i had morning, noon and night sickness, the only thing that worked for me was vanilla perfume. Vanilla settles the stomach and having that where i could smell it helped to settle my stomach. it's worth a try.
I'm on my second pregnancy and did not have any morning sickness with my first one. This one is killing me!!! I've never felt so sick in my life. And as for "morning" sickness...I beg to differ. How about 24/7.
I'm about 7 weeks or so pregnant and have felt nasty the past 2 or 3 weeks. So far...thank GOD...I haven't been throwing up. But man I sure feel like it.
Does anyone have any sure fire tips to beat this??
Thanks so much!!
Thanks to everyone who took the time to offer me some ideas on how to curb the morning sickness! I've tried many of them, but not much relief yet. No harm to keep trying!! Appreciate all the suggestions.

HI, L. - Sorry how you feel, I've been there. Something that helped me was to always keep something in my stomach, I know, that's the last thing you feel like doing is eating, but Ritz crackers work good. Also, believe it or not, I read about this when I was pregnant and it worked for me (I has "morning" sickness all day too) - lemons - cut one in half and suck on it - also the candy Lemonheads help, as well as plain old lemon drops. But real lemons worked for me when it was pretty bad. These tips helped me in all 3 of my pregnancies - about 3-4 months along I started feeling better, so hang in there! From J. L.
I use to keep Canada Dry Ginger Ale in my house at all times. I would drink it warm with only 1 ice cube. This worked majority of the time. The morning sickness finally went away around the last month before having my son! Good luck! I know I don't miss that feeling!
Hi L. ~
I have been giving this advice to every woman I know that is dealing with morning sickness. It worked for me my last two pregnancies and I wish I knew about it when I had my older kids. I read about these bands in a magazine I think, they are called SeaBands and they sell them at drug stores, although they might be a little more expensive, but I found them at Meier's. They are located by the antacids. They are also used on cruise ships for sea sickeness. All it is is a wrist band that has 1/2 a ball inside that rests on a pressure point in your wrist. You must wear both at the same time. I hope these help.
Congrats on your pregnancy--that second one can be a challenge sine the fatigue is already there. I read a tip from What to Expect when Expecting" suggesting that when eating to wait until the end of the meal to drink anything. This helps reduce the air introduced into the stomach. I tried it and it was great-- helping overall with indigestion and general nausea. Good luck with your new baby and the transitions you face.

Hey L. r,on that response on taking that drug zofran do not and i mean do not take it don't take any anti nauseating drugs during your pregnancy only because my aunt took that zofran and the dr never told her that her baby could be born with birth defects and he was.he has a cleft pallot and on his one hand his fingers are very small it's hard to understand him cause of the cleft pallot he talk's through his nose. I would like to talk to you more about this. I have three son's and i did'nt have any morning sickness but when i was pregnant with my 3rd son i got evening sickness at that time we were living with my parents and when my mom cooked dinner i would run to the bathroom and puke and i mean puke. Here is my email address:____@____.com hope to hear from you. Thanks lil
You could try preggie pops or preggie drops. They're made for queasy pregnant moms. They also make a lollipop for kids. They can usually be found at places like Babies R us. You can see more here: http://www.threelollies.com/
Oh sister do I feel for you! Both of my pregnancies I was sick the entire time. I tried everything.. crackers, lemons, you name it! Nothing made much of a dent. Lemons helped on occasion, but for the most part I threw up everything. You might talk to your doctor about Zofran. It was a last ditch effort for me because I was having trouble functioning and was dehydrating quickly. It worked WONDERS!!! My only word of caution is to drink LOTS of water because, although it works well, it can be constipating. BTW it's a lot easier to keep the water down with the meds. I tell ya, if it ain't one end it's the other! :) Best wishes! Hope you feel better soon.

I second the "sea bands" thing...I've read morning sickness is just like motion sickness, which is why the sea bands work. Because of the similarities, you're not supposed to move to feel better. Impossible with a child already in your life!!! Get some help to be able to rest as much as you can. All the other advise from everyone I've heard and tried before, so try everything and anything! Suck on peppermint hard candy, also stop at a maternity store and they have some sort of morning sickness candy which I hear women swear by! Good luck - this too shall pass! Hang in there - you're not alone in this! By the way, I had morning sickness through 14 weeks, so try really hard not to think of how much longer you may have it, just try to get through one day at a time. Congrats on your baby!
Good Morning L.,
You poor dear... I feel for you with having a nasty bout of morning sickness. The best advice I could give you is to visit this website... http://www.helpher.org
It discusses morning sickness and goes even further into a disorder called hyperemis or aka HG. Don't let it scare you..lol In fact, don't worry about that at all if you can eat, drink and function normally you wouldn't have the disorder. (I did and believe me! You would know!)
However, they offer some WONDERFUL solutions for women who are dealing with morning sickness. Take a peek at the site and I hope you get to feeling better soon! Being pregnant should be a happy time. I hope this helps and keep us posted on how things go.
Blessings,
M.
I was soooo sick, so I know how you feel. I was actually throwing up all the time though. I lost about 10 pounds just due to the morning sickness, I don't think I ate anything but apples and a little bit of bread for weeks on end.
I tried all the other stuff the other posters listed, but nothing helped at all.
Interestingly I got food poisoning when I was 7 weeks pregnant (that was awesome!)and was so sick I ended up in the ER. They sent me home with Zofran. It worked so well. My OB said it was totally safe to take, and that that was what they gave women with really bad morning sickness.
They refilled it for me, and the stuff was the only thing that got me through some days.
I did not take it often, but when I absolutely needed it it was great.
Good luck to you, I am so sorry you feel so lousy :)
I am so sorry to hear. That's my fear.. no sickness with 1st time around but sickness with 2nd time around. If it's really bad and you are losing weight, you might want to call your ob/gyn for some help/advice. You've probably already tried these but just in case.... crackers, ginger anything (soda, snaps, candy, tea), mints. Congrats and hang in there!
Hi L.! I have gone through 4 preganancies, and was sick 24/7 for the 1st 4 months with all of them!!! (Either i'm a glutton for punishment, or i just love babies!!! LOL!) Anyways, peppermint did not work for me...i had an aversion to the taste of it when i was pregnant...so much so that is stopped using toothpaste because the taste and smell made me throw up! I did use the Sea-bands, which help to alleviate it, but not eliminate it.
My youngest is now 4 1/2 mo. old, and i found that hot tea helped. I really liked Sleepytime Tea by Celestial Seasonings. It's a blend of chamomile and spearamint...light on the spearamint taste! They also say sucking on hard candies helps. Motherhood Maternity stores sells Preggo Pops, which are suckers that contain ginger in them...a natural nausea reliever. I also found eating those tiny little oyester crackers helped me.
The worst thing to do is get caught up in the vicious cycle of NOT eating...which is easy to do because you are so queasy and nothing sounds good. But, if you neglect to eat, your blood sugar drops, you feel even sicker than before, then you REALLY don't want to eat, and it continues on and on. Even if you have to force down something bland, do it. I had to do that, because i got caught up in the not wanting to eat trap, and it really wreaked havoc on my stomach and blood sugar!
My nausea and vomiting got so bad, that i finally comlained to my doctor and he put me on a prescription anti-naseau drug. I used it very sparingly bacause it made me SO sleepy (as if pregnancy alone does'nt so that enough to ya!), and i had a 3 year old at home to take care of.
There is help, and hope, wether it be a handed down traditional remedy, or a modren day prescription. I do understand how very MISERABLE it is! I cried alot during my 1st trimester because i was so miserable and nasueous...and i am normally not an emotional person...even during pregnanies! :) But, it does get better, usually after the 1st 3-4 mo., and at the end, you'll have a beautiful new baby to be proud of! That is your reward for all of this hard work and suffering! Good luck to you, Mommy! P.S. My morning sickness got more intense with each subsequent pregnancy! Every woman is different though!
Hi there - I don't know if it will help you or not because everyone's different but for all 3 of my pregnancies when I felt sick I ate pretzel rods. It really helped. I tried crackers like everyone told me but the only thing I could get to help was the pretzels but make sure its the pretzel rods.
Good luck
L., you can go buy wrist bands that are called sea band they are used for ocean sickness. I had the same problem and they worked wonders. You can get them at any local drug store or walmart.
I feel for you. I had morning sickness from week 6-12 with my first, and hardly nothing with my second child. I told my husband during my first pregnancy that this was the only child he was getting. It does get better!! I made sure to eat the minute I woke up - whether saltine crackers or a plain waffle (no butter or syrup). I drank a lot of water throughout the day, and sucked on either lemon drops or a lollipop when I felt the nausea. At night I took a hot shower and went to bed very early (like 6-7pm). Ginger Ale is an option, but I got so tired of that taste. I found salty food worked better for me - potato chips, pretzels. I was lucky to eat mac and cheese for dinner, that was my staple and agreed with me. Good luck!!
I haven't read all 33 of you other responses so sorry if someone already mentioned this ... I'm in the same boat as you. You can ask your doctor to put you on PROMETHAZINE (that's the generic version) but your doctor should know the name brand. It's an anti-nausea med. Good Luck and Congrats!!
I SWEAR BY my Sea-Bands (generic bands fine too). They are for motion sickness and boy, did they help me feel better!!! I still use them when I get migraines or feel off-balance from a severe cold. They still work for me.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!
M.
Thanks for posting L. - I am in the same boat - 9 1/2 weeks pregnant with my 2nd - have a 14 mo boy. I am not a happy camper - and I was fine with my son. Just trying to keep my thoughts focused on Christmas (the last day of my 1st tri) and HOPING it gets better!!! I enjoyed reading your responses!!
K.
Talk with your dr., but I took 1/2 a tablet of unisom before bed and it helped a lot.
I was very nauseous with both of my pregnancies. I used Preggie Pops, it is sold in baby specialty stores (I think babies r'us too). It exists in candy-type and also lollipops, very efficient. Look on their website, you can even buy them online. It helped me a lot. Also nibbling on saltines crackers helps.
Hang in there, it will go away after the 3rd-4th month.
SUGAR - Hard candy and good old fashioned Kool Aid helped me in my first trimesters.
Anything with Ginger in it can be helpful. Make sure it has real ginger, not a ginger flavoring.
B vitamins can be helpful as well. There is a prenatal vitamin called Premesis that your doctor or midwife can prescribe with a different balance of nutrients that is easier on the stomach and also added B vitamin. If you are currently taking your prenatal vitamin during the day try taking it at night. Or if you can't stand a prenatal try taking two Flinstones chewables a day- they have everything you need and are not as gross.
Make sure you keep a little food in your belly all the time. There is evidence that staying away from excessive sugar can help. Also, protein intake is important. Make sure to stay hydrated. If you can't stomach water you can try adding flavor or lemon to make it easier to tolerate.
Luckily, most pregnancy related nausea goes away around 12 weeks or so, so you will be feeling better soon.
Ugh this is so miserable isn't it? I wasn't sick at all with my first, and was nauseaus with this current pregnancy for about 4 weeks straight. Here is what has helped me this time around:
1. Keep a little food in your stomach at all times
2. Ginger Chews (you can get them at Trader Joes and Whole Foods) - these are great
3. Peppermint tea - also really helpful
4. I've heard that taking vit. B helps too
5. Make sure you take your prenatal vit. with some food - not on an empty stomach
6. Protein - I ate a lot of eggs and cheese for breakfast and this helped. SOmetimes I broke down and went over to the deli at the grocery store for some fried chicken for lunch (I've NEVER done this until this pregnancy!)
7. Get lots of sleep.
For me, I started feeling better around 10.5 weeks (I'm 12 now) and I'm SO glad. Good luck - and congrats!
I had the same 24/7 morning sickness with my 2nd pregnancy - taking care of a toddler at the same time was impossible!! :)
I had tried all the home remedies to no avail. I didn't gain my first pound until 20 weeks because I couldn't eat for so long. At my 10 week appt. my doctor gave me a prescription of Zofran - it is GREAT! I only took one pill every other day, and it was enough to get me through. My morning sickness finally ended at 17 weeks. I don't know how I would have survived without it!
Zofran is the anti-nausea medicine often given to chemo patients. My doctor said it is very safe, and because you use such a small amount, there is no need to worry about side effects.
Good luck!
Eating small meals helps, and also it helps me to suck on hard candy.
I don't have cravings but food aversions.
Nothing gets rid of it completely. The only good thing is that it passes!
Try sucking on hard candy. I personally liked butterscotch! Supposedly the sugar helps. Whatever it was, it helped me a ton!
I can certainly sympathize with you. Both of my pregnancies were like that except that I really did throw up. I lost weight during both. With my 1st I found what seemed to help me the most was staying cool. For a time, we didn't have central air then, I had to sit in my bedroom to eat my supper because that was the only room with air. It was later discovered that I have a high acidic stomach. I take meds every day to keep the acid under control. If I don't, I get sick and hurt terribly. With my 2nd, I was sick but it felt different. I got really hot and sweaty. Had a hard time getting through a meal. Kind of felt like stomach flu. It was discovered that I had gestational diabetes. I would say, try to limit your amounts of carbs and see if that has an impact. It sure did help me a lot. I don't imagine that they will test you for this until you are about 5 months but limiting carbs a bit won't hurt you or baby if you don't have gest. diab. Good luck to you. I hope this helps some.
Hi L..
I am Anu from Fort Wayne. I can understand your situation .I had 4 months of morning day and night sickness. I even threw up most of the time .Tummy was churned like anything. I started sipping peppermint tea which helped me a lot. Even after the birth of my baby (who is going to be 2 year old on 15th dec )I keep taking peppermint tea. It helps my mind and body to calm down . Hope you will feel better soon.
Love
Anu
I was only able to fight it off w/ TCBY yogurt.
Keep trying things, following your cravings, and you'll find something...
I am 12 weeks along on my 3rd pregnancy and I'm dealing with the same thing. With my first pregnancy, I was throwing up every few hours. With this pregnancy, I started with the nausea for a few weeks then I went through a week of vomiting. I got some Zophran from my doctor to help me keep food down because I've been losing too much weight. It helped with the vomiting but not the nausea. I think the nausea is worse than the vomiting. My doctor just gave me a prescription to Protonix to help with the acid in my stomach. I haven't noticed it working yet (it's only been a few days) but it's worth something to ask about. My OB said the nausea is something I will just have to wait out.
You are right...it can be 24/7 and it is no fun! Anything with ginger in it helped me...not completely, but at least so I could function and take care of my other kids. I found that keeping a little food in your stomach at all times is helpful.. Do not let yourself get too hungry. Ginger snaps, ginger ale....both helpful. I kept them with me at all times, even when I was running errands. I even kept ginger snaps and ginger ale by my bed because I would wake up at night feeling queasy. Graze on healthy food throughout the day. Many small meals are better than three big ones. If it's any consolation, I have heard that morning sickness is a sign of a strong baby....not sure if that is true or not, but it kept me going throughout my third pregnancy. Good luck and God bless.
I had this problem when I was pregnant with my daughter. I would have to eat several small meals a day. Sometimes the last thing I felt like doing was eating, but it really helped with the nausea. I would eat a piece of bread or a little bit of plain pasta. If it's really bad, you can talk to your OB. There are medicines you can take that will help. Also, taking your prenatal vitamins at night may help too. Drink lots of water too.
I'm a little old to be dealing with these problems, but my second daughter insisted that I at least read them. I don't think there is a set pattern for morning sickness.
With my first one I was sick most of the day. With my second I was sick in the evening and at night. With the third, the only boy, i was barely sick at all--seldom sick enough to have to vomit. Good old saltine crackers. You can't beat them. I know it's hard to do, but don't let the small s--t bother you. Work at staying calm and telling the baby how much you want him/her. Nana F. PS Don't forget to pay lots of attention to the other child. VERY IMPORTANT
Instead of using meds, try some natural remedy. I have been at my wits end as you're now and No to morning sickness tea was my lifesaver.
Hi, L.!
Check out www.earthmamaangelbaby.com. They have a morning wellness tea and happy mama spray (organic.) I've heard and read great reviews about these products. Unfortunately, I found the product line after I had gotten past my 24/7 morning sickness! I have purchased some of their other products, though, and love them!!
Good luck ... and Happy Holidays : )
A.
I echo others . . . ZOFRAN!!
Try other remedies if they work for you, but nothing but zofran worked for any of my pregnancies (I'm 12 weeks along on #3 now). It has been my lifesaver! I take it right away when I wake up, then stay in bed for about 20 minutes or so (thanks to my husband who has been great at getting up with our other 2 boys!). It enables me to actually eat and drink as I should (although still not a huge appetite and I still manage to loose weight during the first trimester) - and more importantly function as a mom to my other 2 boys!
Hang in there! I pray this does not last the entire pregnancy, although 12-14 weeks is common - sorry!
Ugh, I know all about this. I was so sick I evenutally had to be put on I.V.s and had to take them with me whenever I went anywhere. Mine was so severe the doctor let me take Zofran, which is a great anti-nauseau medication, but very expensive. Before I did that, I tried taking 1/2 a unisom tablet and a B-6 vitamin twice a day. That really helped too, but made me extremly sleepy!
Some other things that helped:
ginger snaps (or, now that it is almost Christmas, you could try Ginger bread) -- the ginger helps the tummy
I think I ate my weight in saltines (eventually this stopped helping)
No Caffiene! It made me so sick.
No artificial sweetners (made me yack)
for some reason anything cinnamon (cinnamon rolls, candy, ect.) really worked.
And, OH! I almost forgot the best thing I tried -- Preggy Pops! They have them at BabiesRUs and also at the motherhood maternitiy stores. I used the preggy pop drops (they are sour). These really, really REALLY helped a lot. They are candy that you suck on that have vitimins and other stuff in them that help settle your tummy. I would highly reccomend them!
Hope this helps!
I had the 24/7 thing and just found that if I ate within 30 mins of a twinge of hunger, that usually really helped...or else I got the dry heaves or threw up anything that was in there. I was still a bit nausus, but not nearly as bad.
Take care,
H.
L.,
Ugh. I've been there. My first pregnancy I was sick about 5 minutes. With my 2nd . . .I was sick for the first 12 weeks. It was awful (both of them were boys by the way . . everyone was convinced my 2nd one was a girl by this).
Know that this "crappy" feeling is a great sign of a healthy pregnancy. My midwife shared all the other tips that everyone else has shared with you. Also, change locations. Don't just lay in your room, go to the couch or a guest room.
Rest as much as you can, keep your fluids up. If water makes you sick (it did for me), put a little lemon juice in it. Or SOMETHING that doesn't make you want to barf. Or get up and go outside (its cold), but maybe take a drive or something. Does any food sound good? Nothing sounded good to me. My husband took over the grocery shopping, because the *thought* of the store made me want to hurl. He bought all my favorite foods, but I didn't want anything. He suggested my favorite restaurants and it made my stomach turn even more.
Just know that the sickness will start to taper off and you will have a good day and then some more good days and then one day, you will just feel better.
If you do B vitamins a few times a day, but especially before bed or take one when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
Hang in there.
B.
Yep, I've been ther myself! I too had no m/s with #1 but #2 kicked my butt from about week 6-15!! I would eat small snacks meals, drink lots of water, crackers, I do hear that ginger helps too. Have you tried those preggie pops? Hang in there, It'll be over soon enough...
You can get these at babies R Us or online or at some of the maternity shops.
They taste like candy..You can get them in lolipop form or individual wrap. They come in different flavors and definitely take the edge off. Like you I had mornig sickness 24/7 and I still had my older daughter to take care of!
Good luck
B6 was recommended by my doctor for morning sickness. Check with your doctor and see is this will work for you.
L.
Always keep something in your stomach. Each more small meals to achieve that goal. Try keeping citrus by you for when you feel quesy; the scent is supposed to help alleviate the nausea. Hopefully it will end soon. Good luck. K.
L.,
I was horribly sick for 18 weeks. It does help to keep something in your stomach if you can manage. Cheerios are easy to swallow without having to chew too much. I couldn't drink anything either so I tried lemon Italian ice. A friend of mine said yellow peppers helped her, but I couldn't stand the smell. Good luck- it will get better!
use warm water to brush your teeth, not cold. There isn't alot you can do unfortunately. I hope you feel better soon!
I know exactly what you are going through...I had severe morning sickness all 9 months with my son Hunter. However I did throw up..just about everything I ate some days including water or ice chips. All I can say is small meals..snack size about every 2 hours or so and try to drink as much water as you can. You will need to stay hydrated especially if you do start to throw up, or you'll end up in the ER with IV's like I did about 6 times...NOT FUN. Also I know that my Aunt said that Coke worked really well for her so that might be something to try as well. Another tip which I'm sure you've been told is make sure you put something in your mouth..AKA a cracker..before your feet even hit the floor in the morning. This didn't work for me and I still threw whatever it was I ate up but I know that has helped a lot of my friends ok. I hope this advice helps.
I had it 24/7 for 17 weeks and I found the "Sea Bands" that they sell at Walgreens or another drug store to work great. Theyput pressure on a pressure point in your wrist to help the nausea. They are primarily used for motion sickness but are now being marketed for pregnancy also (it says on the packaging.) Good luck and I feel for you!
Try this ginger tea: Buy a small fresh ginger root (you can find at Jewel or Dominick's).
Remove the outer brown tough part with a knife. Grate the inner yellow part with a cheese grater. You want about one heaping tablespoon of fresh grated ginger. Add the ginger to two cups boiling water and steep for 5 min. Use a small collander to strain out the ginger leaving you with only the liquid left (you can also use a fancy tea strainer if you have one). Drink once in the morning and once at night. Hope this helps!
Note: fresh mint is also a natural aid used to combat nausea, but avoid this during pregnancy as it is often linked with muscle problems in the developing fetus.
L.,
The good news is - everyone is different! While some of these other posts say their morning sickness lasted months and months (mine actually lasted 7 months with my first child! If he weren't so awesome, I wouldn't even consider having another one.) And others it only lasted a few weeks. I truly hope you are among that second category!
The bad news is - everyone is different! What works for some people, won't work for others. I tried everything listed here (with the exception of the SeaBands. I'm keeping a mental note to try those with my next pregnancy.) and nothing worked for me. My doctor had me try 3 different anti-nausea medications. One of them worked for a week, and then stopped. One of them worked for a day, and then stopped. Then she prescribed Zofran. HALLELUJIAH! This stuff is incredible. I had to take it 3 times a day for the first few months I was on it. I kept trying to wean myself off of it until finally around month 5 I was able to drop down to 2 times a day, and once I was able to drop down to once a day, it wasn't long after that I was able to stop taking it.
My suggestion is to try all of these awesome tips. See if any of them help you BEFORE you resort to trying the drugs. (FYI: I met my annual deductible by the middle of February because of the cost of these pills, and I could only get 10 at a time so I was at the drug store every few days refilling the darn prescription.) If Preggie Pops work for you, stock up! If the tea helps, drink up! But if nothing seems to work, ask your doctor about Zofran (I sound like a tv announcer). You can be pretty confident that THAT will work.
I suffered with Hyperemesis throughout both of my pregnancies. The worst was not the vomitting, it was the constant nausea. I tried all the tricks, nothing helped. After losing a lot of weight I finally ended up taking some medication that the doctor prescribed, Zofran. It helped with my first, but not as much with my second. With my second it really only stopped the vomiting, the nausea was still there for the most part. If it is really bad, talk to your doctor, he/she may be able to prescribe something.
Accept any and all offers of help with your little boy and sleep sleep sleep as much as you can.
vit b6 and ginger helped me
