How Much to Move from Dallas to Boston?

Does anyone have a general idea of how much it will cost to move a 4 bedroom, 2000 sq. ft. one story house from Dallas to Boston? We will need a moving company to load and unload the truck, as well as drive. Do they move a vehicle, if so, how much does that cost? Any advice would greatly be appreciated!!!

What can I do next?

I agree with Tracie in that you need to be very careful with the company you pick for a long distance move. They can hold your stuff hostage! If possible, the best solution is to drive the stuff yourself and haul the car.

That said, one option we did on one of our last cross-country moves that worked really well is we "bought space" on a big truck - they drop off a big 18 wheeler trailer and you load everything in it and then together with the company you seal it up by putting in a big wall - then they take the trailer and load it with whatever goods are traveling across country and you arrange for a delivery date. This can dramatically cut your costs, as the process is designed to fill up trucks that have half loads. The downside is the amount of time you are without your stuff - it could be 2 weeks or so. I don't remember what we paid, but I do remember it was around half of a regular moving company. Then you can just hire movers in each city to load and unload.

Good luck!

I would sell as much as possible before you go and buy when you get there, when you know how much room you will have etc. It's a good time to clean out.

Also, REALLY research the moving company. There is so much fraud and you can find some good resources on line.

Allied Vans is good and honest, though even they have complaints. There has been so much on moving van scams over the past few years.

I'm sorry you're moving... Boston is more expensive. But at least you'll be around all that history! That is great fun! I lived in Littleton, MA for years and it was really a great experience living in a 200 year old house.

Hi A.,
I don't know any exact figures since I'm not in the moving business but just to wanted give you an idea of our last relocation. To move us from Orlando to Dallas (about 1200 miles), the bill was around $8700. That included movers coming in and packing the house up in boxes, loading all furniture and our Jeep Cherokee (my husband drove his truck to TX, my daughter and I flew after the house was sold)and then unloading all boxes and furniture into the the new house. We were fortunate that it was paid for by my husband's company but we did see the statements for the expense. That was Nov. 2002 so I'm not sure with fuel being higher these days if prices may be even higher.
