Mouth Hurts!!!

My poor little girl, 14 months old, seems to be having terrible pain with the emergence of three molars (at least I think they are molars). She has had 8 teeth for a while now and these new ones are really giving her grief. She is a very good natured child and to see her so cranky and sad is just heart-wrenching. I am using over-the-counter infant pain meds as prescribed when she seems her worst. Any ideas to help sooth her sore mouth or know of any natural herbs or anything like that which actually work? I just hate to see a normally cheerful child so unhappy and painful.

What can I do next?

How about Hyland's teething tablets? You can definetly get them at CVS and Walgreens.
Good Luck!
It appears someone else is endorsing them as well- oops.

My son is going through that right now with his eye teeth. He has been waking up in the middle of the night screaming. I know what you are going through. He is a happy baby, just like his older brother. Since this has been happening for the past couple of nights I have been giving him infant Tylenol before bed. When that doesn't help I put a little baby oral gel on his pacifier. That works wonders. I tried putting it on the gums, but once he gets a taste of it, he won't open his mouth for me to put it in the correct spot. I have even tried putting his pacifier in the freezer, then when he cries I give him the cold one. Sometimes that works. Good luck.

hylands teething tablets are great. you can buy them at pathmart, rite aid or walmart. they are most reasonable at walmart followed by pathmark for price. they are homeopathic. they also make teething gel. disney which is also sold at pathmark and target makes nice teething drops and ear drops which are also homeopathic. give her some tylenol when needed also because it could be making her ears hurt with her molars coming in.

Hey Chantel

I really think Motrin (infants of course) works much better and longer for pain than does Tylenol. Orajel helps a bit too. Other than cold things to chew on there isn't too much else you can do. I have heard of, but never used, Hylands teething tablets. My kids teeth LATE so I am going to start my teething supplies kit now and will add the Hylands to it because many people seem to swear by it...

Hope she feels better soon.
BTW- we're animal people too. 2 dogs, 4 cats, 1 fish!

Hullo!!! Hylands Natural(I believe it is called) it is for teething. All natural. I have my 3rd child now ready for her molars, and in addition to tylenol/motrin we use the Hylands. You can use it as the pain arrives, no worry about over medicating with like oragel and tylenol!! It is the best stuff ever. Kinda pricey at 7.00 a tube, but well worth it. We usually purchase it at our local acme. It alkso comes in tablet form, but I've never used that...I beieve you melt the tablets on a spoon inwater or something. ALSO, buy freeze pops, the kind in plastic, and let her have at em...Good Luck!!(in the plastic, closed or open)

The teething tablets are wonderful. They taste good so the kids like them.. and they are natural which makes me happy. I have used them with both of my boys. I would also give motrin (very sparingly) before bed on really tough days to ensure that they were able to get a good night sleep.

Good luck, I know that it is heart breaking to see your baby in pain. My 2 year old was an easy teether until he got those molars...they were difficult.

I think it helped us to feed frozen fruit often. Frozen banana slices, frozen blueberries/strawberries/mango and sometimes my daughter just wants ice cubes. I forget how old she was when I began doing that, but we continue on and off to this day. Sometimes she doesn't want soft bananas, though, regardless of teeth.

Good luck,

Hi Chantal,

This is kind of wierd, cuz I'm not into medicating children, so here's the background: When my now 14 yr old had to have 4 teeth out to have braces, the specialist who extracted them told us that when his daughter had braces, he gave her motrin just before she went to the orthodontist to have her braces tightened. And he kept her on it ofr 2 - 3 days. And his daughter didn't have any pain with braces. We tried it and it worked.

I have never used it for teeth that are coming in, but jaw pain in is jaw pain, it's a matter of the teeth moving.

so, while I wouldn't just give my child motrin, I WOULD call my doctor's office to see what kind of dose they might recommend for under 2, and see if it helps. I also wouldn't go with a generic. If you ask them about "motrin" and they look it up in the PDR (physicians desk reference), I would stick to the higher priced stuff, because that's the one they looked up. They all contain ibuprofin, but the rest of the pill formulation may be different. ??

The best thing I did for my daughter when this happened was to get a clean washcloth and wet it with really cold water and let her chew on it. You might have to hold onto it until it warms a little but the chewing motion will help massage her gums and also sometimes a warm washcloth on the cheek of the affected gum also helps. Good luck.

Hi! It is awful to watch them suffer. One of our best tricks was to use a frozen waffel, like an eggo. It was cold and also fine to eat! I would break it half so it could reach those back teeth.

Hi, I'm not a mom but, i work at a daycare center and we deal with teething alot. I know that teething can be very painful. Try puting a wet washcoth in the freezer until it is frozen and then let your little one chew on it. It will feel good on her gums. I hope this helps. You might also want to try baby origel. Sincerly, Darci Scott :)

Hi Chantel,
I have heard of a natural remedy called Hyland's Teething tablets. I didn't know about them when my son was getting teeth but wish I had, because I hear they are wonderful. With my son, I used to take little baby washcloths, wet them, fold them in quarters, place in a ziplock bag & put in the freezer. he seemed to get relief from chewing on them as needed. Sorry-no other advice--just pray they pop through quickly! Good luck to you.

Hi,

Have you tried Hyland's herbal teething tablets? Most of the major pharmacies sell them - CVS, Rite Aid, etc. If they aren't with the baby items they may be with the herbal or natural items, or with the vitamins. I used them for my now 5 yr old when she was teething and they were the only thing that helped her - the tylenol, advil, ambesol did nothing. Here is a link to Hyland's website if you want more info http://www.hylands.com/products/teething.php#a

Good luck.

Hello Chantel,
Well, I just went through this with my little one too. I couldnt figure out why he was so fussy then it hit me(I am a slow learner I guess!) I would suggest giving the pain medicine when needed and each night I rubbed baby orajel on the gums where the molars are coming through. I think that helps alot and almost immediately and then the pain medicine kicks in when the orajel wears off. Luckily, although it seems like a long time to have your child go through pain its really a short period of time and they are back to their happy selves. I know I didnt tell you anything that you probably didnt already figure out but there isnt much to do and all we can do is make it more comfortable for them and the orajel helped all of my kids!
Good Luck
