I don't know if this is the Avon stuff, but SOS by Avon worked for me. It's liquid so you can use it like a lotion and coat every portion. If nothing else, I would contact my Dr. for something that's better than OFF. Good luck!
I need any advice on how not to get bitten by mosquitos. TO start off with I have used everything known to man as a deterent. If I spray myself they fly in places they shouldn't be. If I wear jeans(in NC in 100 degree heat), they bite around my wrists, on my hands , and ANYWHERE they can get blood. I am so tired of not being able to go outside with my husband and children. My husband even bought the cutter that you spray in the yard and that stuff isn't cheap. I can walk outside to get the mail get bitten. My Mom felt bad and bought spray from Avon and it worked the 1st time and no more after. PLease, please, please somebody, anybody help!!!!!
HI ! Thanks to everyone who responded, I think the one that worked best was the dryer towels/sheets. It didn't make me sticky and kept the mosquitos away. Just as an FYI the stuff my mom bought was Skin So Soft Bug Guard plus Picardin. I remember being a kid and my mom trying the oil based SSS and it not working either. But in any case thanks for the suggestions and I appreciate all the concern! -A.

My three year old son used to get bitten constantly. I made my own mosquito repellant, and it has worked wonders. Just take a few tablespoons of olive oil (any vegetable oil will work) and add enough citronella essential oil (you can find it at Wild Oats or any other whole foods store) so that you can smell it. Mix together, store in a small jar or bottle. Use a cotton ball to put it on. Also, my pediatrician suggested using garlic. I know on some natural parenting sites they recommend taking part of a clove in a little honey every day. If you are bitten tea tree oil works great. I hope this helps.

Ahsley,
When I lived in NC I was given a recipe for a lemon spray that you put on your plants and bushes and yard (way cheaper than the cutter) it worked really well to keep mosquitos away.
1 cup lemon dishwashing detergent, 1/2 cup lemon amonia and then put it in a sprayer attached to your hose) spray everything except for yourself/children it won't harm your flowers or plants. I also suggest taking garlic pills, my doctor recommended them to me, and I too get literally eaten alive when I am outside if I have not taken garlic. Now it takes awhile for it to build up in your system (about 1 week) but mosquitos don't like it. The avon skin so soft, never worked for me, my dr. said I had the type of chemicals in my body that insects could smell and the Avon stuff did not cover it up.
Oh yeah one more thing that I have is a scented geranium, insects don't like the smell. I keep it on our patio.
Goodluck
Two things to try:
(1) Check your diet. Mosquitos LOVE certain foods, such as bananas - they increase your blood sugar or something. Obviously one can't go without fruit for an extended period, but do some research online - I do know that I got alot fewer bites once I eliminated bananas from my diet.
(2) Try rubbing your self down with a dryer sheet and then carrying it with you in a back pocket. This works for my father who has always had a terrible draw on mosquitos...
Other than that, sprays with high concentrations of DEET (also a known carcinogen) have been the only thing to Completely eliminate bites for me - and when I spray myself, I spray my clothes, my hair, everything but my face.
one more thing.....remember that they are attracted to blood and despite all measures one can take, they are even more attracted to women during 'that time of the month'.
GOOD LUCK!!!
Your mom was almost right. Buy a small bottle of Skin So Soft bath oil from Avon. Believe me the only thing I have ever found that works to keep mosquitos and any other creepy crawly off me. I don't know what is in it but they sure don't like it. It keeps your skin soft too for some reason,it really works. Try it and let me know. Thanks
Use dryer sheets...rub you and the kids down with them and put one in your back pocket (and the kids if they have pockets). Bounce or Downy both work very well.
My parents live by a creek and it's the only way I can keep mosiquitoes off me! The only thing that I have found works. DEET is harmful, deadly if ingested by little ones, and does have carcinogenic properties. My son is asthmatic and I refuse to use it on him. I don't need to with the dryer sheets!
Hi A.,
What about Skin So Soft oil from avon. I am from Fl and believe me it works.
Thanks
White vinegar! Bugs don't like the smell. I have been putting it on my daughter, who is 3, all summer and she has only been bitten twice. Of course those 2 times was when I forgot to put it on. Put the vinegar on a cottonball and dab it on your wrist, the in side of your elbows, the back of your knees and any other place you want. It should keep them away. Hope it works for you!!!
A. I feel your pain. There may be something you are eating that is causing them to attack you. I have heard that bananas, and fruit especially attrack them because of the sweet odor. They do not like garlic, so I don't know if you can stand it, but if you have a Cracker Barrel close they sell pickled garlic. It is either 1/4 to 1/2 cloves of garlic that have been cooked and pickled, and if you were to eat a couple every day, it might help deter them.
I have an excellent book (1001 All Natural Secrets to a Pest-Free Property). I've used it several times and it has worked every time. It says that anise oil (an oil extracted from anise seeds) works wonders to repel all bugs. You can buy the oil at a health-food store, then add a few drops to your laundry. You can also put it on your skin. It won't only repel mosquitoes, but flies, bees, pretty much anything. It is also something of a love potion for dogs. If a dog licks your hand and tastes the anise oil, they will be very friendly toward you, even if they were barking at first!
Good Luck!

I asked my pediatrician the same thing. She said you have to buy the ones with the Deet in them,,,and she said you can put in on your kids too...you just have to give them a GOOD bath after and really wash with a washcloth and good soap. It has helped us so much,,,hope it helps you too.
Mosquitos never bit me until I had my daughter and now they feast on me. The painful truth is that you will have to spray every inch of yourself, I use OFF, the scented kind and use the wipes on my hands, ears and in between my toes. I know that I have to take a shower after I use all of this bug spray but it's worth it to be outside with my daughter. I also spray my hair and clothes with the bug spray. It is extreme but they will eat me alive if I don't and I do not want to contract West Nile Virus. The OFF actually smells good so it' is more tolerable and you need to use citronella candles when you're outside too. You kind of have to build a mosquito fortress but to those of us that are so sweet, ha-ha, it is necessary. Good Luck!!
Try the Mosquito Cognito. It's about $30. I got it and works pretty good. Good luck!
I am allergic to mosquitos and I live in SC. I get one bite and lucky for me, my reaction hasn't gotten bad enough that I can't breath, but where they bite me swells so much that you'd think I'd scratched and scratched. A few times it has been bad enough that it looks like I've been beaten because where they bit me my skin had turned black and blue, like a huge bruise and bump. The bit area also gets feverish. I'd like to rip my skin off because it itches so bad. Anyway, what I do to keep from being bitten is I take garlic pills. They work great for me. Also, we just moved into a new house and when we were doing our landscaping the local nurseries told us to use Cedar mulch/chips because mosquitos don't like it. Well, I love the smell of cedar, so we used that around the front of the house and it works! I also keep some of that benedryl cream on me for those times I've forgotten to take a garlic pill and end up getting bit. It was also mentioned earlier about bananas. I rarely eat them because mosquitos seem to like you more when you eat those. I eat them in the winter while there aren't any mosquitos around, but during the season that they're here, I avoid them. I hope this helps.
I have been told to stick dryer sheets in your pockets or pin to your shirt or Avon's Skin so soft.
I know this may sound in sane but try it. Take a dryer sheet and rub your skin and clothes down with it, then take a fresh one and put it in your pockets. This is what I used when watching my boyfriend play softball. Also, most golfers use this remedy when playing golf. There is a device your can buy to put on your pants that makes a high pitch noise that will keep them off of you. It is small like a pager and is inexpensive. You might look on a golf store website to find them, if not Dick's sporting goods has them. Good luck!!!
