Mucus Plug - Summerville,SC

I am 29 weeks pregnant and in the high risk category. I lost one twin in week 15 and have been on semi bed-rest since. Last week I had some lower pelvic pain and lost my mucus plug. I went to the hospital but I was not dialating and my water had not broken. My doctors are used to delivering early babies since they are high risk and they do not seem too concerned since I am past 28 weeks. I am praying to make it to 32 weeks. My question is did anyone else lose their mucus plug that early and if so how long before you went into labor? I would also love to hear from moms who had preemies that are doing good. I could use the encouragement.

Hi R.,

I am a mommy to a 33 weeker. He was 4lbs, 3 oz at birth. He has birth defects NOT related to being a preemie that caused him a long hospital stay. (he has heart defects)If he had not needed his heart surgery, we would have had him home at 3 weeks old. He only spent 5 days in the NICU, then went to the step down unit. He is a happy baby and really taking off developmentally.

Take it easy, get lots of rest, and congratulations!

Hi R., I was also in the high risk category and had my twins at 34 weeks. They stayed in the NICU for almost 2 weeks and are as healthy and happy as can be. I actually felt a sigh of relief that they had a place to go at the hospital that was just for them. The nurses are wonderful and loving to your child, they care for them like they are theirs. My twins were born at 4 lbs and 5 lbs and had no problems when they were born. The dr's said they needed to stay because around weeks 35 and 36 they learn how to suck from a bottle and they needed to stay until they could do that and eat 2 oz at each feeding. My daughter came home first and my son followed a few days later and it was such a nice transition, because the nurses had already had them on a schedule and I just followed through with everything they had already in place. It is amazing what they can do for preemies. Another thing I did, was I had my Pastor lay hands on my belly and pray over the twins. I did this the first time when I found out I was pregnant and then again when I found out it was twins. It was such a calming feeling that came over me, I knew deep in my heart that everything was going to be okay. I will pray for you....

Mucous plugs can regenerate. Unless you're showing other signs of early labor, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a friend who had micropreemies. One was born at 23 weeks and one was born at 25 weeks. Both were just a little over a pound. Both are healthy! One is 6 and one is 2. Hope this brings a little encouragement!
