Mom on Antibiotics and Feeling Sick

The other morning my cat who sleeps curled up by my side every night apparently thought I was his prey. I was in a hurry and he grabbed my wrist and left a small bite. I took proper care of my injury, but when I showed it to my school nurse, she told me to get to my dr. right away. So now I'm on Augmentin. I remember the awful diapers my son had with this drug as a baby. I am eating two Activia yogurts daily in addition to Culturelle, a probiotic supplement. I start the day okay, but by noon I feel nauseous and have diarrhea. I start feeling better by around 2P.M., but have no appetite until bed time. Does anyone have any suggestions? Obviously a little gastro upset is better than becoming seriously ill from a cat bite. Maybe I'll finally lose weight!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the advice about too much Activia. I completely forgot that one of my friends had stomach cramps when she ate Activia. I started eating my regular Yoplait at lunch and a Culturelle before bed, and I was fine.

Are you on any other meds?Maybe you can ask for a different antibiotic... Augmentin is pretty tough on the stomach...Last year, my son wound up on both Augmentin and prednisone(also harsh on the stomach) at the same time ---yuck!!!!!--and he kept throwing up the Augmentin...sooo, pedi switched anitbiotics and that took care of the gastric issues...feel better

Perhaps you should ask the doc if this antibiotic reacts well to the other meds you're taking. Often the reason we have some sort of reaction is because we're eating incorrectly with it. Some antibiotics are to be taken and no dairy is allowed.

I'd say the pharmacist is the one you need to ask. There are lots of other antibiotics one can take for this type of injury too. Next time tell the doc you can't take this one. They'll pick one that's not in this family.

Rita:

You need to tell your pharmacist any and all drugs you are taking...including OTC meds.

it is TOTALLY normal to have diarrhea while taking antibiotics. The nausea might be normal too. However, you should call the pharmacist and tell them the problems you are having. They might recommend another antibiotic to your doctor and get you better.

Yes, you can get seriously ill from cat bites and scratches. not to scare, you but yeah...you can.

You're eating too much Activia! That particular brand is promoted as keeping you regular, but in your case it is having a laxative effect.

Take the Culturelle, skip the yogurt.

Augmentin is harsh. My daughter couldn't take it, so the pedi switched her to a different antibiotic. Maybe you can get yours switched as well.

Feel better soon!

If you're taking it with food and still having this problem, call your doc and ask for something else. There are other antibiotics that will cover anything they are worried about you getting.

The diarrhea is from the meds and if you are not eating or having enough food that can cause nausea. If it keeps up ask for different meds.

No doubt it is a result of the Augmentin. Be sure you are taking with food, and not on an empty stomach. My prescription for Augmentin had a label on the bottle to be sure to take with food. I have been on it almost the whole 10 days of the rx for a sinus infection and early on, I felt sort of queasy, but after about 4 or 5 days, I no longer had the stomach issues, but have decrease in appetite.
