My 13-Yr-old Has Had Hiccups for 5 Days

As bizarre as this sounds my 13-yr-old daughter has had hiccups for 5 days. We have tried every home remedy that we could think of, people have told us or we could find on the internet. We also went to the pharmacy and they gave her these tablets to dissolve under her tongue and that didn't work. I called the Dr. and they don't seem very concerned but said I could bring her in later tonight if they don't stop. Has anybody ever had this happen or heard of it happening to someone? If yes, does anyone have any advice to get rid of them or any reason why this would happen. She's willing to try anything, she is miserable.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thankyou to everyone for the ideas. Her hiccups finally went away but unfortunately have been replaced by a pain in the center top of her stomach that won't go away. She has been to the Dr. twice and the emergency room and they don't know why this is happening so she is now being referred to a specialist so I will keep you updated.

I saw this same thing on an episode of UNexplained medical files, THere was a patient that had hiccups for 2 weeks, they tried everything...home remedies muscle relaxers everything....they finally were able to get them to stop by massaging the nerve on the forhead that control something with hiccups I dont know it was wierd. I thought it was the coolest thing. Good luck Hope you don't have another episode.

have her diaphragm checked. it could be that it's raised or elevated. my father had hiccups that would literally take his breath away and that seemed to be part of the issue. maybe an ultrasound of her diaphragm would answers some questions. good luck and let us know!

Hi L., My son is 8 weeks old, and whenever he has the hiccups, I have him drink something and I hold the little indentation just below and behind his ear (just below and slightly behind the bottom of the earlobe). The combination of holding that spot and him swallowing cures them in a few minutes every time. Hope that hels! Good luck! :-)

My brother-in-law gets the hiccups for days also. He went to the doctor and was given a perscription for a muscle relaxer. He takes it only when the go on for days (couple time a year).

The one cure all I have found is lighting a match and sticking it in water. Gulp down the water and within minutes no more hiccups. Good luck.

hi L.

i know this is going to sound really goofy, but the lady i work with her son used to get really bad hiccups so one day she decided to give him a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich and within a couple mins they were gone. So maybe you could try that.

I would definitely have the ped. check things out. Hiccups deal with airway constriction, so hypothetically, if you can get the airway to stay open, the spasms should stop. I used to do the whole drink water upside down thing, but it quit working. What works for me and my 2 year old -- panting like a dog. Weird I know, but you focus on breathing deeply in and out through your mouth and keeping the airway open and they usually stop for us.
Good luck!

Put a paper towel or paper napkin over a glass of water and have her drink through the paper. It always works for me! Hope she fares well with the doc.

i agree with the match in the water but if that doesnt work they say to use a lemon put some sugar on it.hiccups are caused by The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, but i would try the lemon with sugar if that doesnt work it could be more more serious.you may have tried this already but if not at least give it a try what can it hurt.
