the Miralax, try the flavored pedia-lax. Good luck mama!

it really is normal. if you want to change her routine, it might be easier to get her to go in the morning. Our bodies tend to want to go in the mornings after we start moving around. Maybe if she got up a little earlier. Also, the sooner she eats, she sooner she might go. She doesn't need laxatives. Bran cereal or muffin, apple slices with peel, cereal bars with extra fiber, oatmeal, whatever she likes to eat. And by all means, talk to the teacher so she can keep an eye on things. School's a big adjustment on many levels. Just keep talking to her about how her body needs her help to work right, so she can be part of the solution.

My daughter also has cronic constipation. She is on Miralax which she takes once a day. She has also gone to a GI doctor and we increased her fiber intake.
She was so constipated it was pushing on her bladder which caused her to have some leakage and also get UTI's.
We also taught her to have a pause button (when she would play she didn't want to stop playing to go to the bathroom) we told her that we have a pause button and I told her Mommy's pause button was my belly button and when I need to go potty I push it and stop what I'm doing and go potty. My husband's button was his elbow. My daughter's was her forehead...so, she would start pushing her pause button and go to the restroom. She has been doing very well!!!! :)
The GI doctor also taught her to go potty about 5-10 min. after eating and doing some pushes to see if she needs to go poopy.
I would talk to your Peds. doctor and see if you could start the Miralax and if it doesn't help take her to a GI doctor.
Good luck...I hope this helps!!
