Hello,
I was born in Brazil and became an American citizen after living for 13ys in NY. Five years ago while on vacation in Rio de Janeiro I became a Mom to an abandoned baby boy, Diego. Now, the adoption process is finally coming to an end. I rarely left Brazil all this time and need some help finding my wonderful, clever, beautiful boy an appropriate school in the NY area. His English understanding is quite good but he speaks only basics. ANY insight and opinion is absolutely welcome! Thank You, M..

In terms of schools I am not sure abot any offering Portuguese but many children do attend school without English being fluent. I moved to Denmark when I was 5 and was enrolled into the local school the follwoing week. Nobody spoke English except for my teacher and even she tried to use it only when I really needed. I learned the language very quickly so I am sure that your son will pick up English quickly. This is a good age to learn languages and if he is immersed in English at school it wont take long.

Good luck.

You might check out the United Nations school. It is definitely set up for international families. My friend used to teach kindergarten there. I think it is in Queens but I am not sure the neighborhood. My friend moved to Forest Hills to be near work.

Hi M., What a lucky boy to have found you. Most schools in New York have an ESL program (English as a 2nd Language) Most will have Spanish teachers and I know Brazil is a Portugese speaking country. Your boy will have no problem because kids pick up quickly. I taught in a program where children and parents came from many different countries and all did very well in the same class. Maybe someone will have a mors specific recommendation. My best, Grandma Mary
