10 Mo Old Eating Crib;-)

My 10 month old son just started pulling himself up in his crib and then proceeds to gnaw on it. It has a dark resin finish on it and I'm worried about him ingesting the finish. I hope I'm just being over-protective. Does anyone have any suggestions. Do they make bummerguards for the railings?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I LOVE this website-Thank you for the great mommy ideas;-) I cut up a bumperguard that I wasn't using. We'll try that for awhile.

<Laughing> Mine did that!

Yep, they sell guards. You can also "cheat" and do it at home with a towel or Ace Wrap. Careful what you affix it with though. The Ace Wrap obviously just wraps around it mummy style, but a towel will need to be attached on somehow. My family has always used a towel and tied it on with shoelaces...ends up looking like a papoose! But you have to be willing to sacrifice the shoe laces. You want them knotted soooooooo many times that not curious little fingers can get them untied.

Yes, they make plastic rail guards that go along the top of the rail, just for this purpose :) Babies R Us should have them, or you can probably find them online.

Yes, they do make guards for the edge of the crib. We bought one for my daughter's crib at babies R us. I can't find it on their site, but they sold it in the baby-proofing section of the store.

There isn't a whole lot you can do to prevent him from chewing. Just give him something safe to chew on. When he gets old enough, you can tell him that "we don't bit XYZ. We bite our food."

I would imagine that a rail guard would be made of some sort of plastic, which might be at least as harmful to chew or suck on as the wood finish (which should be "baby safe" – for what that's worth – if the crib was recently manufactured).

It sounds like safety is your big concern; good for you! Probably the safest thing you could do is wrap the railing in strips of undyed cotton, preferably organic, that has been washed in baking soda. Use a needle and thread to stitch all loose ends securely. You wouldn't want to eliminate one problem and create a worse one.

Lynelle,

I wouldn't worry too much about him gnawing on the crib railing; it's better than your fingers right? Both of my kids went through a stage like that, and I still have the teeth marks on the crib from them.

I'm pretty sure they sell the guard you're looking for. I'd try Babies R Us if you have one, or maybe a home improvement store like Lowes or Home Depot.
