Mirena - Perforated Uterus from Insertion

I just wanted to know if anyone else had a problem with the actual insertion of the Mirena. The doctor actually used too much forced and inserted the Mirena past my uterus. I was so uncomfortable and in so much pain during and after the insertion, but all the nurse said was it is bad cramping. After not being able to sit, roll over in bed or play with my daughter without sharp pains for a week. I finally tried to have it removed, but they couldn't find it...after several ultrasounds and a cat scan they finally found it up by my belly button. I had it surgically removed that night. Has anyone else had any problems like this? What has your doctor said?
Thanks,

What can I do next?

I don't have an IUD, so I have no experience with this, but if I were you, I'd find a new doctor ASAP. There's no excuse for something like that happening. I hope you are feeling well now. :)

I had the same problem with a perforated Mirena after having it for 7 months. I had it laparoscopically removed. I am in the unique position because I also insert Mirenas as part of my profession. It is a known risk and can even occur in the most competent of hands (so a lawsuit would have no merit, since negligence did not occur). The risk is 1/1000. Despite my experience, I still feel it is a good form of birth control and recommend it to my patients (although I do tell them my own story, I have a beautiful second daughter as the result of it).
It makes me sad to see so many suggestions that you should sue your doctor. No wonder malpractice insurance is so high, and so many good doctors are leaving the profession. I hope people realize that this is what contributes to the increasing cost of healthcare and the thousands of uninsured...:(

Almost the same exact thing happened to me, except that it was over all the way on the left side. A quick laproscopy fixed it, I figured after that I should just stick to pills. I tell all of my girlfriends now about it when they suggest having it done. It was awful.

I just talked to my dr about this yesterday. The dr who inserts it is supposed to measure you first and then insert. I have the Mirena (for almost 2 years) and I love it... go to someone you trust and know has done this many times if you get it.

That sounds like an awful experience. I would not want to go back for any further procedures and I would make my husband/partner go get a vasectomy. You've been through enough.

Hi J.-

So sorry this happened to you. I have an excellent OB and had it Mirena inserted after my 3rd child and LOVE it. I love that I barely have a period, I love that I don't have to think about the pill, and I love the fact that if we decide to have #4 we can take it out.
I hope you have recieved the medical care to have a complete recovery, and that you can find a new OB that you trust. Ask your girl friends I am sure they will point you to someone you can have confidence in.
Sorry about your ordeal.
L.

I am not a very good advocate of the Mirena IUD these days. About two weeks ago I found out that I am 30+ weeks pregnant with a little boy. I had the Mirena inserted about 4 years ago and wanted to have it checked before I entered the teaching credential program on Aug 25th. Well, you can imagine my surprise when the ultrasound tech asked me how far along I was. I told her I wasn't pregnant and she started to laugh. Then I looked at the screen and saw a head the size of a softball. I can't believe I got through 3/4 of my pregnancy without realizing it. I already have two girls ages 4 and 7. I know that this little guy will be such a blessing to our family - he has prevailed against all the odds. Definitely ask your husband to get a vasectomy or get your tubes tied if you are really, truly done. I already signed the paperwork - no more birth control for me!! I also agree that you should consider filling a malpractice suit or at least reporting him. Good luck to you.

Hi J.,
I'm so sorry about your ordeal, I hope you are feeling better and you heal up well. This did not happen to me but I knew it was a risk. I had the Mirena for 13 awful months, 3 endometritis infections and all sorts of trouble from day one...uggh. I had it removed and now we have our daughter. I think you are probably better off without a foriegn body in your uterus. Take care of yourself. ~~L.
