Has Anyone Heard About Splitting up the 12 Month MMR Vaccine?

My 12 month old daughter has an autistic cousin. I read somewhere that splitting up the MMR vaccine is easier on a child's system if they are prone to being autistic. (I want to make it clear that I am not against vaccines!!)

My pediatrician told me we could get the separate vaccines from the health department, but when we went there, they said the MMR vaccine is only a combo vaccine. Does anyone know anything about getting them separate? We were told we could do them 1 month apart, like starting with the measles vaccine, then a month later do the mumps, then the rubella.

I know most pediatricians don't believe vaccines and autism are related, but they also don't know what the cause for autism is. I definitely want my daughter protected from these diseases, but if there is a way to make it easier on her system by not combining them all in one day, I would LOVE to do it!
Thanks Moms!

Here's a previous post by Kelly that I saved in my files. I plan on doing this with my almost two year old. Good luck.

It is possible if you pedi will order if from American Medicine.

American Medicine

Bridgette: ###-###-####

Can get MMR separated from Merck

Steps:
Physician fax order for child
“separated MMR for Samantha”
with state license

Fax: ###-###-####

Ships to doctor’s office

Measles $31.64
Rubella $35.23
Mumps $40.90
All three: $113 roughly

You can even call Bridgette yourself to see exactly how the process works, but basically, you pay for the vaccines, the doctor orders them, and the vaccines are shipped to the doctor and administered there at the given time.

Also, you can file an exemption with the state as well...

Yes it is possible to get the MMR "cocktail" in separate shots. If your clinic doesn't offer it, I would call around to some others. It may just be that particular office only carries the combo cocktail.

I too am not opposed to vaccine. But just wanted to say with both my kids I split up all shots. I never allowed more than 2 shots at a time. So at certain appts when they were required 3 or more, I would pay the extra copay and would come a month later to 'catch up". I think its just too much of a vaccine in these kids when they get 3 or more shots at once. Plus, if they have a reaction you can have a better idea of which vaccine caused it. I do know splitting the MMR is possible because I have heard others do it, but am not sure how. Good question!

I know it can be split up, but some pedi's only order them as combos.

Go to www.dfwareamoms.com, register, and ask your question there. There are a LOT of moms on that board who delay vax or selectively vax and can give you a wealth of information.

Can you please give me the contact info for the post below? I am in the same situation as you, my son is 9 months old and I do not want him to have the MMR shot all together. I am not against vaccines either. Please help me so I can find out how to do this. I have called all over the state of Iowa and they do not give them separate.

you have the choice of putting it off for a year (maybe longer), that's what i did. the amount of mercury in the mmr shot given to a baby is i think i read enough for a 100 lb person (or something similar because i was shocked!) obviously my dd wasn't that big :) but i felt much better waiting a year. i did have to sign a form at the doctors for the state of tx saying i was deferring her shots. if your doctor pushes you to do it i'd switch doctors.
good luck.

You can split it up - the pharmacy that does this is www.hopewellrx.com. It's in New Jersey. They will mail it to you, but you need a prescription for the separate vaccines.
