My Niece is about 7 to 8 weeks pregnant, she is suffering from severe morning sickness and is lactose intolerant on top of it. We were talking last night about things she could eat that would be easy on her stomache. When we are at work there are no ice chips and most drinks are not working on her stomache. We have found mashed or baked potatoes, oatmeal, maybe gingerale, depending on how sick she is. (she is on meds for the morning sickness, but she still was sick last night) i suggested jello and different veggies. she is going to try them. any suggestions would be helpful and welcome. Thank You

I did ice water w/ lots of lemon and LOVED having my vent in the car blow air-conditioning on me. The cool breeze on my face helped me feel a bit better, albeit temporarily.

Other than that, I tried everything that people suggested, and although nothing really worked, it did distract me - by the time I was done w/ everyone's suggestions, the morning sickness itself finally went away..

I actually found that a little caffeine free coca cola settled my stomach quite well when i was pregnant.

I suffered severly from Morning Sickness. I could not work, or drive. My Doctor prescribed Zofran for me. It dissolved on my tongue, so I would not have to swallow and then get sick. I found carbs, bread and Ginger Ale worked well. Also my Doctor said to eat Almonds. They take a long time to digest, keeping something in your tummy longer. The key is really to try to have something in your stomach all the time. Good Luck :)

I was prescribed Zofran but I didn't take this medicine due to a long list of its side effects. Instead, I used "no to morning sickness tea" that helped a lot and eased my morning sickness instantly and safely.

During my three pregnancies I was sick almost every single day. I used to eat mashed potatos, oatmeal or scrambled eggs without milk every single day for breakfast and lunch for nine months, even at work. Thank goodness for a sympathetic cook at the restaurant around the corner. Once I got past lunch, I was able to eat everything except chicken and bananas. I did try the bands you wear on your wrist - didn't work. Eat 6 smaller meals instead of three regular ones and have a snack with protein before bed like a slice of toast with peanut butter on it - keep something in your stomach all the time and keep trying to find foods you can tolerate.

Oh I so sympathize with her.....My 2nd pregnancy was just like that. Old school style..my mom suggested sucking a lemon or lemonade. Sucking the lemon worked wonders on some days. You can also try sugar and water, they give this to naval officers that are always at sea and seasick. The key they say is the sugar, so you might want to try a little sugar on the tongue. I personally found comfort in carbs.....crackers bagels... italian bread worked the best. Try ginger ale or coke without the gas, shake it up and let the gas out, so it's flat and drink in gulps. Hope this helps somehow....good luck!

I had "morning" sickness 24/7 and found Sea Bands helpful -- they are wristbands for motion sickness, sold in pharmacies. Also, Trader Joe's sells all-fruit popsicles that I lived on, and I also ate a ton of Chinese restaurant egg drop soup...

T.,
Let your niece know I know how she feels. My youngest is now 9 months old and my pregnancy with her was tough. I had constant nausea the whole time. the doctor put me on Zofran which really helped. I found that I felt better if I kept my stomach full, which is hard when you are feeling bad. I drank a lot of ginger ale and decaf green tea. I ate a lot of toast, crackers, pretzels, pop tarts and dry cereal. the cereal worked great because it was easy to have with me at all times. I have two older kids (7 years and 5 years) and everytime we left the house they would ask me if I had my bag of cereal. I am fortunate enough to be able to work from home now, but with my first two pregnancies I worked outside the house. snack foods at my desk were the key to keeping me full. In the beginning of my pregnancies when I was feeling sick I tried to stick to healthy fruits and veggies, but they only made me feel sicker. Just tell your niece to eat whatever seems appealing to her. I remember one day I ate nothing but Oreos all day. Now that the weather is getting nicer she can even try getting out of the house and walking. Not only is it good exercise, but it is also good for her and the baby to get the fresh air. Good Luck!!

I realize this is totally bizarre, but my doctor recommended it (of all people) and it worked like a charm for me: lemonade and potato chips. Together, as one snack. No joke.

Avoid orange juice in the morning- this was a suggestion a midwife gave me and I did notice it improved the sitation. And I made a tea with ginger extract and honey that helped. Also, in the natural section of your grocery store, the "real" gingerales that actually contain ginger, do a lot more for nausea than sugar/corn syrup filled ginger flavored ale.

The only thing that worked for me when I had terrible morning sickness was to eat carbs- mashed potatoes, bread, toast, bagels, muffins, cookies, cereals. Sniffing lemons also helped as well as gingerale made with real ginger extract. Peppermints like candy canes were also my friends. I had it bad for four months with both my pregnancies but after that it passed. So, tell your niece to hang in there and congrats!

Oh, my sympathies - I still get nauseous when I smell a certain brand of liquid soap that I used to use when I was pregnant - 9 years ago!
I couldn't drink anything, so I got liquid from watermelon and jello. I had the best relief from never letting my stomach get empty, eating saltines, a little bit of bagel, sweet potatoes and whatever sounded good - my pediatrician told me she ate chocolate chip cookies and orange soda every morning for the first 3 months.

The good news is that morning sickness is a sign of a healthy pregnancy, she is much less likely to miscarry.

I also had significant relief from accupressure massage - to the point I could go from lying in bed with a cloth over my eyes, to quietly playing with my 3 and 5 year olds.

Ginger capsules have also done wonders for me - Mythbusters found they were more effective than dramamine for motion sickness - but of course ask your doctor before taking any supplements!

Good luck to her!!

I was on the zophran as well with 4 of my 5 pregnancies and it will not take the sickness away completely but it does help lessen it...instead of vomitting20-30x's a day I'd be down to 5-10...but it helps stop the rapid weight loss ( I lost 15 pounds with my last baby)...I lived on salty french fries from Wendy's and ice pops for the first 26weeks, all babies were healthy(and to this day love fries...joke). the baby will take what it needs from mommy and be fine, eat what she can and the rest will come in time....give her my best, I so know the feeling but it is all just a memory once she holds that precious baby.
