I am Caucasian. I have very white skin and never tan. My husband is Indian (India) He is fairly light skinned. We have 3 children and they range in colors. However the two darker ones have a yellow cast to their skin. I am wondering if anyone else with the same mixture has this in there children's skin as well or should I mark it up to the large amounts of Turmeric that we use in cooking Indian foods. its not liver related at all I have ruled this out with the Pediatrician. Just for Information sake. My oldest is quite tan, with Dark Brown/Auburn hair, brown eyes and a yellowish cast. My second is whiter than me, with Alabaster tone, and white/golden hair, and very blue eyes no yellow tone except her nose and her knees have it. My son is darker brown very tan, he has black hair and black eyes. He also has a yellowish cast.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I love this, every site including this one, someone always jumps to a conclusion that is so far from the question asked. I was not making this a race or skin color issue. I merely wanted to know if my children' yellow cast could be from a food related Spice. I am not ignorant to skin color and tones such as mediteranian or olive. There whole body doesnt have all they yellow it seems concentrated in there joints and faces. However now that I see many responses say it normal I am grateful. I am not grateful for those people who think I need to read a book on how better to acknowledge or accept my childrens skin tones. I dont need to broaden my mind to these things, its already broadened enough. If I asked something along the lines of WHY are my kids yellow, and I was completely ignorant of there mixed heritage, then that answer would be totally acceptable. I asked could some of the yellow be from a spice I used in cooking just like BETA CAROTENE causes orange. @Thea: my children are not African American Mixed. So this book would not apply and its not acceptable to ask me to embrace something that is already embraced in my mixed home. If its any consolation to you, my sister is married to an African man from Uganda and there children are mixed, my very close cousin is also married 17 years to a African American man and have 6 mixed race children, I am well exposed to the mixed race. Thanks.

People with Asian ancestery can and usually do have yellow undertones. This is not unusual. If you have the benefit of meeting a wider cross section of people from this part of the world, you would see yellow skin undertones are not unusual among people from places like Persia, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and so on... They (we) do not all have very dark skin, nor do they all have "tan" skin.

I have Filipino ancestry and family members range from very dark brown to high yellow in skin tone. Pretty common.

If that were the case wouldn't you ALL be yellow?

What you are describing doesn't sound particularly unusual as a skin tone... I mean are you saying they are the actual crayon box color yellow, or that they are tan with yellow (instead of pink or olive) undertones?

There is a great book for African American children called "Shades of Black" about all the wonderful skin colors and hair textures that are "black." Sounds like you would do well to embrace a similar spectrum in your personal conceptions of skin color.

My kids are a mix of my European cocktail and my husband's Iraqi blood. They are all different hues, but I really doubt it has any relation to food. Just different phenotypes coming through.

It could be from someone else in the family. For example I have blonde hair and both my parents have dark brown hair, but I have an aunt, and a grandfather with blonde hair

I doubt it is the Tumeric. At one point I was taking 9 capsules a day to increase breastmilk but I never turned yellow. But I'm glad you checked out the liver possibility.

My cousin is half Indian and half Polish which is an interesting mix. She got her mom's Indian skin tone (but a bit lighter) and black/dark brown eye hair and eye color. Her dad has blue eyes and light brown hair so her kids may some interesting recessives. But her features are a mix of both parents and her hair texture is fine and silky like the Polish side. You just never know what you will get. My kids are also a blend of both sides of the family but not the same blend.

Thats a very interesting question, My husband will turn orange from drinking carrot juice so i know there is at least one food that will do it. However, turmeric is what makes mustard yellow so you figure it would be present in some fast food lovers too. My brother and his wife are hare krishnas which is a sect of Hindu, which is Indian. They eat at their temple all the time and everything has turmeric in it. Ive never really noticed them being yellow.

I have a yellowish cast to my skin though, i think its called "olive", i am pale but i tan well. I think my olive tint comes from my native american heritage.

I don't know about turmeric, but my nieces turned yellow/orange when my well-intentioned SIL fed them large amounts of pumpkin!

I'm thinking undertones too, my sister and I are obviously the exact same mix, and I have very yellow undertones, while hers are more pink.

People have 3 kind of undertones to their skin regardless of race/ethnicity. There is pink/blue (cool), yellow/red (warm) and neutral. I'm a pink tone, husband is warm tone... 1st born is neutral and 2nd seems to be a cool like me.
