I highly recommend seeing the dr to avoid complications later on.

I required a D & C after my miscarriage.

It depends.

Sometimes, nothing more than a 'long' period. No worries, you're totally fine.

Other times you die.

Quite often not all of the placenta detaches, and MASSIVE infections OR hemorrhaging happens. So either the infection kills you in a day or a week (depending on whether it gets into your blood, or moves more slowly throughout your organs shutting them down one by one), or you bleed out in a few minutes to a few hours.

(I know... cheery, right? To make up a number... I'm too tired to look up OB surgical stats right now... ABOUT 1:5 women need to have a D&C to prevent the whole massive infection or bleeding out / death thing)

You should at least go in and have blood work done to make sure your numbers are going down. I had an incomplete miscarriage and 3 weeks after it had to have a d&c because I was still pregnant with a blighted ovum.

So sorry M. B! I had four miscarriages and did not see the doctor for two of the early ones. I did talk to my OBGYN, but there was not much to be done. I had complications with a later one that required attention. I would suggest calling your doctor if you have one. If your body has expelled everything and it was early on, there is not much they can do. If you are in pain call the doctor, if you are bleeding too much call or just call and have a professional reassure you. Hugs...

I really don't know but on a general knowledge basis I do know that at about 3 months along they usually perform a DNC. Anything before then my guess is you lose blood and your body absorbs the rest? Just guessing here though...

my sister had a miscarriage at about 8 weeks. she lived in a rural town so the doctor she called just told her to take care of herself-- that there was not much to be done. the next month she conceived twins naturally.
take care of yourself.
all the best,
L.

I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks (baby was only 7-8 weeks in size though, hence the miscarriage) and aside from the pain meds my OB called in, my OB didn't need to see me at all. The next few days I had bleeding like a light period and that was it. The upside (not that there is ever an upside to something that hard) is you don't have to wait months to try again like when you have a DNC. I actually got pregnant just 2 weeks later (CRAZY) and had a healthy baby boy. I wish you the best and take care of yourself, at home or in the hospital, it is a difficult loss.

I'm sorry for your loss.

It all depends upon how far along you were. In the first trimester? Your body will clean itself out naturally. It can take time.

Second and later? Go to the doctor. I personally would go to the doctor no matter how far along I was....its always best to be checked out.

It depends. If it was very early on, for example you got a positive test before your period was due and then get your period, you are not bleeding too heavily (if you soak a pad in an hour or less you need to go to the hospital) and have no other worrisome symptoms (extended bleeding, unusual or heavy cramping, fever) you probably don't have to see a doctor (I would not).

Any farther along, even in the first trimester I would probably go in and get an ultrasound to make sure a. that I actually really had a miscarriage (sometimes you get a bunch of bleeding but still have an intact pregancy) and b. that there is no retained tissue. This would not be an emergency though and I would make an appointment for it instead of going to the ER.

If you keep bleeding or spotting for anything longer than a normal period, have a fever, cramps, your period doesn't return the next month... then you do want to see your doctor. Same goes for miscarriages further along than 9 or ten weeks.

I went to the doctor for two of mine and not for the other two. The two I did not go for were VERY early losses and the two I did go for were for 9 weeks and for 10 weeks. For me the early losses were not very different physically (very different emotionally) than my period. The farther along you are (IMO) the more important it is to see a doctor, because you have to know that it all came out and checking your levels or ultrasound can be helpful.
I am sorry that you are dealing with this. I know how rough it is. My thoughts are with you.

It's always best to go just to be sure the levels go down. My last OB told me that any remaining hcg is cancer causing, she monitered my levels until they were down to zero.

If it's early on and you bleed I think it's fine. I went through that and never went to the doctor. If it's past 12 or 13 weeks miscarriages are more rare, so I'd want to go to the doctor to find out what happened. Or if you miscarry without bleeding you'll need to go to the doctor to help expel the fetus.

I'm sorry for your loss!

Unfortunately, I'm somewhat experienced with miscarriages. It would be best if after a week or so you went for some bloodwork to make sure your hormone levels are back to normal. I'm assuming you're already bleeding on your own, and it's manageable. If you start soaking pads in 20 minutes, definitely go in. That did happen to me once, and it was quite scary, but my OB had me come right into the office and took care of it. Another one never bled even with medication to help it and I had to have a D&C. They did blood work and ultrasounds with that last one to know that I needed the D&C. I never had a physical exam with any of mine, just bloodwork and sometimes ultrasound.

I would call your doctor's office and see what they suggest. Tell them you'd rather not go in and ask them in what cases you would need to go in. A micarriage is something you should at least have noted in your file. Don't let those people saying you'll die if you don't go in scare you. Hang in there, M..

You should go to the dr. If the miscarriage is incomplete, you may need a D&C, even in the first trimester. I needed a D&C after my miscarriage at around 8 weeks.

as long as your body expelled everything, you should be fine. given that this is a 1st trimester miscarriage. if you start cramping and running a fever, get to the ER ASAP!

have had 3 miscarriages myself.
