My 10 month old has developed and odd habit of liking to stick her finger in her mouth enough to make herself gag. She does it often, sometimes over and over again. The only thing that I can think of is that she likes knowing that she can cause a reaction from me and her body??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I try to ignore it, she still does it once in a while, not as often now. Thank you evryone for your very good advice.

O.,

My mom tells of the story how i craved for attention even as a child. I would make myself throw up so she would come and get me out of the crib. The doc advice back then...was to leave me in it...even though it was hard...she did and I stopped....now I have a two year old...i hope she doesn't have any of my bad habits :)

My 11 month old is doing it now too. He was seen by his Pulmonologist two days ago and she told us that it is perfectly normal and that it will pass. I noticed, that if I give him his pacifier or a teether, he stops. Maybe you can try to keep those little hands occupied or just wait it out until she out grows it.

My then 2 1/2 year old did this when he did not want to sit and eat anymore. My 10 month old began to copy this behavior. They both stopped after a few times because of the mess, and I'm sure they felt uncomfortable. I would say to ignore this behavior, and just clean the mess without giving your baby attention. I would clean my kids up without making a fuss (after the first few times - I learned that my shock was encouraging them) then I placed them right back into their seats to continue the meal. The vomiting stopped soon after I stopped making a fuss.

My kids did it too..for the reaction. It is pretty funny at first ! It will stop if you stop reacting.
Kids are good at being the center of attention !
Make sure she is getting enough attention the rest of the time. ( of course she will want it all the time ! )
I believe that most acting out is the result of children who feel ignored.
Good luck !

O.,
Both of my children did this. With the first it freaked me out, by #2 I just ignored it.
They are exploring their bodies and how it works. they are also learning attention getting behaviors. As hard as it might me...IGNORE IT!
Good Luck!

I went through the exact same thing with my son who is now 9. He just eventually stopped doing it. I think the reaction I gave excited him, so when I stopped reacting, he stopped doing it. Just hang in there, and try to pretend that it doesn't bother you.
