Moving Company Costs - Houston,TX

I don't have any numbers for you but just some advice & that is to READ, READ, READ, the contract. I knew some people that moved out of state & they didn't read the contract. They were quoted $2,500 & when the movers were suppose to be at their new home they got a phone call saying the bill would be $7,500. The explanation was that the moving company puts a clause that if the weight of the items exceed so many tons that they can charge an addtl fee. And the contract stated that until the bill is paid the moving company can hold their belongings. Thankfully they know an attorney & he got this moving company to lower the cost to $5,500 but that was all they would budge it was a legit contract. So be careful.

Mine was crazy hight!! Do not use Ultimite Van Lines. They gave me a quote and ended up charging me almost $3000 more.

We just had some stuff shipped from VA to FL through and Interstate mover. The quote was $700., but when they handed us the bill it was for $1000. Why the difference? They said that we had too many items that were 'lose' or not boxed - a standing lamp, yard shovels/rakes, a wooden table.

Good luck, just remember to read everything carefully and box up as much of your stuff yourself as possible.

We moved from 1 city to a neighboring one (approx. 10 miles). We had enough items to furnish a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment (2 beds, 2 dressers, 3 nightstands, 1 armoir, a computer table, dining room set, loveseat, couch, chair, 3 TV's, entertainment center, coffee table, 2 end tables, BBQ, patio set and what seemed like an endless sea of boxes)! We moved all of our clothing the day prior and let the movers do everything else. We were charged by the hour with a 4 hour minimum. We were to have all boxes packed and marked before they arrived. The cost covered them loading boxes, disassembling large furniture and loading it as well as unload everything and reassemble large pieces at the new place. The hourly charge included their services listed above as well as their moving truck, furniture pads and gas. It was $75/hour and they finished in 4 hours and 15 mins but didn't bother charging us the 1/4 hour (which would have been about another $20).

To echo the others...read the contract and make sure you get a copy of it signed by them too. Anything on the contract that you have a question about and they verbally agree to changing it or waiving it - get them to write it on there and sign next to the written changes. Also, make sure you know when their clock actually starts...some start when they leave their facility and end when they return back there - ours started at our first residence and ended once their job was complete at the other one.
