My 14 Month Old Hasn't Said Momma or Dada

Hi Mommies,

My 14 month old is very engaging and loves to babble. He makes all kinds of sounds, but has never said "momma" or "dada" intentionally to us. The only reason I am concerned is the pediatrician asked us at his 12 month visit if he had begun to say those words.
As it's been two months since and there's still no sign of those words, I'm beginning to be concerned.

A few months ago, he very clearly used the words "dog," "no" and "hello" many times, but has since stopped. We've only heard "no" a couple of times and neither of the other two words in over two months.

Is it normal to revert back and stop using words he clearly knew (he would use them very intentionally, like when he saw a dog) for over two months? Also, should I be concerned I have not yet heard him say "Mommy" or "Daddy?"

Thanks, in advance! I can't imagine how the settlers did it when they didn't have a whole bunch of woman around to talk to!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much, Mommas! I knew you guys would give some logical advice and it's comforting to know I don't need to be too concerned yet. I'm glad his 15 month appt. is coming up so I can ask about ECI. I had never heard of ECI until this post.

I would definitely ask your pedi, but some kids just talk later than others. I had my son evaluated by ECI when he was 2 because I thought he was slow to talk, but he actually ranked at a 3 year old level. Give it some time, but if he is still having trouble at 15 months, I would call my pedi and get his hearing checked first and then an ECI evaluation if all is well there. Try to relax though...soon you will dream of the days when you didn't hear - "MOMMA!" at insane decibel levels!
:) Hang in there!

My daughter says mamamamama and dadadadada but has no clue who that refers too and she is 17 months old. Also, she begain saying "hi" and waving at the same time at 8 months. She told anyone who would look her way "hi". She said it until she was around 1 year and have yet to hear it sense. Even if I try to get her to say it she won't. I don't think you have any reason to be concerened.

Mine is almost 16 months and still doesnt say them either. I was worried until I took him to a kindermusik class last week with kids that were 19 months to 2 yrs old. Their speech was not too different than his...a lot of babbling and bye bye's only....nothing clearly understandable. He HAS said mama and dada in the past but it is not consistent. I know that he understands me and he does follow basic commands so I'm not as concerned as I once was. His motor skills are very advanced, hence the reason he is in the older kids music class. I am confident that he will eventually begin to speak clearly. Wait until he is about 20 months(4 mos before his 2nd bday) to really get concerned. You still have plenty of time. They learn QUICK!!

My 15 month old could only say Mama and dada. She just had her checkup and her Ped has recommended ECI to us. She hasnt started the program yet but I hear very good things from them. I would ask your doctor about them on his 15 month check up.

It just so happens that she just started saying words last Sat. She can now say "GO!", "Baba" (bottle/Sippie cup), and "Corn" (Unicorn). I would try Speach Therapy it should help.

Everyone develops differently. My daughter is 14 mo and she only says mama when she's really upset. Other than that she doesn't call us anything. Don't freak out .. time will come.

Mine did the same...he would say words...then they would disappear. I worried a lot because my daughter was very articulate at an early age and my son started much later...and he would also take off the first syllable of words...B. turned to eye bye. You can imagine my concern! Everyone told me he was fine...and they were right! His vocabulary is great, his conversations are hysterical. He chooses the right words for the right situations, and seems to be a happy go lucky little guy! But I may be a little biased!

My son is 20 months and just said "dada" yesterday for the first time, and "mama" about 1 month ago.

He is a HUGE babb;er, and does say, "bye", "look", "ball" and "apple"... so we aren't really concerned.

Many children focus on physical obstacles before language, and the other way around.
