Getting Rid of Hiccups

Hi all,

When you get the hiccups, what is your method of getting rid of them? I had them all day yesterday and today my neck and collar bone area are so sore!! I was so frustrated because my normal method I used wasn't working!! My usual method is drinking large gulps of water upside down all while holding my breath. Then, I keep swallowing while holding my breath till I feel a lump in my throat go down. Sounds weird, but it works, until yesterday:(

For next time this happens, I need more ammo in my arsenal to fire back at the hiccups:)

Thanks!

What can I do next?

A small teaspoon of sugar swallowed dry. No water until the hiccups are gone. Works every single time, as soon as my daughter gets them she asks for the sugar.

This sounds really wierd but fill a glass half full with water and then place a napkin over the top of the glass. Drink the water thru the napkin and the hiccups go away! I do this everytime i get them and it works for me! Good Luck!!

Suck on a lime. Not sure why, maybe the sour shocks your system into the right rhythm again? The spoonful of sugar sounds interesting, I'll have to try that one next time I get them (hopefully not too soon).

I used to get rid of them your way, but then someone told me of a different way: plug your ears (make sure they're completely plugged) and take a big drink. Swallow while your ears are plugged. Works every time, and I don't look as silly bending upside down!!

I usually let out all my breath out and then don't inhale again until I feel like I really have to take a breath. Once I start feeling that way, I count to 20 before I breathe in again. It usually works.

I will also sometimes take seven gulps of water while holding my nose, but that sounds a lot like your method.

One olive (pickeled)... not sure why it works, but it has only ever failed me once! (and my husband and son use it as well).

I lay down on my back and breath very deeply. Breathing in as much as I can and out as much as I can. Usually within about 10 times they are gone. My husband used to laugh at me, till he tried it and it worked. Works everytime.

Take a big breath, and try not to let your shoulders rise - that is, try to take the air into your stomach (yes, I realise it's actually in your lungs), like singers do. Hold it there, and push the air against your diaphragm for as long as you can. This usually does the trick for me.

I put a spoon of sugar under my tounge and let it disolve as much as possible, like a goodies powder, that usually works for me

Spoonfull of sugar. I saw this on Beakmans World and again on Dr Oz and a few other shows. You get the hiccups because the diaphram is thrown off rythm. Swallowing the sugar is difficult and puts the rythym back in sync. So does holding your breath and rinking water. BUt it's quicker and easier with the sugar. Try it. I promise it works. Don't breathe while swallowing the sugar.

We recently learned that if you put water in a glass and then put a knife in it, with the blade side up, and drink with the knife resting against your cheek, it takes your hiccups away. You can use a regular table knife. Or even a plastic one. It has worked every time for all of us, even the youngest in our family, who is 5. I don't know why it works, but it does. And, it is pretty easy to do.

I hate that! Hiccups are the worst. I get them so bad that it makes me nauseous and sick.

I havent found anything that works for me but I have heard that if you take a glass of water and put the eating part of a spoon and hold it to your forehead, while the handle is in the water and drink while doing that, it supposedly takes them away.

The 'upside down drinking' normally works for me.
But if it doesn't, I hold a pen/pencil in my mouth horizontally with my teeth, then drink water.
