My husband and I have decided not the give the MMR shot to our sons. However, we would still like to immunize them by splitting up the shot. The practice that our kids go to do not split up the shot. Does anyone know of a pediatrician in the chicago area that does split up the shot? Does anyone know of any other way to go about doing this? P.S. We are not looking for an immunization debate. We just need help finding how to split up the shot. THANK YOU!

What can I do next?

Hi Michelle,

I asked my doctor the same question if we could split the MMR, he reassured me that it has no link to Autism, and that he himself gave it to his two daughters. However, he told me that if we went that route, he will have to prescribe me the vaccines, and I will have to buy them on my own. By the way insurance does not cover this procedure. I think I'm just going to delay it until our daughter is 2 years old.

Hi Michelle.
I agree with a PP. I heard that as of a few months ago, you can no longer split the MMR. We too are going to delay vaccinations, and originally I was going to wait until my little boy was 2 to give the MMR. That is what Dr. Sears is recommending now. However, now that it can't be split, I am going to wait until 3 or 4. A friend of mine told me that if they get it at 2, they have to have it again. But if you wait till 3 or 4, they only have to get it once. Good luck.

I thought that I heard somewhere that the MMR is no longer available to split. Not sure where I heard it though.

Many doctors will give the shot but not break them up. So what you may need to do is purchase the three vaccines separately and then find a doctor to administer them. My neighbor went this route for her child. It is tedious but can be done.

I totally agree with your concerns about autism. I've always thought that the problem was that many doctors were binding them with mercury. If the 3 shots arent bound with mercury you should be ok having your child get all 3 at once. Northwestern childrens practice (where my kids get all of their shots) do not use mercury. Maybe thats the question you should ask your doctor rather than splitting them up, what are they binding them together with.

I would look on Leslie's List www.leslieslist.com (I think that's the name) - I saw it on WGN News yesterday (the 24th on the noon broadcast). This list is a comparison shop for perscriptions and medical services/proceedures. I was amazed at the price diffs in the most common perscriptions and proceedures. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but plan to do so.

Hi Michelle,

My daughter received the MMR in 3 seperate shots this past year. We go to the Northwestern Children's Practice at 680 N. LSD. They do not have the vaccines there, but our Dr. wrote me a prescription to pick them up from Children's Memorial Hospital and would then administer the shot. If you need any additional information, I'd be happy to share it with you. Hopefully this will help!
