Sam E. and I must have been raised in the same old-fashioned home or community--saltine crackers and ginger ale.
Hello Mom's,
Just wanted to pick your brains to see if any of you have any ideas or heard any on what to do about morning sickness. My friend has been sick for weeks all day and it is her third child so if you have any advice I would love to share it with her. She is at a point where she will try anything. I never had extreme morning sickness mine was just not to eat before 10am and after 10pm. Thanks in advance for all your help!
She ended up doing the Popsicles, Thank you everyone for your ideas she liked all of them.

first thing in the morning i would eat a handful of crackers and drink gingerale ..and on worse days ate some tums.. it didnt completely aleviate it on the bad days but it helped enough that i could function
She needs to talk to her Dr about the prescription Zofran if other natural remedies aren't working. It's the only thing that really made an effect on my very severe nausea. It kept me out of the hospital having to be put on feeding tubes. Also, Phenigrin doesn't usually work for most people, so if her Dr. suggests that, she should just tell him, " no, I'll take the Zofran".
Ditto Momma L.
I couldn't function with pregnancy #2. Barely could with #1. But with the second, chasing around a 2 year old boy... it was impossible. Hubby burned a lot of sick/family leave in the first trimester. But it didn't go away or ease up. We sent our 2 yr old to stay with grandparents. It didn't ease up. Doctor offered phenergen... it may have helped a tiny bit, but it made me sleep. Medicine you can't take, can't help you. I couldn't be sleeping, I had a 2 year old to take care of.
Finally, he offered to let me try Zofran. It made a WORLD of difference. I still felt the nausea....but it was a minor irritation for the most part that I could deal with and manage to get through the day. Without it..... I was a lump in the bed or on the sofa, in misery and no help to anybody.
Is it safe? My daughter is almost 11 years now. She is beautiful, smart, funny and perfectly healthy.
ETA: For the record--for all of you recommending saltines and ginger ale. Some of us tried those things first, too. Along with Sea Bands. Eating all day. Changing prenatal vitamins. And a host of other home remedies. They didn't work. And don't work for everyone. There is a "condition" known as hyperemesis gravidarum that home remedies just aren't enough to help with. Doctors have more they can offer for this that can help. And usually they don't offer it until the mom has tried all the other stuff and had no success. And often, for the moms who have it like that (like I did) it doesn't end after the first trimester. I had nausea every single day of my pregnancy (both times) until I went into hard labor with them. It isn't just a few weeks you have to get through. It is the entire pregnancy. I feel for every mom who has morning sickness, but especially for those that suffer with it every day of their pregnancy, not just the first 12 weeks.
I had morning sickness everyday, even while in labor.. Freaked the L&D nurse out. My husband said, "Oh, it must be 7:30, she does this every morning."
I tried everything.. Ginger ale, crackers, meds.. Finally realized, if I just brushed my teeth, vomited, and then brushed my teeth again I was fine for the rest of the day..
I just go used to it. Baby was healthy and was able to work up till I went into labor. I even was on a 2 week business trip the week before I went into labor..
My suggestion would be to spell her for a couple hours, if and when you can. I had a friend who was barfy all day and the best thing I could do for her was hook her up with a competent mother's helper, basically so she could throw up in peace.
You're a good friend to be so concerned. One thing that did help me deal with the nausea was seabands, those elastic pressure point things people wear when traveling. They sell them at drugstores. And not eating any solid food right away in the morning. I usually had a vanilla soy steamer and then waited until I got to work (the family I nannied for made pancakes every morning.. before then, I hated pancakes. When I was pregnant, it was the only thing that settled my stomach in the morning. Maybe the baking soda?).
Cinnamon ---- tell her to keep some Cinnamon Toast Cereal with her at all times. But anything with cinnamon will work --just make sure it's real cinnamon.
Ginger -- you can get candied ginger in the same place as the flour and sugar and dried fruit are at the grocery store.--Ginger snap cookies.
Chamomile tea or chamomile mixed with mint or mint tea. Just make sure the mint tea does not have pennyroyal ---- pennyroyal is a member of the mint family and will cause a miscarriage.
Has she talked with her doctor about finding a cocktail of anti-nausea meds that might work?
For her: Even though you don't feel like it, eat. Don't let yourself get hungry or too full. Wait to drink. I ate candied ginger and jolly ranchers and they did help. Also, preggie pops helped some. I eat peanut butter crackers in the middle of the night to avoid excessive hunger and then just wait it out. Usually, by week 12/13 I'm getting over it. 3 months can seem like an eternity. The positive is that it is a sure sign that she is still pregnant! It is awful though.
My doctor told me to make sure I stayed hydrated and it really worked for me. I rode a commuter train every day and worked full time until my daughter was born so I could not afford to be slowed down by morning sickness. I would have a glass of water or gatorade first thing in the morning and keep it up throughout the day. Yes, you pee a lot but it's much better than being nauseated all the time. Good luck!
Oh, I remember those days.....and don't miss them one bit!
I used ginger gum. It got me through the really powerful nauseau. I would pop a piece, sit on the bed, close my eyes, and wait.
I got it at Walgreens. It was SEA BAND brand. Looked like little white chiclets.
I couldn't do the sour candies.
I use to suck on peppermint candies... they really seemed to help me a lot!
Preggie Pops?
Preggie Pops or Preggie Pop drops are wonderful and have helped me. They are at Babies R Us, Motherhood, or online through Amazon.
I was only mildly sick in the first trimester with both of my boys, but I noticed that drinking ginger tea and eating ginger candy helped me a lot. I hope she feels better soon!
