Missing Teeth - Umatilla,OR

This isn't an urgent question, just curious of others experiences. My 11 mo. old daugther (our second child) still has yet to sprout even one tooth. She hasn't even shown any signs...no drooling, no massive chewing, no fevers and she's not a cranky kid. The Dr. says it's not abnormal and they will come when they want to, but I am curious how many others out there have experienced this and how long it really took for your babies to get their teeth. She eats very well and having only gums hasn't seemed to stop her much at all so I'm not worried about her, just perplexed since my son had nearly a full head of them by this age.

What can I do next?

My son, who is my first, starting getting teeth at 6 mos. But both of my daughters didn't get any until they were 13 months old. My youngest is 2 1/2 and if finally just starting to get her "fang" teeth in. Sorry, I can't remember the correct name. :)

I didn't get my first tooth until I was 13 months old. The denist told my mom that this was a good thing...late teethers usually have fewer cavities than early teethers. True to form, I've had very few cavities so far in my 39 years. The downside? I was still losing my baby teeth in college!

Hi K.,
My older daughter got her first tooth at 11 months. She was walking at 10 months, I thought it was so cute because she looked like such a baby still without teeth. She began losing her teeth late too, everyone else seemed to lose a first tooth in kindergarten or first grade. She lost her first tooth in second grade and no big deal was made like it was for younger kids. She's always had good healthy teeth.
My younger daughter was 16 months old when her first tooth appeared. Her teeth didn't come in in the usual order. She lost a tooth at only 24 months due to injury. She's 2 1/2 now and has no other problems.
My son got his first tooth at 7 1/2 months. He's 10 1/2 months old now and just broke through his 4th tooth on Mother's Day. His teeth are coming in in a pattern of his own too.
Our pediatrician said that the first tooth can appear anytime in the first two years. The latest first tooth he's seen was at 22 months.
Best wishes, K.

The later teeth can be a genetic thing. My husbands family all teethed later. They didn't start getting teeth until about 14 months.

You might ask your respective moms when you and baby's dad got teeth and this might give you a better idea as to when they might come in.

My third got his two bottom teeth at 8 months, but didn't get any more until he was 15 months. I took him in to the dentist for his 1 year exam, and he said the longer they take the better. So enjoy not having to brush them!

My oldest, now 20 and with all her teeth (except she now needs her wisdom teeth pulled!), never got her first tooth until she was 14 months old. She was well into wanting and needing solid foods at that point, though I still breastfed her. She simply gummed everything--could eat anything, as long as it was relatively soft or cooked, but meat, which really requires teeth. We started to wonder if we had just watched the latest evolution into vegetarianism!

I understand your concern. My daughter only had 2 teeth at 11 months old (my other 3 had a full mouth at this point). I also know someone that didnt cut teeth till she was almost 2. Our pediatrician told us that as long as she has her teeth by age 2, there really isnt much to be concerned about, they will come in time and whatever order. I honestly dont know why this happens. My daughter is now almost 3 and has a full mouth of healthy chompers.

My daughter didn't get her first tooth until a few weeks before her first birthday. To make it even weirder...her top teeth came in before her bottom. However, once they started it was one right after another and she had her full set just a few months after her second birthday.

My niece was TWO before the first tooth showed up...and their pediatrician wasn't going to be worried unless she didn't have one by then.

I was late getting my teeth (and have never had a cavity). I find it commonly agreed that late teethers generally have better overall dental health--mothers, dentists, pediatrician. Of course, nothing replaces good hygiene but always good to have an ace in the hole!

My older son (12) got his first tooth around 9 or 10 months. He has been "behind" on losing them all along and his permanent teeth are coming in later too. There is an old wives tale that the later they come in the longer they will have teeth (no dentures). The only time it bothered him was he didn't lose his first tooth until right before 2nd grade and every one else had lost them sooner. I had worried when he was a baby that they weren't coming in "soon enough". The doctor said teeth come in when they want and not to worry.

My first got teeth at 9 months, the second at 12 months and the third got teeth at 11 months. The second child is now close to 7 and her bottom teeth are just wiggley. They are just late teethers I guess. :)

One of my nieces sprouted he first teeth after her first birthday. She is now 10 and in the process of growing in her front adult teeth.
The only thing they did, was make sure at some point (I think around age 8) that she had adult teeth under her baby teeth. Other than that it's just wait and see - nothing that can be done about it anyways...

My first baby didn't even start to show signs of teething until 1 year old. She managed to eat everything without them anyway.
My son began teething much earlier.
You'll go through the joys of teething soon enough!
I'm sure she's fine!

My daughter got her first tooth at 11 months. She's now 2 and has just one more of her first teeth to go. She has never been droolly, chewed or had fevers. It's usually a complete surprise when I see that a new tooth has come in, since she never seems to notice herself.
I wouldn't worry. They will come eventually. I considered it a huge blessing since I breast fed her until 13 months. :)

You are not alone. Both of my children were late to get teeth in. One was walking before her first tooth broke through. My first child didn't have a tooth until almost 11 months & the second one was 11 1/2 months. After the first tooth broke, the rest of the teeth seemed to come in pretty quickly. One of my girls had two teeth erupt within hours of each other. I am hoping the old adage about children who teeth late having stronger teeth through life is true. So far, it has been. My oldest is 5 and there are no signs of any of her teeth loosening up just yet either.

My best friend's baby just got his first two in Jan at a year old.
I have heard the earlier the onset of teeth the earloer the onset of puberty, but I think thats an old wives tale. But if it does coem true then you're one of the lucky ones. Both my girls were 12 and they got teeth at 4 months.

My daughter is also 11 months old and doesn't have any teeth either. I've heard it's not that uncommon and definitely nothing to worry about.

My kids got their teeth late. My sister-in-law warned me ahead of time that it's a family thing. My oldest had her first tooth break through the gum on her first birthday. My youngest is almost 14 y.o. and has not lost all of his baby teeth yet. So your daughter's permanent teeth may come in late, too.
