i just recently miscarried and my doctor said next time i find out i am pregnant i am to call her right away and she will provide me with progesterone supplements to help prevent future miscarriages. any thoughts or feedback on this? is it safe for me? the baby?
I am sorry you are going through this loss. I have two friends who had the same issue I think you are talking about. They would miscarry unless they had progesterone suppositories for their first trimester(s). Both had full term pregnancies once they got the progesterone. I certainly wish the same for you. Hi L.,
Sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage in February 2007 (I already have 2 healthy children). The cells just never developed in to a baby. My Doctor said if we wanted to try again wait a couple of months, but since it was my 1st miscarriage I should not have a problem. Well by Christmas we were pregnant, and without any supplements, welcomed a healthy baby boy on August 1. I would ask more questions of your OB, each case is different. Good Luck.

Hi L.. I was supplemented with progesterone after my miscarriage and went on to carry two healthy baby boys the next time around. It is just a precaution just in case your body isnt making enough. At about 10 to 12 weeks they baby will make his/her own and you wont need to worry about it. It wont hurt you and it wont hurt your baby. The only thing is - when the baby starts making enough you might get constipated...get some pericolace if that happens. Its safe and very gentle. Good Luck the second time around...I know how hard it is to lose one...I still cry every once in awhile over my baby that never made it.

My girlfriend, my cousin and I all had miscarriages the first time and we all went on progesterone. We were fine and the babies were fine. My cousin's "baby" is 7, mine is 6 and my girlfriend is due in November. So definitely do it. I'm pretty sure my cousin only had to do it for the first baby and she was fine for the next 2.

I have been through this several times and have the same problems. Not to worry, the supplements are completely safe. They don't affect the baby at all. It just ensures that your progesterone levels are high enough to sustain the pregnancy and you don't have to take them past the first trimester. Good luck and don't worry!

Hi L.-
I'm sorry about your miscarriage. I had 3 miscarriages before my daughter, and then one before my son. They did tons of tests, some not pleasant, and for my son's pregnancy prescribed vaginal Progesterine suppositories, twice a day for 19 weeks. They were yucky but I have a healthy 9 year old son to show for it. I had done research and found that they were healthy for me and my baby.

I had a total of 4 miscarriages. After the 4th miscarriage (I had two miscarriages and then I had my daugther and then I had two more miscarriages and then I had my son)I asked my obgyn to send me to a specialist. After certain tests, the only thing that the specialist determined is that I had a fibroid that may be interfering with the implanting of the egg. He put me on progesterone supplements (I put this pill under my tongue and it dissolved). Once I became pregnant again, I contacted him immediately and they did some blood work and the dr. put me on estrogen pills because he felt that my estrogen levels were low. For the first 13 weeks of my pregnancy I was on progesterone supplements, baby aspirin and estrogen pills. My son will be five in December!!
Make sure you have them do extensive blood work and check your estrogen level. Some times thats all that it takes.
Good luck!

Ditto. Miscarriage is not just due to low progesterone. It is often because the embryo simply is not viable or developing normally...it's nature.
Aside from that.... my OB/GYN said to wait 6 months after a miscarriage, to try and get pregnant again. That is what he told me, after I had a miscarriage. I have since had my son after that 1 miscarriage.
Also, each pregnancy is different and has to be monitored. I would think, that just giving progesterone across the board without checking your blood-work or other exams, would be....presumptuous to say the least? But I don't know, I'm not a doctor.
I am sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Hopefully you will be pregnant again soon! Progesterone supplements are a way to give your body extra of what it already produces. I was given them when I finally got pregnant the first time (difficulty conceiving and my doc wanted to be sure the pregnancy stuck!) and my son is now 4 yrs old, healthy and "normal". I think these supplements are pretty standard procedure, especially if you have had a miscarriage already.
Good luck!

I'm so sorry about your loss. I went through two miscarriages in January '07 and April '07 so I understand all the different fears/sadnesses you are feeling). My first OB ran some blood clotting tests, said that all was fine and then told me she'd put me on progesterone when I got pregnant again. She skipped the progesterone test for some reason. Something didn't feel right about it to me (mostly the doctor was cold and unfeeling about it all), but I switched doctors and shared my concerns and wishes not to have to go through another loss.. He ran more extensive tests to find that I did have a clotting issue (not as common as low progesterone but really good to find this out as these things can cause issues later in pregnancy).
They never checked my progesterone, but the next time we tried to get pregnant, he put me on progesterone (crinone gel - I'd recommend this one if you go ahead with it) - he had me start this from a couple days after we thought conception happened- as well as a blood thinner once we found out.
And, as I type this, my healthy, lively five-month-old daughter is sitting on my lap.
I have several doctors in my family, and after much research they all found crinone to be perfectly safe for both baby and mommy.
So, I guess what I'm saying, is listen to your doctor if you feel you trust him/her and listen to yourself as far as the rest.
I wish you all the best..

My good friend is pregnant for the 8th time . . . but she only has 2 other kids. She fully thanks progesterone supplements for her two beautiful kids. They figured it out with her firstborn, who was her third pregnancy. She had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and was told to expect a miscarriage as things weren't looking good. She begged the dr. to do ANYTHING, and he, more to placate her than anything, told her that her progesterone levels had been bit low and they could TRY supplements. An ultrasound a week later showed a thriving pregnancy. Her son turns 4 in February. She had a different dr. the next time who refused to do progesterone and lost that one. The next time, she refused to leave the drs. office till they gave it to her. Her daughter turns 2 in October. She is now 15 weeks with her 3rd. Truthfully, there is no statistics that show that it helps, but it also doesn't hurt anything to try. My dr. is all for it, but thankfully in my case I didn't need it. Best of luck, and I would so do it.

Hi L.,
I'm so sorry about what you're going through.
I was put on progesterone by my Homeopathic doctor when I was pregnant. I have a blood clotting disorder that may cause miscarriages and other problems. Woman do get this blood clotting disorder while pregnant, it's a protein S deficiency. You may want to ask your OB to have you checked for it. For some reason they do not check for this disorder unless you've previously had a clot.
I now have a very healthy 8 1/2 month old daughter.

I feel your pain for your loss. I went through that just recently too (in May). I have had 2 miscarriages. One before our 2 yr. old daughter and the one I am telling you about now. I just found out I am pregnant again and I had to ask to have my progesterone levels checked...I would ask to have blood work first. I've never had my progesterone checked with the other 2 pregnancies that I lost. Now I am not sure why? Sometimes you have to be proactive with your OB/GYN.
My recent miscarriage my hormone levels (did not have progesterone tested) were VERY high, but no viable pregnancy. I am scared to have my first appointment, but all I can do is pray and wait.

Yes, it's common. Can she allow you to take them before you get pregnant so it's in your system from conception on? Just a thought. Also, make sure you're taking prenatal vitamins from before conception and on so you have enough folic acid in your system. Don't drink coffee while you're trying to conceive, it's linked to miscarriages. Good luck. I've had two miscarriages but went on to have a total of 3 children and 1 on the way.

My OB did tell me to wait a couple of months before we started trying again. I was waiting for my period so I could get on birth control but it never came (she did say it would be a month or so before I got it again) then in Sept I found out I was expecting..which was hard because I didn't want the same thing to happen. I called her and was seen pretty quick. Hello, L.,
Were you going through any major stress(es) near your miscarriage? If so, look into some yoga classes or something you might enjoy that would be relaxing and healing for you.
In addition to the above, you can balance out your hormonal levels further by taking in more simple, living foods. I would be happy to email you "88 Recipes That Heal", if you let me know that you would like them emailed to you.
Give that lovely little soul that moved on for now a "thank you" message. Then get your body ready for his or her possible future journey with you.
Yes, I would get a second opinion as well, with a more holistic-minded doctor. I think your instincts to question this one are right on.

I think it's a recent, more proactive treatment doctors are doing. I did the progesterone supplements too as soon as I found out I was pregnant with my now 1yo girl. (I miscarried 2 months before. In addition, I had 2 miscarriages before my 4yo son, which is when I switched doctors.) Thankfully, she is healthy and I am too.
When I did it, I researched it online and found that progesterone supplementation is not recommended before you are pregnant, that it may actually make it harder to conceive. However, once you are pregnant, it helps sustain the early stages of pregnancy.
Good luck!

I was put on the progesterone suppositories for my first pregnancy 2 years ago and also for my current one. I am due to give birth to a boy in 1 week and have a happy healthy 21 month old girl. So, it definetly worked for me. I was put on it because my HCG levels started off EXTREMELY low and were very slow to rise. I was at great risk for miscarrage. Your ovaries support the pregnancy with progesterone until the second trimester, when the placenta takes over. Sometimes the ovaries (specifically the follacle the egg came out of) fail too early, and the loss of progesterone causes you to lose an otherwise healthy pregnancy. Studies are controvercial on the effectiveness of the supplementation, but both my doctors felt they had seen positive results in their patients, so why not try. I know another mom who lost four pregnancies until her doc tried this and it worked for her twice. So talk it over with your doc and give it a try if you feel comfortable. BTW: The hormone will not save an unhealthy embryo (chromosomal problems etc). It only helps if the problem is your ovaries.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is a very difficult thing to miscarry. Perhaps your doctor has a reason for this suggestion. I miscarried my third pregnancy. Since I did not have a D&C, my doctor told me I could start trying again the next month. We found out we were pregnant again the week that baby was due! I had bleeding early on in my subsequent pregnancy. The doctor put me on progesterone pills, telling me that they might not help, but they wouldn't hurt. (My daughter is now almost 8 and perfectly healthy.)Progesterone helps during the first trimester before the placenta is formed enough to take over. If your doctor told you to call, call. Hope this helps ease your mind.

I know you have received a lot of responses already..but I feel so strongly in favor of progesterone that I have to respond too
First, I am so sorry for your loss.
I had three pregnancies within a 10 month period. My first loss was a blighted ovum, the second loss occurred in the 10th week, but my third pregnancy resulted in my now 18 month old daughter. After the second loss my doctor also told me to call as soon as I received a positive pregnancy test, and I was immediatley placed on progesterone three times a day until the 12th week I think (as that is when the placenta starts to produce it naturally for the baby, if I remember correctly). My doctor assured me that there were no negative side effects either for me or the baby, and there was no such thing as having too much, but definately a problem if there was too little.
So, as soon as you get that positive pregnancy sign, call your doctor and start the progesterone

Hi L.,
This is very tough. I know, I've been through it 4 times now. The progesterone is very safe for you and for the baby. Your Dr. is assuming that you miscarried due to low progesterone and wants to give you a boost next time to help get the #s up early to try to prevent another miscarriage.
Now, there is a down side. The progesterone can cause you to "keep" a pregnancy that would other wise miscarry due to genetic or developmental issues. I have read on other people'
s posts that "This can not happen." I am proof that it can. I was the patient of a premier fertility Dr. at the time and he assures me that I ran into this in one of my pregnancies. I went to 12 weeks with a pregnancy that needed to (and would have)miscarry itself earlier but I was taking progesterone which caused my body to stay pregnant with a pregnancy that wasn't viable. It was hard to have that hope of a normal pregnancy to then be told it wasn't viable. That might have been harder than the first miscarriage that came out of the blue.
At the end of it, it's you and your Dr.s call. I think it usually does more good than harm but there is that possibility.
Good Luck, God Bless and it will get easier.

I went through the same thing back in Dec 2005- I had a miscarriage and now we believe it was due to low progesterone levels in me. The pain was almost unbearable- but thankfully, I did become pregnant again in about 31/2 months and they ended up putting me on progesterone supplements. It was a life saver, literally. Our bodies normally produce it at increasing levels as the pregnancy progresses, but for me, it was declining at an alarming rate after each blood test to read where I was at , so the decision was made for the progesterone. My daughter, Gia, is 100% normal, happy, on time with all of her development etc. So don't be afraid of it, I will tell you, it makes you very drowsy, that is why you can only take it in the evenings.
Blessings to you,

Hello L.,
I am sorry about your miscarriage. I know it feels really bad especially if it is your first pregnancy. I had two early miscarriages before my son who is now 5yrs old and two miscarriages before my 2yr old daughter. I too was put on progesterone as soon as I was pregnant. I had absolutely no problems with the progesterone and neither did the kids. Do not be discouraged, keep trying especially as soon as the doctor gives the ok. I had no problems getting pregnant, but my body did not produce enough progesterone to sustain the pregnancies the first three months. Once the placenta took over after the 1st trimester, the pregnancy was well under way.
I felt really sad at the thought that I might not be able to carry a baby, but I just kept trying. I must say, I felt pretty helpless because one day I was pregnant with breast feeling sore and also feeling blotted, to all of a sudden feeling the cramping and knowing it was not going to happen for us that time. The next day it felt as if something just washed over my body and there was nothing there. The worst was knowing that even if I did not move from bed it was not going to stop. But let me tell you that things will be all right and you will probably end up with a beautiful baby sooner than later. my advise is to take the hormones as soon as you know you are pregnant. Keep trying asap because your body is in baby mode and can probably get pregnant rather quickly. Good Luck!!!

I'm sorry for your loss. I have three beautiful boys now (5, 3 and 9 mos.), but suffered 2 miscarriages along the way. The first one was with my first pregnancy, and my doctor prescribed the progesterone suppositories for my next pregnancy, which resulted in a very healthy baby boy (9lbs 11 oz!). My understanding at the time was that it was just an extra measure that basically "couldn't hurt" and might help, if in fact the miscarriage had been related to a lack of hormones in some way. Like the majority of miscarriages, mine had no obvious reason. I had no side effects, other than a slightly strange odor to my urine. I only took it through the first trimester, stopping in my 13th week.
The next time I was pregnant, I didn't take anything and ended up having a great pregnancy and another healthy baby.
With the fourth pregnancy, I unfortunately had another miscarriage for no apparent reason. When I became pregnant again 3 months later, we decided not to take anything and I ended up having another big healthy boy.
So, in my experience, it certainly didn't hurt. It gave me little peace of mind at the time, feeling like we were doing something that might help the chances of a healthy baby.
Best of luck to you!
