Mom Seeking Advice on Symptoms of Teething

My 4 month old son has not been acting himself lately, and my mom thought it could be b/c he was starting to teeth. In checking the symptoms on webmd.com is makes sense - mild fever, grooling, coughing, diarrhea, constantly chewing things, inconsistent eating habits, irritability - he seems to fit the text book description to a tea. He is not sick and has a happy disposition (most of the time). In my research online nothing was mention about diaper rash though - is it normal for babies to get a diaper rash around the time he was teething?? I haven't changed anything (diet, diapers wipes, diapers, laundry detergent, ect) and all of a sudden he has a diaper rash. He has never had one before. Just curious if this is coincidence or related. It just popped up today and I have been lathering diaper rash cream on him every change since the discovery. Hoping that it will clear in a day or two.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice - much appreciated! While teething may be a possibility, I really think that the diarehhea is what caused the diaper rash. Lathered the little guy w/ diaper rash cream for a day or two and it disappeared.

In my experience diaper rash can often come with diarrhea. Babies bottoms are sensitive and any change can cause diaper rash. You are doing exactly the right thing. Keep baby comfortable and it should clear up. There are old time recipes for diaper rash that might also work.

With all the drooling, they are swallowing some of it, hence the diaper rash. Use washcloths or paper towels if his skin is broken down or so irritated it seems to hurt when you wipe. Most wipes have some type of alcohol in it so it does burn when you use them on irritated skin.

I had 6 children and I thought they were especially sensitive when teething....all the things you mentioned plus diaper rash.
Also, if the rash is deep red and raw it might be a yeast infection and needs to be seen by the doctor.

Yeah, I remember all those and the diaper rash too.

With the diaper rash, we used Bag Balm (green can, near the regular lotion in the stores).

With the teething, you might try getting the baby orajel swabs, and see what happens when you use one when he's being cranky. I remember both of our daughters when they realized we were getting ready to swab their gums with it, they couldn't wait - and they'd even suck the medicine out of the tube.

Good luck!

It amazes me how teething can effect different babies. I definitely think it is possible the diaper rash is related. My daughter would get pimples on her butt when she was teething. How does that make any sense? My son would get an ear infection and both kids got stuffy/running noses during the time. What does your butt, ears and nose have to do with your teeth. Funny. Anyway, I think it is possible.

Sounds like teething to me. Diaper rash is very, very common with teething despite what your doctor tells you. They all claim that they are not related and most moms have dealt with enough teething and diaper rashes together to know they are.

Oh, yes I remember the diaper rashes with both of my sons. I used lots of ointment, too.

Its more likely a chemical burn due to the diarrhea. Stomach acid can cause a burn on the babies bottem if the diarrhea is really baby use a goog protectent. A 50/50 combination of maylox and aquapher works really well and if the "Rash" is caused by the stomach acid you will see an improvement within hours. Good luck.

a baby cutting teeth creates alot of saliva in there mouth which can then cause looser stools....and more often. In my experience when my baby girl has alot of BM's in a day, she will get a diaper rash. The severity of the rash depends on what she ate (I breastfed, so if I ate jalapeno's...its rash city). Diaper rash is not a sign of your baby cutting teeth but it can be part of it because of the extra drool. Let me know how long it lasts. My little one is 22 weeks and has been doing that since week 18 and I STILL dont see any teeth. They say it can be a couple months

Perfectly normal! My daughter always got diarrhea when she teethed, which what causes the diaper rash. Hers would get terrible! All the constant wiping and such just seemed to irritate it. We would switch from using wipes to using a warm washcloth with water. If it's really messy, you can use a touch of baby soap, just make sure you wipe it all off good. Like you said, slather on the diaper rash cream. Don't rub it in. You want to be able to see the layer on his little tush. Of course, change him as soon as he's wet or dirty (which I'm sure you do). To help with the teething, you can give him a teether (which I was never a fan of) or take a washcloth, get it damp and then toss it in the freezer. When it's frozen, take it out and let him chew on it. They also sell mesh feeders just about everywhere. We would put frozen fruit in them and let my dd chew on them. The mesh bag keeps the fruit in, but lets them get the juice. You can also put ice cubes in them. http://www.munchkin.com/products/detail.html?pID=37 Tylenol and Orajel also work wonders! Good luck! Teething can be no fun for anyone.

Yes, I have a sister who has 3 children and her kiddos would get a diaper rash with teething because their poopy was more acidic with teething for some reason. Also, fyi, Balmex works like a charm for diaper rash!

Good luck! Have you tried teething tablets, those also work well for teething symptoms and it is a natural product.

K.,

Yes it is normal for babies to get a diaper rash when they are teething. A great product to use for diaper rash is Aquaphor. My diaper had a diaper rash (first one) and the doctor told me it was from teething and she recommended Aquaphor and the rash was significantly better the next day and gone by day two of using this product. I applied the Aquaphor before I left the doctor's office and by the next diaper change I could see that it was working. Good luck with your little one. My daughter is nine months old and is just now getting ready to pop a tooth through. She has had all of the symptoms of teething since she was three months old but just now it is starting to look like a tooth might come through. It's crazy.

Yes it is normal. My daughter, who will be 2 in July, had diaper rash the whole time she was teething. I used a warm cloth to wipe her because wipes will hurt. Also i made sure she was completely dried off before adding cream. I used diaper cream mixed of Maloxx (sp?) and Aquapor cream. When you mix them they will come out very creamy so keep mixing. Worked perfectly and still does when she needs it! Hope this helps.
