Hello, Does anyone know of some Mommy & Me classes in the westside/southbay area??? I'm a speech therapist and would like to recommend some classes or places mom's can go so their kids can socialize and interact with other kids. (ages 3 and younger)

What can I do next?

There's a great class at the YWCA in Santa Monica. The classes are run by Barbara Olinger who has been working with children and families for a long time. She is very gentle and loving toward the children, and very supportive of the parents in her class. Classes consist of singing, playing with bubbles, parachutes, big blocks to climb, etc. Throughout class, she answers parents' questions and gives great advice. Classes are also reasonably priced.

Check out the site, parentingtots.org. The Early Childhood Parenting Center was at Cedars-Sinai for many years and moved to the Westside/Santa Monica area as an independent center about 5 years ago. It has had a free Parenting Warm Line for over 30 years. It's goal is to facilitate the best relationship possible between the parent and the child. It has many groups, according to the child's age. The leaders are all have a background in child development and most have advanced degrees in either early childhood education and/or psychology or social work. It is a training center, also, for graduate students from local MFT and PhD programs in psychology.

Disclosure: I'm one of the leaders in ECPC. My Master's is in Early Childhood Education/Educational Psychology from CSUN. I have adult twin sons and will be a grandmother in June!

Good luck in your search!

Judy

Here are a few ideas for South Bay Area
1. South Bay Adult School
2. My Gym, several locations
3. Art Zone, Hermosa Beach
4. MOMS Club International - chapters all over. No classes, volunteer based playgroups
5. MOPS, chapters all over.
All should have websites.

Hi A. -

St. John's Hospital has a great group, run by a wonderful woman (at least it did when my daughter was a baby). Also there's a place in Westchester called Emerson that has classes and groups. And in the South Bay/Westside area there's a free newsletter called "The Daisy Chain" that lists all kinds of things for people with young children to join and do. It gives contact information for Mom's Club chapters too.

I hope that helps and I wish you all the best. You must be a really great speech therapist, one who looks at more than just the physical aspect of speech. Good for you and good for your clients.

Regards,
Colleen

My daughter and I go to Mommy & me class through South Bay Adult school (southbayadult.org) We started when she was about 3 months old and have continued to take classes with the same group of moms so it's been really fun to see the kids grow up together. The class is super affordable.

We also go to MyGym and Sign Language/Music class at Wondernation in Manhattan Beach. These are a bit more - generally about $15-$20 per class.

Hi
I live in the south bay and there are tons of classes that they can do like My Gym, Torrance parks and recs have classes like mommy and me ballet/dance or a preschool type setting where parents attend with their kids. There are also music enrichment places like Music rhapsody in Redondo Beach. She should talk to her regional center counselor for ideas and resources in the area.

The YMCA culver city, WLA and Westchester have mommy and me classes. Also at the Westside Pavilion is Gymboree, Music and Me, and Worldspeak but are all a little pricey. Once a year, there is a family retreat for moms with children in San Diego. See aboverubies.org Under the Sea and Child's Play are fun places just to take children that age. There is also an indoor play area at the westside pavilion and fox hills mall. Parks are always fun and free. MOPS is great, esp for new moms and is all over.

Hello,

RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) at RIE.org has wonderful Parent/Infant programs for families with children from 3 months to 2 and a half or so. It is non-invasive, supportive and based on both respect and trust in the child's abilities as well as their competence in play and socialization. Children are allowed to interact freely while parents observe and learn what their children can do. Questions are answered in discussions that follow with the trained RIE professional that leads each group. Based on the work of Hungarian Educarer, Magda Gerber and her studies as adapted for families in the United States, this work began in Budapest over 50 years ago, Check into both Pikler.org and RIE.org for more information on this wonderful approach to raising children in todays over stimulated world. I have worked both therapeutically and as Director of a Play Center working with 2 to 5 year olds that is based on this philosophy for over 25 years. I think it would be a wonderful resource for you and could tell you individual stories of success working with speech issues too.

If you're willing to come down to Manhattan Beach - check out the classes that Tracy Blender teaches through the City of MB - Tracy's Tunes and Tales - I think the youngest classes start at 6 mos - 1 year. It's a great socialization experience for both moms/dads and kids - she spends time at each class discussing issues in development or concerns of parents - and the kids learn to share and sit at the table while having time to play, dance, sing, read and do art projects. Check out www.netreg.info for the details.

Hi A.,

I conduct a mommy and me class but for 0-6 mo olds. I have my masters and am a PhD candidate in prenatal and perinatal psychology and have a private practice in Manhattan Beach. I specialize in helping parents or pre-parents understand how conception, time in the womb, the birth and bonding with mom affect a child's development for the rest of his/her life. I work with parents who had stressful pregnancies or births, who are struggling with any infant behaviors (sleeping, breast/bottle feeding, crying) and parents (at any stage) who want to create ideal births and environments for their children's growth and development. I even work with parents pre-conceptionally.

The first monday of every month I offer a free informational session at my office, 1112 Ocean Dr. #102, MB, where anyone can come and ask questions around conception, pregnancy, birth, infancy, bonding, any behavioral issues, healing their own early development, etc... It is from 9-10:30am. My phone is ###-###-#### if anyone has any questions. But this is offered free as a public service for the south bay community.

Mommy and me classes for older children, try Tracie Tots in the bulletin for City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation. That's where you can also find out information about my class. Website for that is www.citymb.info.

Hope this helps.

I love the program & there are classes for every age group almost every day. The classes are great & such a great support system. Check out southbayadultschool.org for more information. Classes run year round but are compatible with the public school calender here. Also, music raphsody & my gym have fun classes but the south bay adult school classes parents have much more interaction & disscussion! Hope that helps!

South Bay Adult School offers Mommy & Me. They are called "parenting classes." Prices there are the lowest I could find back when I was looking for a class. Since it's parents education, the State of California suppliments 2/3 of the admission. The instructors are excellent and many of them have Masters Degrees.
