My 1-Yr Old "Not So Good" Behaviors

My 1-year old daughter seems to be developing some "not so good" behaviors lately:
1. blowing rasberries - she started around 10 months old, first I thought was cute, but she's been doing more and now during almost every feeding. I am having difficulties to make her to eat any solid food, especiallly she doesn't take much milk the first place (she weighs only 18 lbs).
2. throwing herself backwards - she does this whenever she gets either very excited or upset at something. She has hit her head several times in the crib, play pen, walls, floor, etc.
3. chewing the crib/playpen railing - I have bought her several teethers, but she seems to be fixated with the railing. Plus she likes to throw everything out from the crib /play pen so usually nothing can remain in there for more than 1 minute.

I am curious to know if any babies out there have these same behaviors? and any advice would truly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for each response from all the wonderful Moms. It was comforting to know my daughter's behaviors are actually considered normal. I don't have too many friends who have kids, and the ones who do said their children didn't display these 3 behaviors. I am taking all your advices and looking into the rail guards and different types of teethers. I hope and pray that my daughter will grow out of these real soon......=)

What we think may be not so good is completely normal!! Babies use their mouth to explore their surroundings and learn about things. She is just starting to realize what she has control over and is testing her limits (and yours too!).
Not much to do about throwing herself backwards, just try to keep her safe as possible. One year olds are often covered with bumps and bruises though.
Have you bought teethers that are a harder surface like a crib? Perhaps try teething tablets or tylenol before putting her down.
Throwing stuff out is a favorite pastime of babies. How many times will Mommy pick that up? Just leave everything on the floor for a little bit-don't pick it up immediately. This is the very beginning of her learning cause and effect. And of course, keep soft toys that areen't dangerous if thrown.
Just follow your gut and you'll be fine.

Sounds normal to me - I am also a first time mom and my daughter is now 17 months. She did all of those things you mentioned plus more. She has grown out of all of those habits - except sometimes arching and throwing herself backward to start a tantrum (which are also normal for this age up to 3!) For chewing on the crib - buy a few rail guards. Hope that helps - It sounds like you are wonderful mom trying to the very best for her little one.

I know you have heard this before, but my 11 month old is starting to do all of this as well. We bought the plastic rails for his crib, he's been chewing it for a few months since he started standing-they dont fit on the crib so it looks horrible (oh well). He just started the throwing his head back stunt-especially when I am trying to put him in the car seat. Always throws stuff off high chair, changing table, car seat.......all normal stuff us first timers have to get used to. I've tried to just tell myself its all a learning process, take a deep breath and learn to deal with it!

Hi C.
My daughter is 13 months...
Head throwing: She seems to like to do this while eating in restaurants, where the high chairs are low and she can actually bend her whole body back. It makes me crazy b/c of course she does it while chewing a big mouthful of food and I am always freaked out she will choke, and embarrassed that other diners are watching, thinking "that baby is going to choke/fall out/get whiplash and how dare that mom be drinking a glass of wine at lunch..." ha ha!
Raspberries: Luckily not a problem for me (so far!)
Biting the crib: Yep, I just don't let her play in there, ever since she bit her lip by accident while doing this.
Throwing out toys: Yep... actually my little one is obsessed with throwing her juice cup off the high chair- sends it flying with an innocent "uh oh" like it was a total accident. Not sure how to break her of this habit, thank goodness for the no-spill sippy tops.
Feeling lost: I know how you feel! She's my first, and between the two grandmas and my two older sisters (2 kids each) and all the books, magazines, websites, coworkers with opinions... how do you ever know who to listen to? All first time moms feel the same I think. I just visited an old friend who has a newborn (her first) and we talked about this very thing. Best thing is to hang with other new moms I think!
Good luck!

I have no advice, but, I too hate the throwing the head/body back thing too. You are not alone. I think eventually they'll put it together that it HURTS after I do that... at least i hope she puts it together.

Thats excellent developmentally that she can blow rasberries. Some babies have sucking, chewing, swallowing issues--and the rasberries indicate she's doing well developmentally and it will help her when she starts talking.

Throwing herself backwards is normal too...so is the chewing. Theres a hard rubber strip you can attach to the top of the crib railing. You should see the way my son's crib looked at that age. It looks like he was a good chewer too! LOL

One way you can find out whether behaviors of 1 year olds are normal is to socialize with other moms who have 1 year old and observe them. You will find that for the most part, this is normal for a 1 year old.

Hi C.,
I thought I was reading a mesage from myself! My 1 year old does the very same things!!!! Just started as well. She is 31 inches and 18 lbs too. No intrest in soilds, throwing her head back. CHEWS EVERYTHING but what she is supoosed too. Rasberries always when she is eating.
Seems this is normal, so I have been telling her no, stop feeding her when she does the rasberries....can't say the behavior has stopped! But she is testing, testing, testing!!! Oh and she doesn't drink much either. I know I wasn't much help, but your baby isn't the only one doing these things!
