Mosquitoes - Atlanta,GA

We just moved in to a new house in a new neighborhood in a new state, and our new yard is incredible, but we haven't been able to enjoy it much because of the mosquitoes. We do have them in Cincinnati - they were not terrible this summer but not great - but a little bit of natural bug-spray and we were set, so we mostly just ignored them. But the kids and I have been averaging about 5 new bites a day since we got here, and there is West Nile down here (plus the natural spray doesn't seem to make any difference at all) so I finally broke down and coated us all with Off - Deep Woods with DEET before we went out to play in the backyard. I never use DEET and I detest the stuff, but I thought until we figured out something else to do, we would suck it up to protect ourselves.

It didn't work, though. My son had already been bitten 8 times and I had been bitten twice (and would get bitten several times more over the course of the day) after only 45 minutes playing on the back lawn. So apparently our new pet mosquitoes think he, at least, is even more delicious with a topping of DEET. Yuck.

I know we can spray the yard for them, but with woods on either side of the yard, I don't know how much it will do (the woods is not our property and so I wouldn't be able to spray there). Plus, we have frogs and such in the yard and I don't want to hurt them (although we do have deer and geese in the area, so ticks might be a concern, too). Anyway, to make a long story short, I was wondering if anyone knows any local tricks to make being outside an acceptable state of being for the remainder of the summer.

What can I do next?

Try planting basil. Raw Vinegar works very well. Take a cottonball and dab it on little faces,or put in a spray bottle, instead of the deet.

Below is a recipe that my girlfriend found very useful. I like the vinegar. Always in the cupboard, not hard to find. Raw Vinegar can be purchased at GNC.

Natural Mosquito Repellent Ingredients
If you are making large amounts of mosquito repellent, a good rule of thumb is to mix the repellent so it's 5-10% essential oil, so mix 1 part essential oil with 10-20 parts carrier oil or alcohol. For a smaller batch use: •10-25 drops (total) of essential oils. 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil or alcohol

The essential oils that work well against mosquitoes are:
•cinnamon oil
•lemon eucalyptus oil
•citronella oil
•castor oil

Safe carrier oils and alcohols include:
•olive oil
•sunflower oil
•any other cooking oil
•witch hazel
•vodka

Natural Mosquito Repellent Recipe
Mix the essential oil with the carrier oil or alcohol. Rub or spray the natural insect repellent onto skin or clothing, using care to avoid the sensitive eye area. You'll need to re-apply the natural product after about an hour or after swimming or exercise. Unused natural insect repellent may be stored in a dark bottle, away from heat or sunlight.

Spray the yard, and make sure you don't have any standing water even outside water dishes should not be left for more than 3 days.
They can reproduce in as little as a tablespoon of water.
Have you tried those Off clip on things with the fan?
You HAVE to either not go outside or find a way to not get any bites.
West Nile Virus is active here. Haven't had many cases but it is out there.

Hi! First make sure you have no standing water. If there is any around make sure you throw a mosquito dunk into it. Look, it doesn't even have to be your land, just toss them in over the fence, they don't hurt anything and will help the whole neighborhood. If there is anything swampy in those woods, treat them, it will change your world. We got a Mosquito Magnet a couple of years ago. I don't think it is a miracle worker but judging by the number of mosquitoes it catches it definitely helps. Were something to happen to it we would replace it. We need all the help we can get- we have a swampy river two doors down and a low swampy yard cross the street. Oh, when we are at my mom's we take a fan outside with us, mosquitoes hate a good wind. We just got and fired up a Mosquito Magnet for there too.
Ticks are a whole other issue... Just make sure everyone gets checked really well every night. I don't even want to say where my husband and kids have had them!

There is stuff online to spray in the yard that is GARLIC based. It claims that it works but I've never tried it. If you have standing water (ponds and such) you can put vinegar in them to a saturation of 15% and it will keep them from replicating.

Put up some Martin Houses. Martins are birds that eat a lot of mosquitos. I would also see about getting some bats for your neighborhood. I don't know how to go about it, maybe call the DNR.

Get rid of any and all standing water. Even check the saucers under plants, low areas in the yard where water can puddle. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.

mosquitos have been terrible here too. I have also started to use off deep woods. I have realized that if I don't COVER ever speck of my body, they will bite me in the place that I missed. Make sure you aren't just doing 1 little spray of it on them. You have to really cover every inch of bare skin. I have been putting it on my kids except for their face and they just get attacked on their face. My son had 5 bites on his face but he didn't have any anywhere else on him. I know deet is bad for you and I hate wearing bug spray, but it's better than getting attacked by them and possibly getting west nile

We are in TX in the midst of numerous cases and I think 19 deaths the last time I heard.

MOST people who get WNV are the elderly and people who have low immune systems.

We back up to a wooded area and live on a wooded lot. We do take precaution to make sure we do not having standing water around. Other than that, we don't do much else. If we are going to be out for a while, we do use the Off Outdoor (green spray can) with DEET and have had no issues.

We don't have any extra worries about WNV or DEET. Keep in mind, a LOT of this is media hype to keep people in fear.

It shouldn't last much longer and you can enjoy your yard.
