I just took an at home pregnancy test 2 weeks ago and it came out positive. The following week I had what I would have thought was a regular period. I went in and had a blood draw on friday 643, another on Monday 580, and an ultra sound on tuesday, showing no ectopic pregnancy. The Dr called and said that she was concerned that my levels weren't dropping fast enough which makes her want me to come in for another blood draw today. Has anyone's levels ever when slightly down then rose again? I did read somewhere where levels had dropped only to raise again and the possibility of having a multiple pregnancy and losing one of them. Has anyone ever heard of anything like that?
Thank you everyone for the great advice. I went in and had another blood test done and my levels were still dropping, but very slowly, now only down to 540 from 580 and 643 the previous. The Dr gave me some options and I ended up getting the methotrexate shot. It seemed like the least invasive way to protect my reproductive organs and avoid surgery. Since my levels continued to decrease the pregnancy was not viable therefore the shot dissolves the fertilized egg and allows your body to reabsorb it. I have read that it's very important to use contraception for at least 3 months. I had kind of planned on just seeing what happened in terms of getting pregnant agian, but this drug in the same one used for chemo treatment on cancer patients only in a much lower dose and in your muscle instead of your vein, so I'd like my body to fully clear itself of the drug before I get pregnant again. Did the ultrasound show that you were pregnant? My two older sisters concieved twins and early in the pregnancy each lost one. It also could be what they call a "chemical pregnancy".
Yes that definitely happens. Be patient and give your body time, unless there is an urgent medical need to do something. In time a vaginal ultrasound may explain what is going on. Or your levels will drop to zero and you can start again.

You probably didn't miscarry at all, you probably had what is know as breakthrough bleeding. It looks like a normal/light period but is not. Actually quite a bit of women have it. Remember all your dates from your last period because if you are pregnant those are the dates you should refer to.
I did have a miscarriage like this and the numbers went up then down...then wouldn't go down to normal. They kept testing the blood and decided that they had to give me a shot to get the numbers down. I can't remember what it was but I couldn't try to get pregnant for another three months. It is important to keep getting the blood tests to find out whats going on because if it doesn't clear up completly...you can get a serious infection. That's why the doctor wants to keep monitoring it closely. Hope that helps.
I am not sure about all the levels part, but I was 6 weeks along pregnant and had twins... lost one. I was walking the mall and started to bleed. I was rushed to the hospital and we took an ultra sound. It was really interesting... because you could see one baby sac being washed away and then another sac, which they weren't sure I would keep, but I did. I had a rough pregnancy. Something left over from that baby I lost, grew inside me with my daughter. But no worries, all was well and the birth went fine.
I hope if you want to be pregnant that you are. I am sure once they get another blood test, they might do another ultra sound and see if you are. Good luck. Don't be too worried, sometimes our hormones are just way out of wack after a miscarriage and I am sure its nothing serious. GOOD LUCK!
I have never heard of it rising again. I suffered 6 miscarriages, but I do have 3 beautiful children. I remember one time I had a home pregnancy test that was positive, but my blood test was "borderline" pregnant. The doctor threw me for a loop when he said it could be I was pregnant and losing it, maybe I wasn't pregnant when I did the home test and was now just barely pregnant, or maybe not pregnant at all! What was I supposed to think. I thought I'd lose my mind. When they did your ultrasound, it may have been too early to see the embryo and heartbeat. With my problems, they would usually see the sac, but no embryo. It hadn't formed. I was fortunate with all of my miscarriages that I was only 8-10 weeks along when it happened. I wish the best of luck to you. It is really an emotional roller coaster, and I understand totally what you must be going through.
I have been told that all women get pregnant and never know it because the body rejects it. For ex. if i got pregnant tonight and didn't know and then have my period in a week or so its like my body wasn't ready and i dont have the pain of a miscarriage that women further along do. That makes total sence tome becase I have had periods that have been much thicker than normal. (not heavier THICKER...as nasty as that may sound) Just keep going to the Dr and hopefully they figure things out!
Hello ..... I am a midwife and here is an answer. Yes, though it only happens rarely, you can miscarry a twin and continue to carry the other. First trimester bleeding is also common. Did you have painless bleeding, how long did it last, did your provider do a speculum exam? If your levels are not dropping, the standard of care is to keep drawing serial Hcg's (which can be expensive) and do a vaginal US to check for a live gestation, a demise, an ectopic (they can be anywhere and are dangerous) or a molar pregnancy. It is important to go back in and determine what is happening with your body. If it is a loss, remember that 90% of 1st trimester losses are due to chromosomal abnormalities, and not something the mother did or did not do. Hope this helps!

I had a long drawn out miscarrage back in '97 and it took 3 months. 2 yrs later I was blessed with my first of 3 beautiful boys. Ask many questions but also listen to your heart and you'll see you are already on the right path....

I'm sorry about your miscarriage. I had the same thing happen about three years ago and had Methotrexate also.
We had trouble conceiving, so I was excited to hear how fertile women are after miscarrying. We conceived again in 2.5 months, the first time we tried! It was amazing to us. The doctor (we went to Colo Ctr for Reproductive Medicine) told us to wait 2 months after Methotrexate was given.
One crazy thing that happened was that a lot of my hair fell out after the miscarriage. Even though I hadn't been pregnant long, I still had a hormone crash. It was sad, but we did go on to have a healthy pregnancy, and our son is almost 2 now.

I know exactly what your going through, I had a miscarriage a year ago, and my doctor too just kept checking my levels because they were going down really slowly, so I was hoping and praying that it wasn't a miscarriage, but it was and sometimes some peoples levels just go down slower than others. Just hang in there, and remember there is a reason this is happening and it's nothing you did wrong.
I have heard that can happen with a multiple pregnancy. Did the doctor see a developing pregnancy? It sounds like maybe she didn't that she thinks your numbers should be dropping faster. I hope everything turns out okay. I've lost 4 babies and it's not easy. Let me know if you want to talk. We are now expecting our 3rd, so don't get discouraged even though this may be a hard time.
My first pregnancy was an ectopic. I didn't even know I was pregnant, but I was having spotting and severe cramping. The nurse suggested I take a test and it was positive. Eventually they determined it was an ectopic pregnancy and they had to terminate it. The doctor used a drug called methatraxate (also used in chemotherapy), but after regular blood draws but hormone levels were not dropping fast enough. I had to have a second shot to terminate the pregnancy or risk rupturing a fallopian tube.
The second shot worked and there was no damage to any of my tubes.
My levels didn't go up, but they didn't go down either.
