Mom's Medical Problems

Several years ago, my mom had diverticulitis, then shortly after being treated for it, she found that she had developed severe allergies to several medications, such as penicillin, the -caine family of pain killers, and benadryl. Not very convenient allergies to have. Then she had to have her gallbladder removed, and when they took it out, they found that it was really bad. They even asked permission to photgraph it, beacuse it was such an extreme case. Now she is experiencing swelling of her hands and other parts of her body. She's also fairly overweight, which I know doesn't help much. Most of her weight is in the abdomen and upper legs. The question is, what could be causing her swelling? She's had her kidneys, thyroid, liver, hormones checked out, but they don't know what's causing it. Should she see an allergist/immunologist? Could it be the start of arthritis? Could it be heart related? Should she see some other specialist? She is in her late 50s.

What can I do next?

I agree with Janet that heart issues can cause fluid relention big time. If her general doctor can't figure it out then she should ask him for a referal to a cardiologist who can look into it.

Also check her medications to see what side effects they have. My mom started on cholesterol medication and started having weakness. Her pcp diagnosed her with lyme disease and put her on antibiotics for a month. She ended up at a specialist and he took her off the cholesterol medication and her weakness went away.

First I am not a doctor is she getting enough to eat and drink? Are there any new meds or old with these side effects? Does her GP think something else is going on?my parents need referrals to see specialists so go back to to the GP and talk over all your concerns write them down and make sure all your questions are answered and if that doctor can not answer them have him get you to someone who can. Good Luck!

I agree with starting with her primary care doc; however, I'd be pretty forward about asking for areferral to an allergist if the primary seems stumped. Also consider a nutritionist. good luck

Heart problems can cause swelling as can other circulatory things. I am hoping they checked out her blood pressure when they looked at everything else. Are her electrolytes ok? I would ask for an opinion from an internal medicine doctor. They are good at figuring out things like this.
