Moving from San Diego to Green Bay

My husband is in the process of getting transferred to Green Bay, Wisconsin. We currently live in San Diego. We don't have a lot of stuff just moving out tv's couches and other little things. We don't need a big semi because our stuff won't fill it. Any suggestions other than a U-Haul which is really expensive?

What can I do next?

You can get a moving company to put your stuff on pallets and load it on a big truck with other people's loads -- they will drop it off for you at the new place. Might take a couple weeks to get it, but much less hassle. They will give you a price based on the size (ie, volume) of your stuff -- hard to figure unless it's already in storage. Can be affordable if a small load. Also, try shipping boxes of books by USPS media rate. Another tip -- don't pick the absolute cheapest company -- I once got scammed that way. Pick the SECOND cheapest :)

Hi A.,
There are several options if you google it, but there are always the Pods type service, where they drop it off, you fill it up and they will store it or drop it off for you and you call them when you are done.
Depending on your time frames there are also cheaper alternatives, where you would be sharing space, though separated from other people's belongings, that will drive your stuff. This can take longer though. I had to do this to a place in AZ and I don't have all the names of the companies anymore, but you can find a lot of these types of services and it may take a half day or so to make calls and find out pricing, but it may help.
Good luck,
U.

Have you tried a car rental type service where you can just drop off the vehicle at any location? Perhaps they rent vans.

When we moved, we used a company called Upack. You pack their moving truck with your stuff, and they drive it. www.upack.com

Good luck!

Call the big moving companies and see if you can add your things to a 1/2 load going that direction.
